Japan's most famous cartoon housewife is coming to life once again. As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Fuji TV has announced a live-action version of perennial favorite "Sazae-san." The anime, based on the late Hasegawa Machiko's manga, has aired on Sunday evenings for 40 years. Though its audience rating peaked at a massive 39.4% in 1979, the show has maintained solid numbers in the high teens or low 20s ever since. Taking on one of Japan's best-loved roles is Mizuki Arisa (32), and done up with Sazae-san's distinctive hairstyle she certainly looks the part. "It's an honor for me," she said. "We've been discussing it for several years, so I think I'm ready to play the part." A Fuji producer said of the star, "She's probably Japan's No.1 comedy actress and, because she's loved by audiences of all ages, she perfect as Sazae-san." The role has been taken on by several actresses in the past - about once every decade - with the most recent being Asano Atsuko (48) in 1992-96. The first, on TBS and starring the late Eri Chiemi, was in 1965-67 and actually predates Fuji's anime version. The new drama, which will air in the autumn, will follow the anime's 3-story omnibus format, though it will run to two and a half hours.

"Asami Mitsuhiko" specials turned into fall drama series
Wed, August 5, 2009 (2:13am EDT)

Actor Ikki Sawamura (42) has never starred in a regular drama series before, but that will change this fall when he takes the lead in a TBS drama tentatively called "Meitantei Asami Mitsuhiko."

"Asami Mitsuhiko" is a series of drama specials based on a mystery-solving character created by author Yasuo Uchida. Besides TBS, NTV and Fuji TV have also produced their own specials with different cast members. TBS's version starred Takuro Tatsumi (50) in 13 episodes between 1994 and 2000, then Sawamura took over for 13 more between 2000 and 2008. But with this new series, TBS is changing it to a regular weekly format.

The title character, Mitsuhiko Asami, is a reportage writer and detective who solves difficult cases related to local legends across Japan. Each weekly episode in the new series will have the sleuth visiting a different part of the country to tackle these mysteries.

The show starts in October, airing Wednesday nights at 9:00pm. Although Sawamura is reprising his role as Asami, his supporting cast has changed. Morio Kazama (60), Yoshiko Sakuma (70), and Sachie Hara (31) have been cast in main roles.

Yukie Nakama is "Untouchable"
Tue, August 11, 2009 (1:53am EDT)

With her "Gokusen" days apparently behind her, actress Yukie Nakama (29) will tackle her next comedy role in TV Asahi's upcoming mystery series, "Untouchable." The show is an original work penned by Hiroshi Hashimoto, who has worked on "Karei Naru Ichizoku" and the "Shomuni" franchise.

"Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" still sees strong ratings
Wed, August 12, 2009 (1:41am EDT)

The fourth season of Fuji TV's drama series "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" opened on Tuesday night. Starring Yosuke Eguchi and Nanako Matsushima, the popular show averaged about 20% ratings for its first three seasons, and this one appears to be on track for another strong performance.

For Tuesday's premiere, ratings in the Kanto region achieved an average of 20.3%. This is weaker than the past season openers (24.0%, 21.5%, and 21.4%), but compared to the other drama series that have been airing this summer, it is still exceptionally high. In fact, it is the first show of this season to break the 20% mark, despite starting a month late due to Eguchi's injury in a motorcycle accident in June.

To fill in the gap caused by the show's delay, Fuji TV aired four special episodes that revolved around Matsushima's character. Ratings for those episodes ranged between 12.5% and 15.0%.
