Flores Wants Even More Faces At Mestalla

After just bringing in five new players, Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores maintains a couple more recruits are vitally needed to strengthen the squad a a couple more recruits are vitally needed to strengthen the squad.

Flores has already been busy in this summer with the purchases of Ivan Helguera, Alexis, Javier Arizmendi and Timo Hidebrand to the first-team squad, followed by the signings of two highly-rated youngsters in Sunny and Juan Manuel Mata.

Yet the Valencia coach firmly believes more spending is required,

揥e have a base of quality, with many young internationals and now we lack two or three pieces which would allow us to be better balanced," he said.

The arrival of the new players has increased the competition for places at a club that has had little activity in the way of selling players during the transfer window.

Therefore the fight for a first-team place looks to be settled between two or three players in nearly every position, something which Sanchez Flores feels is the ideal situation,

"(The competition) is the best thing that could happen to us," said Sanchez Flores.

"Nobody, either in goal or in any other position, starts with the shirt (in their possession)."

This reference to the keeper抯 jersey prelude抯 an interesting issue, as Santiago Canizares position is now under serious threat for the first time in a decade by another established goalkeeper in the large frame of German Hildebrand.

However, so far, Flores has liked what he has seen during the build-up to the season opener, which will be next months Champions League qualifying round,

"I am happy because the players have come back well and ready to work. To have all the players together for the first time in three years is an advantage.

"This is going to help us prepare well for the Champions League qualifiers."

David Villa Grateful For Transfer Rumours, But Flattered By Valencia, But Flattered By Valencia

While David Villa reacted positively to the news that many of Europe's top clubs had been chasing his signature this summer, he was also flattered by Valencia's dogged determination to hold onto the young striker...

David Villa Grateful For Transfer Rumours, But Flattered By Valencia

Valencia's David Villa seems set to remain at the Mestalla - thanks to his club's refusal to entertain bids for the player.

The Asturian forward, however, is not angry at this. He smiled, "For me, it's flattering that there is so much interest from other clubs.

"However, what is more flattering is that the club rejects them; instead, it wants to keep me and help Valencia continue to progress."

Speaking from the club's training camp in Holland, Villa added that this philosophy was integral to the prospects of Valencian success. He said, "Retaining the players who are key to the club [helps to build] a greater Valencia."

He also went on to praise the new signings - particularly in the defence - who will help Los Che build for next season. Villa was particularly impressed with the younger signings, including ex-Getafe centre back Alexis.

He said, "Young people have arrived with hunger and quality, and desire to become a famous player."

Villa himself is no stranger to that mentality. In his early 20s, he moved from Gijon to Zaragoza in an attempt to progress his own career. Two excellent seasons later, he arrived in Valencia and had to prove once more that he could make the step up.

Few would say that he has not succeeded.

Valencia's Del Horno Rejects Bayern Switch

Out-of-favour defender Asier del Horno is surplus to requirements at the Mestalla. However, the player had made it very clear that he'll only leave for a club that's suitable to him. German giants Bayern Munich, seemingly, is not one of these...

Following on from earlier news regarding Asier del Horno's stringent transfer demands, the international defender has now rejected a transfer to Bavarian cracks Bayern Munich.

The left back reportedly told the Valencia management that he has no intention of moving to Germany. Mindful of negative experiences in London with Chelsea, he does not want to leave Spain again.

The only way he'd consider a move abroad is if he was duly compensated. Seemingly, Valencia seem unwilling to meet his expectations in this regard.

Despite arriving in a high-profile move from Stamford Bridge last summer, Asier failed to make an impact in the Valencia first team, starting just six league matches after recovering from injury.

Now, his relationship with coach Quique Flores is apparently at a low point. The player, who has five years left on his deal, sees no reason to make things easy for the club, reasoning that this situation is of their making, and not his.

The defender would apparently love to return to Athletic Bilbao, with whom he spent five years, if an appropriate deal can be reached.

For now, however, Bayern are yet another European club who have no hope of landing Asier del Horno.

Alexis: "I'm No Sergio Ramos; I Just Want To Play For Valencia"

Valencia's new defender, Alexis, played in Los Che's training game against Lokomotiv Sofia. Now, he's looking forward to more time on the pitch as he seeks to live up to the hype...

Alexis Ruano spoke out after his non-competitive debut in the 0-0 draw between Valencia and Lokomotiv Sofia, hoping to achieve more of the same as his career with Los Che begins.

He said of his centre-back performance, "I worked very well with [Carlos] Marchena; now I hope for more opportunities to continue.

"I was worried that it might be harder to adapt, but I know some of the players here, like Joaquin, and that helps you settle in."

Alexis often draws comparisons with Sergio Ramos, another young defender who can play right and centre. The player, however, pointed out that he's his own man.

He added, "We are different soccer players... but I've known him since the U-15 national squad. Last year with Getafe, I was compared to him, but I'm Alexis and he's Sergio.

"But we're alike in that we give 100% on the pitch, every time."

On the subject of his versatility - most notably coach Quique Flores' plans to use him at right back if and when Miguel misses matches, following the departure of Curro Torres - Alexis was enthusiastic.

The former Getafe man said, "Being in the starting XI is fine in any case, but I've played at right back before and I am comfortable there.

"But I've said before that centre-back is my natural position and my favourite one."

Alexis stated his first Valencia objective as taking part in a successful Champions League qualifying match. Los Che enter in the Third Qualifying round, which will be drawn on August 3rd, and contested starting on August 14th.

Morientes Rejects Lyon Link

Fernando Morientes has said that he wants to stay at Valencia despite strong interest from Olympique Lyonnais, who want to take him back to France.

The 31-year-old moved to Mestalla last summer from Liverpool and signed a three-year deal which he has reiterated he wants to complete.

Valencia were reported to be ready to offer Morientes as bait in their quest to prise Kim K鋖lstr鰉 from Lyon, but he is not prepared to move.

After eight years at Real Madrid, the Albacete-born striker moved to AS Monaco on loan in 2003 and enjoyed a successful campaign in the French league.

"I have excellent memories of my time in Ligue 1, in the Principality," Morientes told L'Equipe.

"I am flattered a club like Lyon thinks about me, but I am fine at Valencia where I have two years remaining on my contract."
