Vettel title loss would be ‘strange’ – Brawn

It would be “very strange” if Sebastian Vettel did not go on to win his second drivers’ title in 2011 claims Mercedes GP team boss Ross Brawn, who told the SID news agency he has no qualms nominating Red Bull’s runaway championship leader as the unassailable favourite for 2011 spoils.
“I think it would be very strange if Sebastian did not win the championship,” Brawn commented. “He has a great car, he is driving fantastically — it’s hard to imagine why we wouldn’t do it.”
Brawn does not think the blown exhaust clampdown, to take its real effect this weekend at Silverstone, will overly affect the pecking order.
“I don’t think so. I think most of the top teams are going to lose something, but I don’t think it will be dramatic, and I don’t think it will change the order.
“All of the top teams will have been working hard to recover the lost performance,” added Brawn.
He admitted Mercedes’ 2011 car is simply “not fast enough” and thinks some improvements will have to wait until the W02′s successor.
“There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with our car. It’s not a bad car — it’s the fourth fastest in formula one, but that’s not our goal,” said the Briton.
“We need to improve in every area; aero, suspension, the driveability of the engine. We are one second behind the best.”
Brawn denied, however, that the Brackley based squad’s German driver lineup is also off the pace, including the struggling seven time world champion Michael Schumacher.
“Both of our drivers are fantastic, we have an outstanding driver lineup and as soon as we have a competitive car, it will be fascinating to see both of them fighting for victory,” he said.

Webber unhappy with team order
Mark Webber said he was not happy with the team asking him to hold position when closing up behind Sebastian Vettel towards the end of the British Grand Prix.
Webber was in third place and having cleared Lewis Hamilton was reducing the gap to Vettel lap by lap as his team-mate struggled with a KERS problem. With eventual race-winner Fernando Alonso over 15 seconds ahead in the lead and Hamilton struggling far behind Christian Horner radioed to Webber to "maintain the gap" in order to reduce the risk of any collision. However, when asked if he was fine with the team order, Webber said he ignored the message.
"I'm not fine with it, no," Webber said. "So that's the answer to that. If Fernando had retired on the last lap then we would have been fighting for victory. I was fighting to the end; of course I ignored the team because I wanted another place. Seb was doing his best, I was doing my best, for sure I don't want to crash with anyone. That was it."
Despite his apparent annoyance with the message, Webber did say that he didn't feel like he was being treated as a number two driver.
"Not really. I just wanted to race to the end. With four or five laps to go they started to chat to me about holding my position. Of course they want the points but I also wanted to get some points as well."
Vettel himself did not seem too bothered by the incident, saying that he didn't want to risk losing points but that he felt the pair had to race.
"I tried to stay ahead obviously, we're racing each other. I think there is nothing wrong with that from a team point of view. If you have two cars quite isolated in second and third, the first guy is away and the fourth guy is pretty far away as well. From a team point of view there is no point in racing and trying to do something stupid because the points for the team are the same.
"The difference between second and third is not massive but naturally we try to race. What can I say? I was trying to defend my position which I did - I was struggling, Mark was faster. Then there was the chequered flag." |

Red Bull driver Mark Webber has spoken of his frustration after being ordered not to overtake team-mate Sebastian Vettel in the closing stages of the British Grand Prix.
Webber was in a battle for second with championship leader Vettel and manoeuvred to pass the German.
But the Australian was told "Mark, maintain the gap" on the team radio.
"I'm not fine with it, no," Webber said after the race, and added that he did not pay attention to the orders.
"[If] Fernando [Alonso] retires on the last lap, we're battling for victory.
Horner decided that 33 points in the bank for the team was better than the potential of, as Horner put it, "two cars in the fence", and he tried to call Webber off

"Of course I ignored the team and I was battling to the end. I was trying to do my best with the amount of conversation on the radio.
"I wasn't doing much talking back, but I got a lot of messages coming my way, but I was trying to the end."
When asked if he felt like a number two driver, Webber replied: "Not really. I just want to race to the end.
"Four or five laps to go I started to get messages. Of course they want the points, but I also need to try to get some points as well."
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said that although he understood the Australian's frustration, he had to put the team first.
"We did not want to see our drivers in the fence at some time in the last two laps, which is how it would have ended up," he said.
"Mark is not out of the championship race but we could not afford to risk losing points. Mark should be fine with that, he is a team player. Second and third is a very strong result."
Horner insisted Webber was "free to race for wins" in the future.
"He qualified on pole position here, he had the opportunity to win this race," he commented.
"It didn't pan out for him today. We gave him every chance to do so, but from a team perspective, I made it quite clear in the drivers' briefing this morning to both drivers in front of the engineers that the biggest thing was about getting a team result in front of all of the staff who put in so much effort into both those cars, for the constructors' championship.
"We've come away with Sebastian having extended his lead in the drivers' championship, Mark moving into second and the team extending its lead in the constructors' championship."
When asked about how he would respond to the 34-year-old ignoring the team orders, Horner stated: "It's something he and I will talk about in private."
Horner added that he hopes this incident will have no effect on the completion of Webber's proposed one-year contract extension.
Vettel said that he could not fully understand why there was any controversy about what had happened.
"I was trying to defend my position, Mark was faster, he tried to pass me, I could stay ahead," he said.
"If I wouldn't be racing, I would wave him past. The last thing you want is to do something bad for the team.
"If it was the other way around, of course I would like to pass him but I don't see what is the big problem. To me at this stage [all the controversy] is quite funny."
Damon Hill, the president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, told BBC's Formula 1 forum: "If he was asked not to overtake, that's a bit serious for a racing driver." |
