How about Pascal Khoo Thwee?
Burmese writer tu kiranye Asian writer jugak lah kan . I have read a biographical book by Pascal Khoo Thwee titled "From the Land of Green Ghost". It's about his life in the Padoung tribe under the Burmese Socialist Party, where he describes his life in his village with his family in a poetic way. Then, he went to the university in Mandalay to study English Literature, where he met a professor from Cambridge. Later, the big student riot occurred, where the army killed many students who were fighting for democracy with Aung San Suu Kyi. Pascal fled to the jungle to join the rebels. Being smuggled to Thailand, he was then rescued by his benefactor, the professor from Cambridge. He read English Literature in Cambridge and now lives in exile in London. I attended his book signing session in a local book store and a seminar he gave about Burma and democracy. I sympathise with him and it makes me feel grateful to live in Malaysia, where people can still choose the way they want to lead their lives. It's very interesting to read and it's always good to to know hoe life is in another ASEAN country! |

Asian Literature yang aku seriously baca, walaupun masih belum cukup mendalaminya cumalah Japanese Literature, kalau nak aku cadangkan buku, bolehlah... mulakan dengan, Haruki Murakami (ada aku adaptasikan satu cerpennya kat board nih) - The Elephant Vanishes - ini koleksi cerpennya.
Kemudian mungkin boleh cari koleksi cerpen/novel Naoya Shiga, Takeshi Kaiko, Natsume Soseki, Junichiro Tanizaki, semuanya pengarang-pengarang yang outstanding dalam sastera Jepun moden.
Bookworm: teruskan posting. Aku suka baca postings ko, banyak leh belajar...

thank you, marquez. actually, the pleasure is all mine. rasa seronok pulak discover section nie. i'm learning many new things, boleh tukar-tukar pendapat, and boleh dapat recommendations pasal buku and authors . not only that, rasa seronok lah dengar ramai Malaysians yang suka membaca.
speaking of Asian literature, I have read "The Teardrop Story Woman" by Catherine Lim (Malaysian, but now I think she's teaching in Singapore). It's romance book and the plot is Malaya...Penang exactly, masa pemerintahan British. I really like it and so, if you're seeking a spark of romance in a book, you should check this one out. it's not really mainstream literature...so, I don't think it's popular.
I also like "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy. It's a beautiful story although a bit melancholic (well, I just have the tendency to like sad, dark and melancholic stories). good use of metaphors.
Japanese writers? well...belum explore lagi that branch of literature. on the other hand, I have read "The Remains of the Days" and "The Days when We Were Orphans" by Kazuo Ishiguro. I like the first one a lot..especially the movie with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. But I don't really consider that Japanese literature because it's very very English.
oh another one..."Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" by Dai Sijie is good too, but maybe it will be more meaningful if you have read some Balzac, Flaubert and Maupassant sebab certain parts of the stories refer to those |

antara soklan yg pernah ditanya..
Prince argues that a writer should have a story to tell, and not
merely take "prose for a walk". Do you agree? Discuss the validity of this
claim with detailed reference to short stories written in this region... |

Kahlil ni lebanese-American.
>>>What is the trend of Malaysia Lit? Singapore Lit?
To bore the readers?

actually Naipaul is from Trinidad. they have a big Indian community there.
another Asian writer: Tariq Ali (from Pakistan). I have read "Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree", which tells the story about the life of a Moorish family in Andalucia fighting for survival under Queen Isabella and her husband, Ferdinand. The essence of fear, bravery, love and faithfulness is captured eloquently. |

Shirley LIm
Professor Shirley Geok-lin Lim received her Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Brandeis University in 1973. She is currently Chair Professor of English and head of the English Department at the University of Hong Kong, as well as Professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her first book of poems, Crossing The Peninsula (Heinemann Press, 1980), won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize.
Born in 1944 in Malacca, Malaysia, she endured a childhood powerfully shaped by deprivation, poverty, parental violence and abandonment. Abandoned by her mother, and growing up with five brothers in a culture that rarely recognized girls as individuals, she tried desperately to fit in. |

Based on gorgonz nye intrepretation of Chic Lit... Nope, diorang tu bukan penulis chic lit... Tak feminist langsung (chic lit ada sket2 unsur feminist.. kisah perempuan semata2)...
kebanyakan buku diorang tu cam everything is so good so baik, so pretty... (tp buku omputih pun lebih kurang so knight in shining armour).. |
