Navarro's ban reduced to six months

[quote]MADRID, Spain (AP) - Valencia defender David Navarro's suspension for his part in a brawl during a Champions League game has been reduced from seven to six months.

Also, defender Carlos Marchena's four-game suspension from the Champions League has been halved by UEFA, Valencia said Wednesday.

However, Navarro and Marchena will have their punishments increased if either is involved in wrongdoing over the next two years, the club added. Navarro's ban, which will now end in September, would be extended by two months, while Marchena would be banned another two games.

"I'm satisfied. The sanction is a hard one but all that's left for me is to think about it passing as quickly as possible," Navarro said.

UEFA's decision followed an appeals hearing at its headquarters in Switzerland on Wednesday. Navarro attended the meeting, while Marchena was in communication by phone as he was due to play in Spain's European Championship qualifier against Iceland in Mallorca later Wednesday.

The brawl began as Valencia's match against Inter Milan on March 6 was drawing to a close. Inter midfielder Nicolas Burdisso attacked Marchena as the final whistle blew, sparking the melee.

Navarro, an unused substitute, ran on the field and punched Burdisso, breaking his nose.

Burdisso and teammates Maicon, Ivan Cordoba and Julio Cruz each drew suspensions of between two and six games. The match ended 0-0, sending Valencia to the quarterfinals on away goals.

Valencia and Inter Milan were each fined 250,000 Swiss francs (

Morientes to miss Chelsea match

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain (AP) - Valencia striker Fernando Morientes will miss both legs of the Champions League quarterfinals against Chelsea because of a dislocated right shoulder.

Morientes ran into a post in the 38th minute of Spain's 1-0 win over Iceland in a European Championship qualifier Wednesday.

National team doctor Genaro Borras said Morientes' shoulder will need to stay immobilized for two weeks and the player is likely to be sidelined for three to four weeks.

Valencia visits the English champions at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday, with the return game to be played in Spain six days later.

Valencia 3-2 Espanyol

VALENCIA, March 31 (Primera Liga) - Valencia edged out Espanyol in an entertaining match at the Mestalla on Saturday night to stay in the title race and end the impressive 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions of their opponents.

Los Che led 2-1 at the interval with goals from David Villa and Vicente sandwiching Albert Riera's strike for the Catalans.

Miguel Angel Angulo extended Valencia's lead in the second half but Luis Garcia's strike for the visitors from Barcelona set up a tense finale.

Valencia lost their last match at home to Racing Santander before the international break and were determined not to slip up again in front of their own fans.

Quique Sanchez Flores' side began with intent and almost got off to a perfect start when Angulo stormed through the Espanyol defence after five minutes, but goalkeeper Carlos Kameni came out quickly to deny the Spain midfielder.

The home side continued to dominate and took the lead seven minutes later.

Joaquin found space on the right flank and crossed to the far post, where Villa was waiting to fire the ball past Kameni with an acrobatic effort.

But Espanyol hit back almost immediately when Riera equalised after 14 minutes.

The young winger was put through by a great pass from Ivan De La Pena and beat Santiago Canizares with an excellent angled drive to bring the visitors level.

Despite the goal, Valencia continued to dominate and deservedly retook the lead after 26 minutes.

This time Villa turned provider to set up winger Vicente, who marked his return from injury with a goal by slotting the ball past Kameni and into the far corner to put the home side back in front.

After a brief lull in proceedings, Espanyol then missed a great chance to level the match for a second time, when captain Raul Tamudo failed to hit the target with only Canizares to beat following De La Pena's majestic through-ball after 34 minutes.

Just before half-time, Kameni then pushed away Villa's curling free-kick as Valencia threatened to double their lead.

They did exactly that on 59 minutes, when Villa led a quick counter-attack down the right flank and crossed for the unmarked Angulo to side-foot past Kameni.

Valencia then looked like they might run away with it, but the game soon took another twist when Espanyol pulled a goal back just four minutes later.

Luis Garcia popped up at the far post to fire Riera's cross towards goal and although Canizares made a save, the ball had clearly crossed the line and Espanyol were back in it.

Valencia looked riled following Luis Garcia's strike, but should have put the game beyond Espanyol's reach on 69 minutes.

Villa found Joaquin in the area and the former Betis winger brilliantly beat Daniel Jarque, but fired straight at Kameni from the penalty spot when he really should have scored.

Espanyol coach Ernesto Valverde then brought on strikers Walter Pandiani and Coro as the Catalans threw everything at Valencia in the closing stages.

It almost paid off in the dying seconds.

Riera took up possession in midfield and advanced down the left before finding Pandiani unmarked at the far post with a deep cross, but the Uruguayan badly miscued his effort and the ball sailed harmlessly wide, much to the relief of the Valencia fans, who saw their team maintain their hopes of a third title in six seasons.
