No danger of falling out of moving LRT train
WE REFER to Mr Anthony Low Chai Siong's letter, 'Teen nearly fell out of moving LRT train' (ST, Aug 18).
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SBS Transit have conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and our investigation concluded that there was no failure in the LRT train's door system.
The slight opening of the train door is, in fact, a safety feature to allow passengers to retrieve any object that is caught between the train doors.
The door can open up to a maximum of 100mm and cannot go beyond this width because of a mechanical 'fail-safe' door lock. With a gap of this size, no passenger would be in danger of falling out of the train.
The signs to 'keep clear of doors' are precisely to prevent passengers from leaning against the doors and causing them to open to the 100mm limit. Even in the unlikely event that the train doors open beyond the allowable limit, the control system will send a priority alarm to the LRT Control Centre by radio and the traction power will be cut off immediately.
We wish to assure the public that while the North-East Line and LRT systems are unmanned, we have taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of passengers. The train doors are monitored by the control system at all times and the trains will depart the station only when the doors are closed and locked.
Safety is of top priority to us, but we also need the cooperation of the public. We ask that commuters report any incident that may pose a safety threat to our staff on duty immediately. They may either use the intercom systems provided in the trains or call the emergency numbers displayed in the train.

Seram ah aku nengok Itam, as a Malay aku nak Malaysia jadi best of the best, but nengok gini, nak ketawa pun ada.
worst case scenario, ramai penumpang , train tu jatuh bawah, abis la...berapa puluh mati or ratus..
ni kalo kata la, semua pun ok tapi ada minyak kat rel kan, jadi brake tak makan kan? dia menggelungsur je kan
tapi still kalo dia rempuh penghabisan kat Boon Lay ke, Pasir Ris ke
mesti ada buffer stop hadang benda tu dari jatuh bawah, mungkin tren kemik la depan, tapi tak jadi cam gini... |

By Noor Mohd Aziz, Channel NewsAsia |
Posted: 30 October 2006 2225 hrs
SINGAPORE: Westbound train services between Queenstown and Jurong East MRT stations were disrupted after a man was hit by a train, and died, at Clementi MRT station.
SMRT says buses were provided for about 11,700 passengers who were affected by the disruption.
This incident comes almost two weeks after a similar death at the Chinese Gardens MRT.
Police have classified the death as an unnatural one and are investigating. - CNA/so
