Berbizier抯 men struggle to overcome tenacious Romanians

ITALY coach Pierre Berbizier said he was relieved that his side had dug deep into their reserves to fight off a determined Romanian comeback and record their first win of the World Cup on Wednesday.

Still looking to be suffering the after-effects of Saturday抯 76-14 destruction at the hands of the All Blacks, Italy produced a stuttering performance against a physical Romania side to win through 24-18 at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

Italy scored through Santiago Dellape and a penalty try, with a further 14 points coming from the boots of David Bortolussi and Ramiro Pez.

The spirited Romanian side, in their opening World Cup game, responded with two tries from flanker Alexandru Manta and hooker Marius Tincu.

Touchdown: Romania抯 Catalin Fercu fails to stop Italy抯 Santiago Dellape from scoring a try during their Group C match in Marseille on Wednesday. Italy won 24-18

But full-back Iulian Dumitras, whose longe-range punting was nothing less than spectacular, missed four of his five kicks, although Ionut Dimofte scored two late penalties.

揑 think it was important to win the match tonight,

Favourites Australia to show no mercy against Wales

CARDIFF: Australia have vowed not to show any mercy against their struggling Welsh opponents when the two teams lock horns at the Millennium Stadium today in a match that will almost certainly decide the winner of Group B.

The Wallabies are overwhelming favourites to win after opening their World Cup campaign with a 91-3 thrashing of Japan while Wales struggled to beat Canada 42-17.

Both sides are expected to qualify for the quarter-finals regardless of who wins today but are equally determined to lay down a marker for the rest of the tournament.

揌istory shows that no team has ever lost a game and gone on to win the World Cup,

Holders England face early exit after humiliating loss

PARIS: Reigning champions England were left contemplating the prospect of failing to reach the knockout stages of this year's World Cup after a record-breaking 36-0 defeat against South Africa here at the Stade de France.

England's worst World Cup loss left them having to beat Samoa in Nantes next weekend to have any realistic chance of qualifying from Group A for the last eight and so avoid becoming the first Webb Ellis trophy-holders to be denied a quarter-final spot.

And even if they do get through, it is hard to see how England would beat likely opponents Australia on this form.

England, for all the talk of how they would raise their game following a mediocre 28-10 opening win against minnows the United States, were brushed aside by the Springboks and at half-time were a beaten side at 20-0 behind.

South Africa, quicker to the break-down despite missing suspended back-row Schalk Burger and demonstrating a confidence in open play England could only dream of, seized the initiative with first-half tries from flanker Juan Smith and wing JP Pietersen, who later crossed again.

Full-back Percy Montgomery kicked 18 points in all with Francois Steyn landing a penalty as South Africa enjoyed a fourth straight win over England.

All Blacks rack up century against Portugal

LYON: New Zealand became the sixth side in World Cup history to score more than 100 points when they racked up a predictably emphatic 108-13 win over a courageous Portugal side in their Group C match in Lyon yesterday.

The All Blacks scored 16 tries as they overpowered a largely amateur Portuguese side, with winger Joe Rokocoko and centres Aaron Mauger and Conrad Smith helping themselves to two apiece.

Flyhalf Nick Evans contributed 28 points with the boot as well as a try of his own as New Zealand garnered the fourth highest World Cup total.

Despite the scoreline it was a spirited performance from Portugal who managed to restrict their opponents to 12-3 midway through the first half and were given the biggest cheer of the day when replacement prop Rui Cordeiro crossed the line at the start of the second half.

Unlike the All Blacks' first opponents Italy, Portugal stood up to the haka and they managed to hold out a little longer than the Azzurri who conceded a try after 64 seconds in their 76-14 defeat.

But it did not take long for New Zealand to open their account and Rokocoko was first to cross the line when he sliced through the Portuguese defence after a ruck on four minutes.

Portugal produced some brave tackling in midfield to keep Graham Henry's side at bay but there was nothing they could do to stop Rokocoko from steaming in for another try nine minutes later after a quickly taken lineout.

They responded well, though, got on to the New Zealand line when flyhalf Goncalo Malheiro intercepted a pass on the wing and kicked on into the 22 but were pulled up for not straight in the lineout.

Malheiro had his moment of glory soon after, dropping a goal from 35 metres out after his forwards held off the All Black pack at a ruck to leave his side 12-3 down after 22 minutes.

In their anxiety to see off their opponents, the All Blacks made an uncharacteristic number of handling errors in the early part of the game, but quick-fire tries from winger Isaia Toeava, second row Ali Williams and Mauger steadied the ship as they stretched their lead to 33-3.

Skipper Jerry Collins scored his third try of the World Cup when he stormed in under the posts and fellow back rower Chris Masoe and hooker Andrew Hore added two as the All Blacks racked up the half-century by the break.

Stop being macho, Afeaki warns Tongans

MONTPELLIER: Former captain Inoke Afeaki has warned his Tongan teammates to cut out the Pacific Island macho culture and preserve their bodies for the rest of the Rugby World Cup.

Afeaki, one of 12 European-based players in the Tongan squad who were 25-15 opening winners over the United States, returns to action here today for the bone-rattling Group A match with Samoa which could act as a springboard to the quarter-finals for the victors.

The 1.97m lock is one of the islands' more articulate rugby spokesmen and has urged his Sea Eagles teammates to put aside the urge to prove their manhood as self-preservation in the tournament.

揅ontact in rugby in the islands is regarded as something you expect to see, so guys, as a show of macho, will tend to run straight at the defender,
