Slomka sacked by Schalke after Bremen humiliation
Schalke 04 sacked coach Mirko Slomka yesterday after the Bundesliga club were eliminated from the Champions League by Barcelona and humiliated by league rivals Werder Bremen 5-1.
Schalke, who slipped from second to third in the league on Saturday after the drubbing in Bremen, announced the decision to part company with Slomka, who was promoted from assistant manager in January 2006, on their website.
Slomka, 40, has suffered speculation he would be replaced for months even though he had one of the most successful records in the league. Last season he guided Schalke to second place and in 2006 he led them to the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup.
General manager Andreas Mueller said in a statement the club had planned to replace Slomka at the end of the season, "but after the Werder Bremen match I decided to pull the plug now."
Mueller said the decision was made with the aim of finishing at least third. "We've got into a situation now that could have a very negative impact on the team and endanger our goal of qualifying for the Champions League. That's why we moved quickly now."
In France, Marseilles boosted their Champions League hopes with a 2-1 win at Metz on Saturday. Goals from Djibril Cisse and Samir Nasri moved Marseilles up to third place in Ligue 1 at the expense of Nancy, defeated 2-1 at Lille. Marseilles and Nancy are both on 55 points from 33 games, but the southerners lead their rivals on goal difference.
The top two in Ligue 1 qualify for the Champions League with the third-placed team entering the qualifying round.
Despite an early goal by Cedric Barbosa, Metz were relegated to Ligue 2 with 18 points, 17 points from safety with five games left. Leaders Lyon were held to a 1-1 home draw by Stade Rennes on Saturday. |

Striker asks for Bayern exit
Tuesday Apr 15 2008 07:30
Unsettled forward Jan Schlaudraff has handed in a transfer request at Bayern Munich.
Schlaudraff, 24, has made just a handful of appearances since joining the current Bundesliga leaders from Alemannia Aachen last summer.
The striker is behind the likes of Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski in the pecking order and is keen to leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season.
"Jan has asked us for a transfer and we have agreed to his request," revealed Bayern sporting director Uli Hoeness.
Schlaudraff, who has been linked with Hamburg, added: "I asked about my prospects at the club. It was said there weren't any so therefore I said that I want to go.
"There are a number of enquiries and one concrete offer from the Bundesliga.
"I will see what pans out, but it would be good if the whole thing could be sorted out quickly." |

Bremen keep pressure on Bayern in Germany
Tue 15 Apr, 10:05 PM
BERLIN (AFP) - Second-placed Werder Bremen won 2-1 at Hansa Rostock on Tuesday night to reduce their deficit to seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich in the German league.
Bayern travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday with the chance of restoring the 10-point advantage.
Three days after thrashing third-placed Schalke 04, Werder came up against a hardworking Rostock who are battling to avoid relegation.
Germany international Torsten Frings opened the scoring with a 57th minute shot for his first league goal since November 2006 but Rostock drew level in the 76th minute through Sebastian Haehnge.
Bremen got the winner with eight minutes to go however. A penalty kick was saved by the Rostock keeper but the ball fell nicely to Ivan Klasnic who made no mistake with the rebound.
Werder have really come back into form following a poor March with three victories in a row - two of them away from home - however unless Bayern severely slip up the best they can realistically hope for is second spot.
"The main thing was to get the three points, not necessarily to play beautiful football," said Frings, who is nearly back to his best level after a season curtailed by a recurring right knee injury.
However Bremen are only two points ahead of third-placed Schalke who showed their fighting spirit with a 5-1 win over lowly Energie Cottbus, including four goals from Kevin Kuranyi.
It was hard to say if the Ruhr club had benefited from the axing of coach Mirko Slomka, and the fielding of two interim coaches, or whether it was merely the poor showing of Cottbus.
Kuranyi, who had been out of form since the beginning of the year and had not been on good terms with Slomka, has certainly regained his form in front of goal.
Kuranyi said afterwards: "It was great to score four goals but I'm also happy with the football we played today. We were in fighting mood and gelled well as a team. It was important to find our feet again after the Bremen defeat."
And Mike Buskens, one of Schalke's two stand-in coaches, said: "We tried to speak with the players a lot since our arrival by telling them 'You have had a lot of pressure these last few days, but football is above all about enjoying yourself.'"
Fourth-placed Hamburg, 12 points behind Bayern, could only get one point following their goalless draw at Hertha Berlin but would have won if Ivica Olic had not messed up his penalty kick.
The northern point club could even be ousted from fourth spot by Bayer Leverkusen should they win at Arminia Bielefeld on Wednesday. |

Kuranyi Supplies Schalke PowerTue 15 Apr, 10:09 PM
Kevin Kuranyi bagged four goals as Schalke stormed to a 5-0 victory at home to Energie Cottbus in the first game under their new coaching duo.
After the sacking of Mirko Slomka, Mike Buskens and Youri Muldertook over the reigns and saw their Schalke side come up with theperfect answer to the week's turmoil.
Cottbus' Vragel da Silva scored an own goal in the 31st minute andKuranyi followed with goals in the 37th, 41st, 59th and 80th forSchalke, who remain two points behind second-placed Werder Bremen.
Bremen picked up their third straight victory with a 2-1 win at Hansa Rostock to gain ground on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
Ivan Klasnic snatched the winner eight minutes from time after Stefan Wachter had kept out Naldo's penalty.
Torsten Frings had opened the scoring for the visitors in the 57thminute only for substitute Sebastian Hahnge to bring Rostock level.
The victory moves Thomas Schaaf's side to within seven points of Bayern, who play at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
Hertha Berlin and Hamburg failed to illuminate the Olympic Stadium in a goalless draw which extends both sides' runs of poor form.
Berlin have not won for seven games now and rarely looked like doing so, although they did have a Lukasz Piszczek goal harshly disallowed for offside after an hour.
Hamburg's last three-point haul came five matches ago with a 1-0 winover Borussia Dortmund and they did have a golden opportunity to winthis one when Ivica Olic missed a penalty 15 minutes from time.
Elsewhere, Bochum edged past an in-form Wolfsburg side thanks to Stanislav Sestak's late goal in a 1-0 away win. |
