Hitomi Kuroki stars in medical suspense drama

WOWOW plans to air a one-shot suspense drama titled "Daisan no Miss ~Mazu Ishi wo Nageyo~," starring actress Hitomi Kuroki (49). The broadcast date has been set for December 13.
Kuroki plays Takako Sakurai, a TV producer who developed a hatred for doctors and the medical system when her father died after undergoing a surgery. As a result, she produced many shows trying to expose the dark side of the medical field.

One day, she reads an article about a surgeon (Fumiyo Kohinata) who publicly admits that a patient died from a medical mistake, offering reparations to the bereaved family. However, Takako is skeptical and begins looking into the matter, trying to determine whether the surgeon is truly sincere or is trying to cover up a murder.
    
The rest of the cast includes Mayu Tsuruta, Yoshihiko Hakamada, Sachiko Kokubu, Kimiko Ikegami, Yutaka Matsushige, and Kei Yamamoto.

Arisa Mizuki to play lone wolf teacher in new drama

TOKYO —
Actress Arisa Mizuki, 32, takes on the role of a lone wolf teacher in the new TBS drama series, “O-hitori-sama” (Party of One), which starts Friday at 10 p.m. Mizuki’s character fearlessly lives her life alone until she falls into an odd couple romance with a “herbivore man,” played by co-star Teppai Koike, 23.
Mizuki said of the role, “I think the phrase ‘o-hitori-sama’ has a lot of impact; I really like it and want to paint an image of a woman people can empathize with.”
Koike, who had recently been out with the flu, returned to filming on Oct 11 to a thunderous round of applause. “Everyone was really warm,” he said.

Sho Sakurai stars in Kobe earthquake docudrama

Arashi's Sho Sakurai (27) will play the lead role in a documentary drama special about the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. The program is tentatively titled "Hanshin-Awaji Daishinsai Kara 15 Nen: Kobe Shimbun no Nanokakan ~Hisaichi ni Ikita Kishatachi no Tatakai~" and will air on Fuji TV next year.
Also known as the "Kobe earthquake," the massive earthquake struck the southern Hyogo prefecture on January 17, 1995 and resulted in more than 6,400 casualties. The drama will focus on the reporters working for the Kobe Shimbun, who were determined to keep the newspaper running without interruption, despite the damage suffered during the earthquake.
The characters in the drama will all be based on real people, using their real names. Sakurai stars as the photo reporter Tomohiko Mitsuyama, who had joined Kobe Shimbun four years before the earthquake. The show will also have documentary segments such as interviews, including an appearance by Mitsuyama himself.
Fuji TV will broadcast the show in January 2010, which will be the 15th anniversary of the earthquake.

"Aishiteru" wins Tokyo Drama Award

The 3rd International Drama Festival, part of the currently running CoFesta (Japan International Contents Festival), kicked off on Monday. To help start things off, the winners of the 2nd Tokyo Drama Awards were announced.

The Grand Prize went to NTV's "Aishiteru ~Kaiyou~," which starred Izumi Inamori in a moving story about the relationship between a mother and her 10-year-old son, who kills a 7-year-old boy.
"Best Drama" awards were given to "ROOKIES," "Kaze no Garden," "Arifureta Kiseki," and "Soratobu Tire," as well as the tanpatsu dramas "Okaimono" and "Keiji Ichidai: Hiratsuka Hachibe no Showa Jikenshi." For local production dramas, "Okome no Namida" and "Momoyama Onigiriten" both received prizes.
 
The awards also honored individuals in the Personal Prize category. Kiichi Nakai received Best Performance by an Actor for his role in "Kaze no Garden," while Yuki Amami won Best Performance by an Actress for "BOSS." Similar awards for supporting roles were given to Kenichi Endo and Erika Toda. Two newcomer prizes went to Junpei Mizobata and Umika Kawashima.
   
"Kaze no Garden" also picked up awards for Best Screenplay (Sou Kuramoto) and Best Director (Rieko Miyamoto). Hisashi Tsugiya was named Best Producer for his work on "Aishiteru."

Special awards were given to the late actor Ken Ogata (whose last work was "Kaze no Garden"), the art staff of "Kurobe no Taiyou," and the production staff of TV Tokyo's "Shinshun Wide Jidaigeki."

Two EXILE members make drama debut

KENCHI (30) and NAOTO (26), both members of the popular group EXILE, are making there drama debut in a mobile phone series on BeeTV.
The two will co-star in "Genryo Boxer," a comedy about a pro boxer (KENCHI), whose unstoppable appetite has kept him out of the ring as he never passes the weigh-in, and a younger boxer (NAOTO) who lays "traps" of food for him.
The series will start on BeeTV on November 1.

