Rafael Nadal has slammed the Grand Slam Board (GSB) for failing to take action over Fabio Fognini’s actions sooner after it took several days to sanction the Italian.

The world No. 26 made obscene remarks to umpire Louise Engzelle, who reported Fognini after he called her, in Italian, ‘troia’ and ‘bocchinara’ – which translate as ‘whore’ and ‘cocksucker’.
After being handed a hefty 18,500 fine for his actions on court, Fognini was then kicked out of the tournament by the GSB.
But in the time between him committing the offence and him being banned, the Italian had played two doubles matches along with partner Simone Bolelli.
Having advanced to the third round, the pair were due to play American duo Nicholas Monroe and the Australian JohnPatrick Smith but they were removed after Fognini was suspended.

A statement read: ‘The provisional suspension is with immediate effect and, therefore, Mr Fognini has been withdrawn from his upcoming doubles match.’
While Nadal did not condone Fognini’s behaviour, he did have some sympathy with the 30-year-old for being pulled out of the event having been allowed to compete after the incident and described the situation as ‘not ideal’.
‘Of course is not a positive thing [what Fognini did],’ he said after his win over Leonardo Mayer. ‘Of course if you are not doing the right things on the court, of course you need to be in some way affected.

Pursuant to the Grand Slam Code of Conduct, Article III Q and Article IV A and B, Fabio Fognini is hereby provisionally suspended from further participation in the US Open pending a Final Determination whether a Major Offense has been committed during his first round singles match.
The provisional suspension is with immediate effect and, therefore, Mr Fognini has been withdrawn from his upcoming doubles match.
There will be no further public comment concerning this matter until the Major Offense process is complete.
‘But at the same time is true that things can be made happen earlier because I believe that he played two matches after that match, two doubles matches.
‘If they want to suspend him, will be much better to do it immediately, not three days later or four days later, because then he was here playing for a few days. Now he is out already winning two matches.

‘I think is not the ideal situation. Probably something that will go immediately to check it, and if he deserve a suspension, he take it, and if he don’t deserve, don’t take it.’
When it was suggested the delays could be due to translating it from Italian to English, Nadal replied: ‘It takes four days for that translation? I don’t think so. It’s easy to find.’
Fognini’s partner Bolelli took to Instagram to register his frustration at the decision.
He wrote: ‘The decision for us to end the tournament is really unfair. The beautiful victories and feelings remain.’
