Move to ease congestion at Woodland Checkpoint causes jam at BKE
By Ting Kheng Siong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 16 September 2008 1433 hrs
SINGAPORE: A three-month trial of a new traffic diversion scheme to ease congestion at the Woodlands Checkpoint has resulted in another jam further away.
Cars from Woodlands Centre Road going to the Woodlands Checkpoint will now not be allowed to turn right into the Checkpoint from 4pm on weekdays. They are also not allowed to do so between 10am and 10pm on weekends and public holidays.
But not all drivers are familiar with the change which kicked in on Monday at 4pm.
Apart from signboards, the police have also had to deploy some 20 officers to distribute flyers.
Although enforcing this alternative route has eased the jam at Woodlands Centre Road, motorists have found themselves stuck in another jam at the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).
Police say they will monitor the situation and if there is a need, they will make further adjustments.
Currently, motorcycles and heavy vehicles are restricted from using Woodlands Centre Road to access Woodlands Checkpoint at all times.
However, public buses and school buses are not affected.

Man pleads guilty to rigging fuel gauge in car
By Dominique Loh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 02 October 2008 1632 hrs
SINGAPORE: A 27-year-old Singaporean, Alfred Tan, has pleaded guilty for not having the minimum amount of petrol in his car while trying to enter Malaysia, and for giving false information to the officer inspecting his car's fuel gauge.
Tan was at the Woodlands checkpoint on September 18 when he was stopped by an Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer.
Tan had declared to the officer his car had a three-quarter filled tank and the fuel gauge was not rigged.
But a thorough check revealed a remote control device had been used to inflate the fuel gauge's level to show at the three-quarter mark. Upon deactivation, the fuel level fell to the one-quarter mark.
Tan was fined S$500 or in default one week's jail for the first charge of leaving Singapore with less than three-quarter tank of fuel in his car. Tan was also sentenced to two weeks in jail for giving false information to the ICA officer.

PUSAT PEMERIKSAAN WOODLANDS LAMA DIBUKA

New CIQ opens

JOHOR BARU: Malaysia's new Customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex is fully operational from today, which means all vehicles using the Causeway will have to pass through it.
Known as the Sultan Iskandar Complex, after the Johor ruler, the facility has 76 lanes for cars and 100 for motorcycles.
The existing Causeway checkpoints at the edge of Johor Baru's city centre will no longer be in operation from the early hours of today.
The RM1.3 billion (S$539 million) complex was partially operational from Dec 1 when vehicles from Singapore were diverted to the complex for a drive-through after completing their immigration and Customs procedures at the existing Causeway terminal.
And from today, all vehicles coming from Singapore must also use the Touch 'n Go cash cards to pay toll fees as they enter Malaysia. Cash will not be accepted.
Previously, drivers could choose to pay the RM2.90 fee using cash.
The smart cards, priced at RM20, are available at the old terminal, the new complex, as well as at petrol stations and Telekom Malaysia shops in Johor Baru.
The Sultan Iskandar Complex is a sprawling facility built on a 113ha site in Bukit Chagar.
Johor traffic police chief Superintendent T. Raveendran said full operations of the complex started at 12.01 am today.
All cars, buses, vans and motorcycles will use the new CIQ. But lorries will still use the nearby Tanjung Puteri checkpoint.
The existing immigration terminal at the Causeway will be demolished after the authorities are satisfied with the smooth flow of traffic at the new complex, he said.
Engineer Darryl Chong, 32, who works in Singapore and used the new complex, said that he was concerned about the narrow roads at the new complex.
'The roads are very narrow for big vehicles,' he said.
He added that he was unsure whether larger vehicles would slow down the flow of traffic while trying to negotiate the winding roads.
A new 8km road is being built to link the new complex to the southernmost tip of the North-South Highway.
The RM1.2 billion contract to build the partially elevated road was designed to reduce congestion in Johor Baru by linking it directly to the expressway.
It is unclear whether users will have to pay an additional fee above the RM2.90 toll imposed now, once the new road is ready.

Traffic jams, confusion at newly opened Malaysian checkpoint
By Cheryl Lim Mei Ling, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 16 December 2008 2131 hrs
SINGAPORE: Malaysia's new Checkpoints, Immigration and Quarantine Complex opened its doors on Tuesday.
However, despite the 76 lanes for cars and another 100 for motorcycles, traffic through the centre has not been smooth sailing.
Motorists at the checkpoint were greeted with long queues, traffic confusion and teething problems.
Even those taking public transport were not spared |
