LOVE RAT TAKES $150,000 By Tay Shi'an







HE was the man of her dreams. The man she would spend the rest of her life with. Till death do us part.

Or so she thought.

So she invested heavily in their nearly four-year relationship.


He is 34, and ran a food and computer parts business. She is 32, and in sales.

Ms Soh G L lent him $150,000 to tide over his ailing business - most of it borrowed from her parents, relatives and friends.

She had an abortion three years ago, as she felt they could not afford a baby at the time. The couple even applied for an HDB flat together last year. But just months after getting the flat, Ms Soh discovered the awful truth - her boyfriend, Mr Lam F Y, was already married.

He has a Myanmar national wife and three children aged 8, 5 and 2. (We are not giving his full name to avoid identifying innocent kin, like his wife and children.)

'It was like a thunderstorm in my heart,' said Ms Soh.

Broken-hearted and disillusioned, she sued Mr Lam to get back the $150,000. She won the case. But Mr Lam did not repay her - despite the court order. So she filed a creditor's bankruptcy petition against him in August, and Mr Lam was made a bankrupt last month. 'What he owes me, I owe my friends and parents, or else I'll have to slog for the rest of my life,' said Ms Soh bitterly. 'But I haven't got a cent from him... I think he's overseas.'

Ms Soh is also left in a bind because of the HDB flat. She wants to buy the flat and replace Mr Lam's name with one of her parent's, but she has been unable to get his signature for consent.

'I just want to take back my money. I want him to get out of my life,' she said.

MET ON INTERNET

The two had met on the Internet in 1999.

'I thought he was quite genuine. My parents doted on him,' said Ms Soh.

About 1 1/2 years into the relationship, he moved into her four-room Ang Mo Kio flat, where she lives with her parents and three siblings.

During their nearly four-year courtship, she was never introduced to his family.

'He said his mother had emigrated and his relationship with his siblings was not good,' she said.

She visited his home only once, when he did not return for a week. She found his address on his IC, which he had left with her. In the flat, she saw Mr Lam's clothes, two women, and some children running around.

'The woman who answered said he was working,' said Ms Soh.

Looking back, she now realises she had met Mr Lam's mother, wife and children.

'But at that time, (Mr Lam) scolded me. He said he had rented the place out, and that the lady had lodged a report against him, saying his girlfriend harassed her.

'I never went back again,' said Ms Soh. 'He always had valid reasons, so I had no suspicions.'

But over the years, their relationship became stormy. They started quarrelling over money.

'Because his business was failing, he took a lot of money from me. I told him it couldn't last very long, and he should buck up and do something.'

Ms Soh alleged that during two of the more violent arguments, he beat her.

'The back of my head had blood clots, the inside of my mouth was cut up by teeth and my face was swollen. I couldn't even lie down to sleep,' she claimed.

She was unable to show us any scars, saying they had already healed.

'But I didn't report him to the police. He managed to convince me that he was sorry, so I forgave him.'

But the couple's relationship could not withstand a second major fight in June last year, during which Ms Soh alleged that Mr Lam took out a penknife and threatened her.

'After that, he moved out. He just drove off,' she said. 'He didn't pack, everything was left hanging. We still had the flat.'

Despite everything, the couple still met occasionally to discuss the flat, and she considered getting back together with him.

TELLTALE RECEIPT

'It has been so long. Even though he did a lot of bad things, there were also good things, like he would take my parents to the hospital for their medical check-up,' she said.

But while going through the things he left at her house, Ms Soh came across a receipt from KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

She also saw a piece of paper which indicated that he had been working out his taxes. It had a claim for wife relief.

'I thought, how can that be?,' she said.

Her suspicions aroused, she tried to call Mr Lam to ask what was going on, but he hung up on her. That was when Ms Soh went to his house again with a woman friend.

The woman who answered the door identified herself as Mrs Lam. Shocked and hurt, Ms Soh told Mrs Lam about her relationship with Mr Lam.

She then sued Mr Lam to recover the $150,000. She has spent about $10,000 so far on legal fees. She also wrote in to The New Paper on Sunday to expose him.

Her story is a twist to a recent case where four women were cheated by a man who courted them through a marriage agency.

The man, Jackson Leow Sin Hwee, 31, conned them of more than $30,000 in all between August and September last year.

He was sentenced to 12 years' corrective training. (Corrective training is a prison term that has to be served in full.)

In Ms Soh's case, not only is this the second time she has been lied to by a man, she decided to act - by making him a bankrupt and publicising what he did.

'I just want people to know there is such a jerk in Singapore,' said Ms Soh.

She felt sorry, too, for his wife and three children. 'They are innocent parties. The wife told me that as long as he brings back money for their children's education and feeds them, it's okay. They are so pitiful. This man deserves punishment.'

SHE NEEDS HIS CONSENT TO KEEP SENGKANG FLAT

MS Soh is in a predicament over the Sengkang HDB flat that she and Mr Lam had applied for last year under the Fiance/Fiancee Scheme. It was a walk-in selection.

She still wants to buy the flat.

'I queued for it and paid the $2,000 deposit, and my parents like the flat,' she said.

'Also, my sister is going to move to Sengkang, so this flat is good for us.'

But her application is considered invalid because it contains incorrect information. In it, both Ms Soh and Mr Lam are listed as singles.

Said an HDB spokesman: 'Subsequently, Ms Soh informed us that her co-applicant cheated her and is actually married to a foreign national. This being the case, their application became invalid and had to be cancelled.'

The matter was further complicated because Mr Lam filed a police report against Ms Soh, alleging that he did not apply for the flat with her and that she is a cheat.

But after investigating, the police decided to drop the case.

After the police case was settled, the HDB allowed Ms Soh to substitute her co-applicant with her parents, provided that she gets a consent letter from Mr Lam stating that he agrees to withdraw from the application.

'Although a change of family nucleus is not allowed after an application is submitted, we agreed to consider her request in view of the circumstances of the case,' said HDB.

But Ms Soh said she was unable to produce the letter. According to Mr Lam's wife, he has been overseas since September.

The HDB spokesman also said that they are considering if they will refund the $2,000 booking fee to Ms Soh.

'At the moment we are liaising with Ms Soh on the matter,' he said.

Kedah Football Association vice-president Datuk Chong Itt Chew said the contract with the 23-year-old from Penang would be terminated as his behaviour had tarnished the name of the State team.

"I was shocked when I found out our player had done such a terrible thing."

Chong said Hasmawi, who uses the number 23 jersey, formerly played for Penang before signing a two-year contract with Kedah early this year. He was a first choice player for the Malaysia Cup Final between Kedah and Perlis on Dec 4, which saw Perlis winning the cup. Hasmawi was again in the news for abandoning Norlida Abdul Rahman, 23, via a text message sent to her handphone.

The SMS in Bahasa Malaysia was received 19 hours before the akad nikah ceremony at her family home in Felda Ulu Dengar, Kahang Timur last Friday.
