Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux has failed his medical at Liverpool, according to football.fr. The Frenchman was understood to have arrived on Merseyside today to complete his medical before putting pen to paper, but his dream of a move to Anfield now appears to be in tatters.
Marveaux, out of contract at Rennes, hasn’t played at all since suffering a serious groin injury against Brest in November and it is understood that the injury, one of many in his career already, is the cause of concern. The winger was set to sign a contract rumoured to be worth £60,000 per week, but will now be forced to look elsewhere for his footballing future.
He has had groin problems in the past, suffering a serious injury in August 2008, but some superb performances in the 2009-10 season put him on the radar of a number of clubs around Europe. The Reds have been linked with a move for Marveaux since he was spotted at Anfield during the defeat against Wolves in December, but the long standing courtship between the two parties seems now to be over.
The player had agreed a pre-contract in March, so the club were duty bound to at least offer him a medical even if they had no intention of following up their earlier interest. We know by the the recent arrival of Andy Carroll that injured players can pass these examinations if the club doctors give the nod, but it looks as though the American owners have intervened with this particular deal and instructed the medical staff to cut Marveaux loose on the grounds of his well documented injury problems.
The news is likely to be a bigger blow to Marveaux than it is to Liverpool. He never looked like a linchpin of the Reds’ summer rebuilding, more a move to increase the strength in depth of the squad. One must wonder where Marveaux turns next, however, as he looks for someone to take a gamble on his future fitness.
Udinese defender Cristian Zapata says he he is close to agreeing a move to Liverpool, revealing that his future will be resolved after the Copa America.
The 24-year-old was in fine form for his club last season, helping propel them into a Champions League spot for the forthcoming campaign. His assured performances have earned him the attentions of both Bayern Munich and Liverpool, but the player himself appears to favour a move to Merseyside and believes a deal could be just around the corner.
When quizzed on his future by La FM, he said: “I do not know what to say, I can say that I am very close to Liverpool.
“At the end of the Copa America, we will see what happens with my future.
“I have gained experience, but the time has come for me to make the jump to a big team.”
The Columbian’s versatility will be particularly appealing to Kenny Dalglish, who is known to be seeking reinforcements at centre-back and left-back ahead of the new season.
Ki Sung-Yeung 'lined up by Liverpool' as Charlie Adam transfer stalls
Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Liverpool, as doubts about Charlie Adam's move to Anfield grow.
Reds boss Kenny Dalglish has made no secret of his desire to sign Blackpool star Adam, but there is still no deal in place.
Blackpool hope to secure a £10 million fee for the ex-Rangers midfielder, as they believe interest from Spurs, Aston Villa and Manchester United will spark a bidding war for the 25-year-old.
Liverpool are now putting a contingency plan in place and, according to talkSPORT, it is likely to involve 22-year-old Ki.
The South Korea international, who scored the first goal in Celtic's 3-0 Scottish Cup final victory over Motherwell, is thought to be an important figure in Bhoys boss Neil Lennon's plans for next season.
However, Celtic would struggle to resist a big offer from an English club and Liverpool may find it easier to land Ki than Adam.