Sarah Brightman sings for "Saka no Ue no Kumo"

Broadcaster NHK has announced that Sarah Brightman will be in charge of the main theme song for the historical drama series "Saka no Ue no Kumo." The song's lyrics are entirely in Japanese, which will be a first for the world-renowned soprano.
Titled "Stand Alone," the song was composed by Joe Hisaishi and written by Kundo Koyama. It will be included on the drama's soundtrack album, scheduled for release on November 18.
The first part of "Saka no Ue no Kumo" will start airing on November 29. The remaining two parts are planned for 2010 and 2011.

TVXQ tapped for "Tomehane" theme

Popular Korean group TVXQ has been chosen to provide the theme song for the upcoming drama series "Tomehane! Suzuri Koukou Shodoubu." This will be their first one for a Japanese drama on NHK.
The song will be a rhythmic pop tune titled "BREAK OUT!" It is planned for release as a single this winter.
The "Tomehane!" drama series was first announced in June. Adapted from a manga by Katsutoshi Kawai, the story follows a young high school girl named Yuki Mochizuki (Aki Asakura), a top judo athlete who winds up in her school's calligraphy club.

NHK will air "Tomehane!" on Thursday nights at 8:00pm, starting on January 7. |

Baijaku Nakamura stars in new "Akakabu Kenji" series

Actor Baijaku Nakamura (53) has his first starring role in a drama series next season. He will play the lead in "Akakabu Kenji Kyoto-hen," scheduled to air on TBS starting in January.
The drama is based on Shunzo Waku's "Akakabu Kenji" novel series about a kind public prosecutor named Shigeru Hiiragi, known for his Nagoya dialect and his love of red turnips. The novels have previously been adapted multiple times on television since 1980, with Frankie Sakai as the original star. Later adaptations had Isao Hashizume (68) playing the role of Hiiragi. Nakamura became the third actor to play the part in a two-hour drama special this past May.

Tokujo Kabachi!! Kabachitare! 2 Manga to Get TV Drama

Masako Ohara of the Kuwabata Ohara comedy duo has revealed in her official blog on Monday that Takashi Tajima and Takahiro Kochi's Tokujo Kabachi!! Kabachitare! 2 workplace manga will be adapted into a live-action drama series next January. The story centers around the employees of a legal document firm.
 
Ohara herself will appear in the first episode, while the main cast consists of Sho Sakurai (Honey and Clover, Yatterman) of the Arashi musical group and Maki Horikita (Always: Sunset on Third Street, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva).
Tokujo Kabachi!! Kabachitare! 2 has been running in Kodansha's Weekly Morning magazine since 1999, and there are now 18 compiled book volumes published. Both the Tokujo Kabachi!! Kabachitare! 2 manga and the original Kabachitare! manga are the creations of Naniwa Kin'yudo creator Yuuji Aoki. The original Kabachitare! manga has already been adapted into a live-action television drama series in 2001 with a different cast and an average 19.3% rating. Naniwa Kin'yudo was adapted into two live-action television drama series in 1996 and 2007.
The Tokujo Kabachi!! Kabachitare! 2 television series will premiere in January on Japan's TBS network.

Upcoming Fuji TV drama SP [The Last Promise], starring Arashi (all 5 members)

It was confirmed on the 10th that the popular group, Arashi, will be in Fuji TV's special drama "The Last Promise" (Saigo no Yakusoku) with all five of the members together, which is first since 10 years ago, and it will be aired next year in early spring.
It is a human suspense where the five coincidentally come upon a building hijack and face an unpredictable situation. It is the first time the leader Ohno Satoshi (28), Sakurai Sho (27), Aiba Masaki (26), Ninomiya Kazunari (26), and Matsumoto Jun (26) are co-star in a drama since "V no Arashi" from '99, right after their debut. The poster which have been shot for this drama has a mature atmosphere that makes us feel their growth of the 10 years.
In addition to recently starring in dramas, movies and stage plays solo and earning high reviews of their acting skills, their variety shows are are popular with every ages. Their DVD "All the BEST! 1999 - 2009", which was released on the 28th of last month, has sold 500,000 copies, which is a first of the history of music DVDs, and they are unstoppable.
Ohno says, "I want to act keeping 10 years worth of experiences and feelings in mind", and Matsumoto says "I am a bit embarrased...(laugh), but I am looking forward to the day the five of us film together."
