Winger Petrov unhappy with life on Man City bench
Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov has again expressed his unhappiness at being left on the substitutes' bench by Manchester City manager Mark Hughes.
Petrov scored against West Ham United in the Premier League last week and set up Carlos Tevez's goal but he was an unused substitute in City's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa on Monday.
"I wanted to save my energy to win some jitball matches during Bulgaria training sessions," Petrov said sarcastically to explain why he did not play against Villa.
Petrov, who joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2007, ran to the bench to celebrate his goal by pointing to his shirt and number.
"No, I didn't do it for him (Hughes). I did it for my wife because she forgot my number", Petrov told reporters on Wednesday at the Vasil Levski national stadium, hinting at his limited opportunities at City.
Petrov, who suffered with a knee injury last season, was poised to join Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the transfer window but the move broke down.
"When they give me a chance I give my best," he added. "I think I've shown that I deserve a place in the starting line-up but it's up to him (Hughes).
"It's not a pleasant (situation). I'm a professional and I'm observing my obligations but it doesn't rest well with me." |

Barcelona Moves For Cesc Fabregas And Robinho Dubbed ‘CR10’
Barca's forthcoming transfer moves have earned a unique nickname...
Barcelona will make a move to try and prise Robinho away from Manchester City in January and then add Cesc Fabregas to their squad next summer, according to a report.
El Mundo Deportivo have mimicked Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo's 'CR9' nickname by giving the move for the Premier League-based pair the moniker 'CR10'.
The Catalan daily sportspaper reports that an agreement between Barca president Joan Laporta and Fabregas was sealed in the summer, and now a deal with Arsenal must be agreed.
Whether it is Laporta who seals that move will not matter, because the favourite to replace him at the helm is Sandro Rosell, and he will certainly look to re-sign the Catalan playmaker.
Robinho is also back on the club's agenda, with coach Pep Guardiola hopeful that the Brazilian can become part of his squad.
After taking the reins at Camp Nou last year, the coach told Barcelona that he wanted the skilful forward, but Madrid were unwilling to do business with their arch rivals.
Despite having stated he is happy in England, El Mundo Deportivo believe that Robinho would jump at the chance to move to Barca, and both Laporta and Rosell both are well-positioned to do a deal.

Man City boss Hughes open to Barcelona bid for Robinho
Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is willing to consider a Barcelona offer for Robinho.
Barca sports chief Txiki Begiristain confirmed their interest in the former Real Madrid winger yesterday.
And The Times says while City are under no financial pressure to sell Robinho, Hughes has concerns about the player’s ability to adapt to the physical demands of English football and to integrate into the squad.
Hughes would sell Robinho if it enabled him to bid for a player such as Franck Ribéry, the Bayern Munich winger, who does not want a new deal with the German club. Barcelona and Real are also interested in Ribéry. |

Hughes happy with City start
Manchester City boss Mark Hughes believes his expensively-assembled team has passed its first test with a good start to the Premier League season.
Hughes spent about £115million in the summer bringing in Arsenal duo Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez, Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz, Everton defender Joleon Lescott and Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry.
The club's significant financial resources, which come from Abu Dhabi owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, mean expectations have soared and before the campaign kicked off City were talked about as being contenders for Champions League qualification.
Hughes, who less than 12 months ago was fighting off questions about his future at Eastlands, knows the critics were waiting for his side to slip up.
But they have dropped just five points - three of which were in the controversial last-gasp defeat to city rivals Manchester United - in seven matches and currently sit fourth in the table with a game in hand.
"There were a lot of questions - would we be able to gel early as a team, would so-called egos in the dressing room be able to be managed - being asked of us before a ball was even kicked," said Hughes.
"From our point of view I think we have answered each and every one of them.
"We know there is a long way to go but we are pleased with the start we have because we needed a good start.
"The review we have had of the first phase (of the season) has been good. There will be more tests ahead of us but I think we are in good shape.
"When you go through the experience we went through at Old Trafford it can only help to make the group stronger as a whole.
"We know what we are capable of. We have shown glimpses in games where we have been outstanding but we've not clicked for the full 90 minutes yet."
Hughes and senior club officials have admitted they have crammed three years' spending into two transfer windows in an attempt to get City up to speed with their more established Premier League rivals.
The manager is confident the players he has brought in are of the right character to achieve the ambitions of Sheikh Mansour but has warned they cannot afford to get ahead of themselves despite an impressive start to the season.
Hughes has also told his squad to ignore the media hype, which is linking Brazil forward Robinho with a January move to Barcelona.
"Everyone realises the people we have brought to the club have made us stronger physically, technically and mentally - which was the key thing from my point of view," Hughes told mcfc.co.uk.
"As a consequence it was inevitable our results would improve but we have to make sure we are consistent through the whole season, and given the quality in the squad, I see no reason why we can't be.
"With all the media platforms out there everyone wants to discuss Manchester City so it is difficult to protect the players but we have used it to our own ends.
"We've used some of the negative stuff as a positive in terms of motivation.
"You shouldn't go too overboard about praise and negative criticism will always be there and so you shouldn't be too upset when you see it because you know it is coming.
"But the group we have are knowledgeable and experienced and they know how it works."

Man City to call United’s Con
Manchester City are set to line up a £20million bid to rival Manchester United for the services of Inter Milan’s Maicon.
The winter transfer window bid is currently in operation to snatch the full-back from under United's noses.
Man City also hope to secure the signature of another Samba star Ramires for £25m in the next offseason if their £65m attempt to acquire Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery falls through.
Sky Blues boss Mark Hughes has reportedly £100m in his transfer kitty when the winter transfer window starts, but feels his current team is enough to meet the season's expectation.
Maicon has been viewed as a target as Hughes is eyeing a Champions League berth next year.
The Brazilian international has been hailed as one of the world's best and has started all but three of Selecao Brasileira's World Cup fixtures.
His agent, Antonio Caliendo, did declare that Man United were interested, and the claim did not slip past City, who would be more than glad to fork out £90,000-a-week for the attacking full-back.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old Ramires just moved to Benfica in the offseason for £6m.

Manchester City Star Robinho: I Would Like To Play For Barcelona
Although Robinho concedes that he would dearly love to play for the Blaugrana, he is anxious to underline his professional commitment to the Citizens...
Robinho has stated that he would jump at the chance to play for Barcelona.
The Brazilian star has been touted for a move to Camp Nou, with the media in England and Spain stating that he could make a loan switch in January before making the deal permanent in the summer.
Amid denials that he has received any official offer from Barca, Robinho opted to go public with his admiration for Pep Guardiola and his all-conquering outfit.
“Of course I would like to play for Barca. Who would not? We could have so much fun," he told El Mundo Deportivo.
“It would be a pleasure to play alongside [Lionel] Messi, my compatriot Dani Alves, Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, with them all.
“They're a great team.
“I've played against them and know their quality. But right now I can only do it on the PlayStation.
"It is a pleasure to watch Barca play. They look like the best Brazilian team with the way that they use the ball. Pep Guardiola's team is truly spectacular."
Guardiola has said that he has wanted Robinho since he first took over the reins at Barcelona, and that has gone down well with the player.
"It is an honour that a coach like him speaks well of Robinho and values me as much as I have read he does. It fills my heart with pride," he continued.
"It is a question of sitting down and talking when there is a serious and concrete proposal and, as I have said before, I have not personally received that.
"Now would not be the right time to say things that could be badly interpreted here or there.
"I have a contract with City and, being the professional that I am, I am dedicated to them."
