Haruka to leave Kigurumi
Fri, June 8, 2007 (10:13pm EDT)

Kigurumi, the child duo that spawned last year's hit song "Tarako Tarako Tarako," will be undergoing a lineup change at the end of the month. Haruka, who is the younger of the two at age 10, has decided to leave the group so that she can focus on school. She still plans to pursue a career in show business, however.

Despite Haruka's absence, Kigurumi is not breaking up. It is likely that a replacement will be named soon.

Meanwhile, on the singles chart, KAT-TUN scored their fourth consecutive #1 release with "Yorokobi no Uta."

Erika Toda cast in Japan-Taiwan collaboration
Sun, June 10, 2007 (4:48pm EDT)

Rising teen star Erika Toda is set to take her first step as an international actress. She has been cast in the movie "Tea Fight," a collaborative work between Taiwan and Japan. The story follows a young Japanese girl who travels to Taiwan in search of a legendary tea that may help her father (Teruyuki Kagawa).

The idea for the tea-themed film began two years ago. The Taiwanese director approached a Japanese production company to discuss the project, and he was introduced to Toda, who at the time was acting in the Fuji TV drama series "Engine." He was impressed by her acting skills, and has been following her progress since then.

Toda has also been gaining popularity overseas due to her appearance in the "Death Note" movies.

"Tea Fight" is scheduled to open next year throughout Asia. Distribution will be handled by Movie-Eye Entertainment. Filming is planned to take place from late October to early December, with about 80% of the filming located in Taiwan. Casting for the major Taiwanese roles is currently in progress.

'Saiyuki' promotion features fake cast
Sun, June 10, 2007 (7:23pm EDT)

A special promotional poster for Kensaku Sawada's "Saiyuki" (opening July 14) has been rolled out in theaters across Japan. The poster, however, features a fake cast and is labeled with the title "Saiyugi" (the final kanji has been replaced with one that roughly means "joke").

The fake cast features Kiyotaka Nanbara (of Uchan Nanchan) as Son Goku, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi as Sa Gojo, Hiroshi Neko as Cho Hakkai, and Kumi Koda as Tripitaka (Sanzo Hoshi). The team was gathered in secret last December.

The poster contains several other parts parodying the real film, including UFOs in the background and changes to the credits and tagline.

Yu Aoi plays lead voice in 200 million yen anime
Mon, June 11, 2007 (4:54pm EDT)

Actress Yu Aoi will play the lead voice in a special Fuji TV anime production that airs this summer. Titled "Miyori no Mori," it boasts a staggering production cost of more than 200 million yen.

"Miyori no Mori" is based on the manga of the same name by Hideji Oda. The original comic was serialized in Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine in 2003. The story is about an 11-year-old girl named Miyori (Aoi) whose parents leave her with her grandparents in the countryside. Because of her family situation, she naturally closes herself off, until she encounters the spirits in a nearby forest. The plot also incorporates a modern theme in the issue of environmental destruction.

The special, which has a running time of 130 minutes, cost approximately 210 million yen to produce. By comparison, a typical anime work costs only about 13 million yen for 30 minutes.

Actress Etsuko Ichihara will play the voice of Miyori's grandmother. Other members of the voice cast include Hiroyuki Amano and several Fuji TV announcers, such as Aya Takashima, Midori Matsuo, Toshihiro Ito, Noriko Yoshizaki, and Kyoko Sasaki. Nizo Yamamoto is in charge as director.

The anime will air on August 25 at 9:00pm.

Recently-crowned Miss Universe Mori Riyo (20) has been in the media spotlight since her return to Japan. She arrived at Narita Airport the day before yesterday and was greeted by dozens of reporters. Yesterday, 11 TV cameras and 150 reporters turned out at her press conference at a Tokyo hotel. She wore a black and white dress and a diamond and pearl tiara said to be worth $250,000. As the first Japanese to win the crown in 48 years, she is in huge demand from the media and has already filmed her first commercial endorsement, for aesthetic company TBC, and has been inundated with interviews. When asked if she had changed in her month and a half away from Japan, she said that she hadn't but everything around her in Japan had. Asked what she had missed, she replied talking with her family and miso soup! She comfortably answered questions in English from foreign media, saying that in the future she hopes to follow in her mother's footsteps and open an international dance school. She soon heads back to New York, where she took part in a recent Japan Day event, and her schedule for the coming year includes traveling to some 25 countries and taking part in charity events for causes such as AIDS.
