Actress Okina denies reports of retirement
Mon, June 4, 2007 (3:51am EDT)

News of actress Megumi Okina's retirement spread throughout the Japanese media last week, but it appears that the reports may have jumped the gun. While her contract with Parfit did end, she recently denied that she is retiring. She also said that certain comments attributed to her were false.

One entertainment critic conjectures that her agency may be trying to release Okina, as she might be viewed as a troublemaker due to her scandals and lack of work. According to the office, however, it was Okina who chose to not renew the contract because she said she was considering retirement.

Others in the industry believe she may have received an offer from another talent agency, and her announced retirement simply provided cover for negotiations to take place. Indeed, many find it unusual that she would retire just after filming ended for the horror movie "Shutter," which will serve as Okina's Hollywood debut next spring.

Based on Okina's comments, it seems she intends to continue with her career, at least for now.

Five years after they debuted, popular Okinawan rock band Orange Range are to release their first greatest hits collection. They will put out two albums, the singles collection "Orange" and an album of fan favorites "Range", on July 27. They will also release a new single, "Ikenai Taiyo", a week earlier on July 18. A former indie band, Orange Range made the major label debut with Sony Music in 2003. It was their second single, "Shanghai Honey", that made the breakthrough, selling over 350,000 copies. Within two and a half years, they had broken the 10-million-copy barrier. To date their 15 singles have sold some 6.5 million and their four albums over 5.5 million. Even in a market that has seen big declines in CD sales, a Sony spokesman said they hope to sell a combined six million copies of the new albums.

06/04/2007 11:27 PST by KNDY

It is no secret that ZARD is a band that hardly made any public appearances.  In fact, until ZARD/Sakai Izumi抯 first concert performance in front of fans took place back in 1999 and a nationwide tour in 2004.

But a look into the performing history of ZARD, Sakai Izumi [note: ZARD is the band name but all members have quit back in the early 90抯, thus ZARD is more or less a solo act feat. Sakai Izumi] performed on television seven times.  Several of those performances were for TV Asahi抯 揗usic Station

Wed, June 6, 2007 (3:15am EDT)

Actor Kenji Sakaguchi has been appointed as a main caster for Fuji TV's exclusive broadcast of the 2007 World Judo Championships. He will be in attendance at the event, which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on September 13-16 (14-17 in Japan).

The last time the championships were held in Rio de Janeiro was in 1965. At that competition, Kenji's father Seiji Sakaguchi earned the bronze medal (he also won the national championship in the same year).

The younger Sakaguchi, who is only a second-degree black belt, will be accompanied by announcer Rio Hirai for the coverage of this year's tournament. Hirai is actually said to have been named by her parents after the Brazilian city.

Singer Gackt continues to diversify and has filmed his first role in an NHK taiga drama series. In an episode of the ongoing series "Fuurinkazan" to be aired on June 17, he makes his first appearance as the historical figure Uesugi Kenshin (1530-1578), one of the many powerful warlords of the Sengoku period. Yesterday at NHK's studio in Tokyo, he filmed scenes with star Uchino Masaaki (39), who plays the samurai Yamamoto Kansuke (1493-1561), and veteran actor Ogata Ken (69). In his 9th taiga series, Ogata plays Usami Sadamitsu (1489-1564), military strategist to Uesugi. Yamamoto is best known for his battle plan which led to victory over Uesugi at Kawanakajima. But believing his plan to have failed, he charged headlong into the enemy ranks and died before the battle was won. The title of this year's taiga is an old expression that means "as fast as the wind, as quiet as the forest, as daring as fire, and immovable as the mountain."

Nakama to portray life of Masako Natsume
Thu, June 7, 2007 (6:21pm EDT)

TBS is planning to air a drama special about the life of actress Masako Natsume, who died of leukemia in 1985 at the age of 27. The drama is based on "Futari no Masako," a book written by Natsume's mother.

Natsume is perhaps best known for her role as Tripitaka (Sanzo Hoshi) in the "Saiyuki" drama series from the late '70s.

Popular actress Yukie Nakama will play Masako, and Yoshiko Mita will play her mother. Filming began on May 27, with a target broadcast date in autumn.

The special is titled "Himawari ~Masako Natsume 27-sai no Shougai to Haha no Ai~." Himawari is the Japanese word for sunflower, which was one of Natsume's favorite flowers and was also the title of a movie she watched many times as a student - "I Girasoli," starring Sophia Loren.

Kamen Rider V3 gets a movie
Thu, June 7, 2007 (6:45pm EDT)

This fall, the "Kamen Rider" franchise will get yet another addition: "Kamen Rider The Next." The movie is being directed by Ryuta Tasaki, who helmed several other series and films in the franchise. As the title might suggest, it follows up on the 2005 release "Kamen Rider The First" (which was based on the first Kamen Rider series) and takes its inspiration from the second series, "Kamen Rider V3."

"V3" aired for 52 episodes between 1973 and 1974, and is often claimed by fans to be the best of the TV show's many incarnations. The hero, V3, will be played by Kazuki Kato, who played Drake in the "Kamen Rider Kabuto" series that ended earlier this year.

Due to horror elements, the film is expected to get a PG-12 rating.
