Arsene Wenger was delighted that his team finally managed to find the back of the net in the win over West Brom.
Wenger believes Nicklas Bendtner showed all the class needed of an Arsenal forward as he scored two goals tonight to inspire the Gunners' 3-1 Barclays Premier League win at West Brom.
Bendtner has sometimes been the target of Arsenal boos, but his contribution helped to end a run of four league games without a goal for the Gunners - and rekindle hopes of a Champions League spot.
The Danish international has been on target 11 times this season and formed a promising partnership with £15 million signing Andrey Arshavin.
Wenger said: "The two strikers did well. Bendtner is improving from month to month, and Arshavin from game to game as well. He has been unlucky in his finishing. But you can see that the class is there.
"It's different when you play for Arsenal Football Club. You are being compared to the players who played five, six or ten years ago.
"But you have to accept that a guy of 19 or 20 years old [Bendtner] will be better every three, six months. He has shown tonight he has the talent to be an Arsenal player.
"That is the right way to mature. I liked his presence. I liked his determined attitude and the way he took people on. That shows he has improved."
Arsenal are now unbeaten in 14 league games, and Wenger was left to rue how a series of draws have ended their hopes of winning the title.
He said: "It's a strange situation. We created as many chances tonight as we have done in previous games.
"We are on a long unbeaten run since the beginning of November - and I still believe that in the few draws we had, if we'd taken those chances, we would still be in the title race.
"But now we want to focus on reducing the gap to Aston Villa and other teams and try to win our games."
West Brom manager Tony Mowbray was left to bemoan some more dreadful defending by his side, who have conceded 17 goals in the last six league games.
He said: "We won't win any matches if we defend like we did in the first half.
"The first goal comes from a corner we don't defend; the second from a free-kick into the box and a free header; the third from a straight run by their centre-forward from a ball over the top.
"The defending has got to improve. I take responsibility for the fact I bought all the players in, but the defenders are not stepping up to the job that is required.
"I am frustrated. We work on it - we don't just wash things away. I have changed the individuals, but the goals are still going in against us.
"All we can do is pick ourselves up and try again, try and bounce back from adversity."
