The Woes Continue for Goodbye Mr. Black as MBC Might Pass on the Drama
Posted on October 18, 2015 by ockoala
OMGosh, just what is wrong with this drama? I haven’t been agreeing or disagreeing with all the recent fan bitching about SBS passing on revenge melo Goodbye Mr. Black with Lee Jin Wook and Moon Chae Won, it’s hard with so little information to ascertain who is at fault even if it’s really one-sided. Chances are that the incompatibility came from elements stemming from both sides, so I was just happy with the news last week that MBC picked up Goodbye Mr. Black. Having a network and broadcast time slot is way more important than which particular network, agree?
Looks like I was counting my eggs too early still as one more delicate eggie just went kaput – MBC has reportedly nixed airing Goodbye Mr. Black, though the network quickly countered the first article saying it hasn’t decided yet. Two suitors passing on the project points more to the drama being inherently problematic, whether it was on concept or execution. The story was about a male lead who is a Navy deep sea diver betrayed by his best friend and comes back from the brink of death to plot his revenge, which entails a fake marriage with the plucky female lead to help pull off. Whatever the problem is, I still like the leads along with supporting male actors Kim Kang Woo and Song Jae Rim, so let’s see now if KBS or perhaps a cable network bites on Goodbye Mr. Black.

Upcoming MBC Wed-Thurs Dramas: Sweet Savage Family, Once More Happy Ending, and Goodbye Mr. Black
[size=11.616px]Posted on November 3, 2015 by ockoala
MBC is currently winning the Wed-Thurs ratings battle thanks to She Was Pretty, a position it rose to occupy after the last ratings winner SBS‘s Yongpal wrapped up but was unable to keep the audience with The Village (Achiara’s Secret). Coming up after She Was Pretty is Sweet Savage Family, a drama adaptation of the hit K-movieMarrying the Mafia. I’m mildly interested in Sweet Savage Family but more curious about what MBC has in store for that coveted Wed-Thurs time slot in 2016 after Sweet Savage Family finishes its run. Today comes news that the network has slotted two dramas that will take the network through Spring of 2016. After Sweet Savage Family will be a drama called Once More Happy Ending, the story of suddenly single adults in a once again romance. More importantly for fans eager for the Moon Chae Won–Lee Jin Wook drama Goodbye Mr. Black, MBC has scheduled that drama to follow Once More Happy Ending. Good news is that Goodbye Mr. Black is still on MBC, bad news is that it’s not airing for so many months that anything can happen. This is one drama that should arrive sooner rather than later. I think Once More Happy Ending sounds a lot more interesting on paper as long as one doesn’t know the production team behind it, at which point it looks like a preemptive hot mess. The screenwriter is Heo Sung Hye, who wrotethe very low rated KBS melodrama Full Sun (Beyond the Clouds), but is better remembered for writing the first six episodes of Dream High 2 before getting replaced by KBS trying to salvage that drama. The PD will be Kwok Sung Chan who directed Late Night Hospital and Special Investigation Team. Goodbye Mr. Black isn’t all that reassuring either, despite liking the two leads I’m still weirded out by the unknown behind the scenes issues that caused it to be dropped by SBS. The drama will be a modern day adaptation of the same name manhwa from the 1980s but originally set in Victorian era England, and adapting the script will be screenwriter Moon Hee Jung who wroteGlorious Day, Can You Hear My Heart, Missing You, Last Scandal of My Life, andStairway to Heaven.

Yoo In-young jumps aboard cast of Goodbye Mr. Black
by javabeans | December 28, 2015 | 6 Comments
Ah, we’ve got more movement on MBC’s Goodbye Mr. Black, the revengey romance thriller starring Lee Jin-wook as the betrayed hero who returns with plucky Moon Chae-won at his side to claim payback. Joining them is Yoo In-young, who has been steadily putting in solid performances in a string of supporting roles (You From Another Star, Mask, Oh My Venus).
In the drama, Yoo In-young will play the wife of a chaebol and the director of a social welfare foundation. She’s described as having once loved a man, only to have to marry his enemy; Lee Jin-wook is “her first and last love,” and Kim Kang-woo is her backstabber of a husband (considering that he was once the hero’s friend). Thus she becomes a tool for revenge after the hero disguises his identity and returns home with a fake wife (Moon Chae-won) who ends up leading him back to emotional healing.
A couple things about this casting: This setup once again pits Yoo In-young against Lee Jin-wook as a former lover and current antagonist, after the two played out that dynamic in the fusion sageuk Three Musketeers. Their chemistry was pretty sizzling—it was half due to lingering feelings and half in angry resentment, but the rage just made for brighter sparks. Second, I’m looking forward to seeing Kim Kang-woo revisiting his darker side; I enjoy him as the good-guy hero (Golden Cross), but find him downright arresting as the bad guy (Story of a Man). And while Yoo really ought to get her leading lady break any day now, I’m actually happy to see her playing second leads for the time being, in that she at least makes those characters interesting and vulnerable, and not stock bitch types. I’m sure she’ll have her day in the spotlight, though, and hopefully soon.
Also in the supporting cast: Song Jae-rim (Surplus Princess) and Daniel Henny, who returns to Korean dramas (his last being 2010’s Runaway Plan B) after spending the past few years mostly in overseas projects.
Goodbye Mr. Black will follow One More Happy Ending, to premiere in March 2016.
