Hirosue sues Josei Seven publisher for libel
Tue, June 5, 2007 (5:47am EDT)

It was discovered on Tuesday that actress Ryoko Hirosue has filed a defamation suit against Josei Seven publisher Shogakukan, seeking a published apology and approximately 23 million yen in damages.

The March 22 issue of weekly tabloid Josei Seven contained an article claiming to have spotted Hirosue riding on the back of a motorcycle, driven by actor Ken Kaneko. Kaneko is said to be Hirosue's former boyfriend, and the article suggested that she was cheating on her husband, Takahiro Okazawa. (It has also been rumored since November that Hirosue is filing for divorce.)

Hirosue's side claims that the story of her "bike date" is untrue, and that it damaged her reputation as both an actress and mother.

It appears Shogakukan is willing to go to court, as oral proceedings began on Tuesday.

'Sushi Ouji' film announced before TV series starts
Tue, June 5, 2007 (4:24pm EDT)

On Tuesday, it was announced that the TV Asahi drama series "Sushi Ouji!" will be turned into a film, even though the show will not begin airing until next month.

The action comedy series stars Koichi Domoto of KinKi Kids as a martial artist training in the art of sushi. KAT-TUN's Yuichi Nakamaru plays his partner, Taro. Both of them will reprise their roles for the movie version.

Director Yukihiko Tsutsumi is in charge of both the television series and the film. Warner Bros. will be in charge of the movie's distribution, with a target release date during Golden Week of 2008. Filming has already wrapped up for the drama, and principal photography for the movie is scheduled to begin in the next few days. The story will be set overseas (unlike the television version), but it is not clear whether it will be shot on location.

This is Domoto's first time starring alone in a movie, and it is his first film appearance since "Ienaki Ko" in 1994.

ZARD album ranks third in weekly Oricon chart
Mon, June 4, 2007 (4:31pm EDT)

Fans have been mourning over the death of ZARD vocalist Izumi Sakai last week, and their support for the singer has resulted in several of her releases skyrocketing up the music charts. In particular, her "Golden Best ~15th Anniversary~" rose to #3 on the latest weekly Oricon albums chart.

The best album (released last October) started the week outside of Oricon's complete ranking chart, which tracks the top 300 sellers. The day after Sakai's death, the album shot up to #6, and rose to #3 the next day. It hovered near the top of the charts for the rest of the week.

According to Oricon's numbers for the whole week, "Golden Best" sold about 41,000 copies, placing it solidly in third. That sales figure represents a 60-fold increase from the album's sales the previous week.

This is the first time that an album has risen from outside of the Oricon chart into the Top 3, ever since December 2002 when Oricon expanded its charts to include the top 300.

Sakai's agency also mentioned that within the same week, about 10,000 fans visited the offices in Tokyo and Osaka to pay their respects.

X Japan aims to reunite this year
Sun, June 3, 2007 (10:23pm EDT)

According to Yoshiki, rock band X JAPAN is planning to resume activity some time this year, with a concert planned before the year is up.

X JAPAN broke up in 1997. Last November, Yoshiki and vocalist TOSHI met again, and in February, the two announced that a reunion of the band was a possibility.

The plan is to re-form the group with guitarist PATA and bassist HEATH, the other two living members at the time the group disbanded. To fill in the role of hide, who unexpectedly died in 1998, Yoshiki suggested the inclusion of guest musicians.

Yoshiki hopes to begin the reunion concerts with a show in Los Angeles before the end of the year. There are also plans to release the vocal version of "WITHOUT YOU" as the band's first new single. (The song, which is dedicated to hide, originally appeared as an instrumental on Yoshiki's solo album in 1998. This past March, Yoshiki performed a version of the song with Toshi providing vocals.)

Yoshiki commented on the difficulty of the decision, mentioning that since hide's death, there have been many fans both requesting and opposing a reunion.
