Fergie: Ronaldo stay is sure thing

Sir Alex Ferguson says he would place a "big bet" on the Champions League final not being Cristiano Ronaldo's last game for Manchester United.

The Red Devils take on Chelsea in Moscow on Wednesday night, looking to add the European Cup to the Premier League title they won earlier this month.

Ronaldo has been United's star performer this season and there are reports that Real Madrid remain interested in the Portuguese forward.

But Ferguson was adamant the player is going nowhere, and responded to a Spanish journalist's question by saying: "You get some idiots in this place don't you? If you want to have a bet on it, I'll put a big bet on with you."

Ferguson is determined to secure the European Cup after admitting Manchester United's continental record is a "weakness" for a club of their size.

The Red Devils have won the competition only twice before, a record dwarfed by Real Madrid's nine European Cups and Liverpool's five.

Ferguson said: "There is a weakness in the European trophies we've won and I hope we can go some way to making that better tomorrow night.

"We have had 10 days' good preparation, it has helped staff more than the players, it's a long season and we all feel the strains and stresses of it.

"It's given the players the opportunity to do some serious work on the training field and we're in our best shape for this game against Chelsea."

United defenders Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown insist the domestic meetings between the sides - one home win apiece - will have no bearing on the match on Wednesday.

Ferdinand said: "Form goes out the window, on the day it's who performs.

Brown added: "In the league we both won once, but this is a cup final. We know the players, it's a one-off match and we will definitely be prepared to beat them."

Ferguson, who felt there would be no problems with the relaid pitch, admitted selecting his side - particularly his substitutes - was proving no easy task.

He added: "I will tell the players tomorrow afternoon. It is not easy, but I have got a team in mind. I think it is the right team."

Ferguson believes he will have a stronger bench available than he did for last season's FA Cup final, when his side were beaten by Chelsea at Wembley.

"I think that is the main difference from the FA Cup final last year," he said. "I think with seven substitutes you hope at least three will have an impact.

"With three out of the seven, the ones you make have to have an impact. I have to give a lot of consideration to the players on the bench.

"I wish it was 11 substitutes, it would make my job easier."

Ferguson confirmed defender Nemanja Vidic was fit and would play in the match.

On his own feelings ahead of the match, Ferguson added: "It is not as though it is my first final, it is my fourth European final.

"The one person who should not be nervous is myself. I have got to use my experience and composure to hopefully help everyone else."

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL
Venue: Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow Date: Weds, 21 May Kick-off: 1945 BST

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole suffered an injury scare in training at the Luzhniki Stadium ahead of Wednesday's Champions League final.

The England left-back hurt his ankle after a strong challenge from Claude Makelele and went off for treatment.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has a selection dilemma ahead of the showdown in Moscow.

With all his key men fit, he must discard six of his 24-man squad before then deciding on his starting line-up.

Cole stayed down for a long time after the heavy tackle from the France midfielder.

He was then helped off the field by Chelsea staff, although did then begin running again to try and overcome the problem.

A statement on the club website said: "He was treated, it was tested, then strapped - but after consultation between Grant and the physios, Cole resumed and took full part in the final training game."

Ricardo Carvalho, John Terry and Didier Drogba are all expected to be fit.

Captain Terry dislocated his elbow on the final day of the Premier League season, but seems to have made a stunning recovery to play.

Fellow defender Carvalho, who won the trophy with Porto in 2004, has overcome a back injury and influential striker Drogba looks to have shaken off a knee problem.

Michael Essien is likely to remain at right-back ahead of Paolo Ferreira or Juliano Belletti, while Makelele is set to take the holding role in midfield ahead of John Mikel Obi, with Joe Cole on the right flank.

But boss Avram Grant must decide whether to pick Florent Malouda or Salomon Kalou on the left flank.

"I know 80% of my team," said Grant. "But I like to keep watching them in training to see how they are doing."

For United, centre-back Nemanja Vidic will play after recovering from a head injury while Paul Scholes, who missed the 1999 final through suspension, has been promised a place in the starting line-up in the Luzhniki Stadium.

Ryan Giggs, who did play in 1999, will overtake Sir Bobby Charlton's club record of 758 appearances if he features in Moscow, although he may start on the bench.

Ferguson said Ji-Sung Park, who has started most of their biggest games of late, had a "great chance" of being in the final line-up.

Portuguese winger Nani, suspended for the Premier League finale against Wigan, returns to the United squad.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man Utd squad: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Heaton; Brown, Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic, Neville, O'Shea, Pique, Silvestre, Anderson, Fletcher, Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Nani, Park, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Saha, Welbeck.

Chelsea squad: Cech, Hilario, Cudicini, Belletti, Ferreira, Alex, Ben-Haim, Terry, Carvalho, A Cole, Bridge, Makelele, Essien, Lampard, Ballack, Kalou, Wright-Phillips, J Cole, Malouda, Drogba, Shevchenko, Anelka, Mikel.

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United are desperate to improve their relatively modest European record in Wednesday's Champions League final.

Ferguson's sides have dominated on a domestic level, but his sole Champions League triumph came back in 1999 as part of the club's famous treble.

"There is a weakness in the European trophies we've won and I hope we can make that better," said Ferguson.

"We have had 10 days' good preparation, we're in our best shape for this game."

United's side of George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law famously became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 when they beat Benfica.

But the club has underachieved on the European stage, with their tally lagging well behind that of Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants leading the way with nine trophies.

Meanwhile, Ferguson said the gap between the end of the Premier League season and Wednesday's final meant his side were fresh for the biggest match of the season.

"It's given the players the opportunity to do some serious work on the training field," he added.

Chelsea enjoyed the upper hand in last year's FA Cup final between the two sides, while they also ground out a 2-1 win in the Premier League last month to force the title race to the wire.

But Ferguson dismissed any suggestion that his players would struggle to cope with the pressure of the big occasion.

"We are fresher than we were for last year's (FA Cup) final," he said.

"I trust my players and they've got the nerve and the courage and that will make a difference."

United defender Rio Ferdinand said recent results between two sides will have little impact in the Luzhniki Stadium.

"Form goes out the window, on the day it's who performs," he said.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster when eight of United's legendary Busby Babes side died in a plane crash.

The tragic incident is embedded deep in the club's history, and Ferdinand said the current generation of United players would use it as a motivating factor.

"For me, it works as an inspiration more than pressure," said Ferdinand.

"I think the pressure comes from within - your own personal pride and wanting to do well.

"The minute you walk through the door at Old Trafford, the tradition and history of the club works as an inspiration.

"You want to be regarded as part of the furniture, part of the tradition of the club, and to do that you have to win trophies."

There have been concerns over the state of the pitch in Moscow but Ferguson said his players were used to dealing with difficult playing surfaces.

"I have no concerns about the pitch," said Ferguson.

"Uefa have done their best to prepare it. You have to remind yourself that Old Trafford in February is not the best in the league and is probably the worst."
