Benedict Cumberbatch lending his voice to The Penguins Of Madagascar
The Penguins Of Madagascar - the feature length spin-off for the DreamWorks franchise's black-and-white scene-stealers - has landed some vocal talent in the form of Benedict Cumberbatch and John Malkovich.
According to a report by The Wrap, “Malkovich will voice the film’s charming villain, while Cumberbatch will voice a high-ranking animal CIA agent hot on his trail.” There’s no word on what animal Cumberbatch will be voicing, although it couldn’t really be an otter, could it? The internet just wouldn’t be able to handle it.
It’s quite a score for the production, which will presumably put the starry line-up of the Madagascar movies - Ben Stiller, Chris Rock et al - onto the back-burner now that the focus is squarely on the penguins.
This won’t be the first solo outing for the flightless birds though, as they’ve also been in a Christmas-themed short and a TV series.
Cumberbatch’ll next be heard (and seen in motion-capture form) in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, as both dragon Smaug and The Necromancer, and he’ll be seen in Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and thesp-fest August: Osage County. Plus, there's the small matter of Sherlock series three on the the horizon...

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'The Cumberbitches have got my back' if Julian Assange attacks Wikileaks film
An ordinary person might understandably get jitters about playing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in a movie. After all, he’s a guy who has tussled with banks, political groups, and even governments and lived to tell the tale. But as any self-respecting Benedict Cumberbatch fan — or “Cumberbitch,” as some call themselves — knows, the Brit actor is anything but ordinary.
The Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star donned a series of white wigs and fake teeth to play Assange in The Fifth Estate (out Oct. 18), a drama that tracks Wikileaks’ rise to power. And he jokes that, thanks to his fans, he’s fully prepared for Assange to open fire. ”I’m sure he’ll go after me. … I’m not a bank with offshore accounts in the Canaries, I don’t fiddle my taxes, I’m not wanted for war crimes. If he goes after me, it’s going to be a waste of his extraordinary talent. But if he does, I kind of respect that because he needs to be able to answer back,” says Cumberbatch. “Anyway, the Cumberbitches have got my back, so I’ll be fine.”
Assange has pre-emptively labeled the movie “a massive propaganda attack,” but Cumberbatch says the film — which explores the friendship between Assange and his former collaborator Daniel Domscheit-Berg (played by Daniel Bruhl) – doesn’t demonize its subject. On the contrary. “I hope if I’ve done well, I’ve probably humanized someone that many people only think of in tabloid headline terms. He’s an extraordinary figure. The movie was just the opportunity to try and unlock a little about who he is and what motivates him,” says the actor, who reached out to Assange for input on his portrayal but was rebuffed. “I don’t want to upset him. So if I do, it will be distressing. But he knows that. I have communicated that to him, let’s put it like that. It’s not like we’ve had a correspondence, but I’ve made it known to him that I’m not some kind of devious character assassination where I play him as a villain.”

INTERVIEW: BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH
'With his piercing blue-green eyes, set high like an otter’s, cheekbones like car bumpers, and unruly mop of chestnut hair, Cumberbatch has the kind of looks that seem to call out across alpine mountain-tops for the adjective “Byronic”. But his energy levels are more Tigger. Offsetting the tousled, raffish, slightly boyish air is that rich Burtonesque baritone of his, last heard terrorizing the crew of the Starship enterprise in this summer’s blockbuster, Star Trek Into Darkness. Bill Condon calls it “a cello,” in which case, conversation with him can resemble a Haydn concerto, allegro con brio. The boy can talk. When I ask him a question about whether he asked Streep about the niceties of playing a real-life person, he delivers a ten-minute answer (10:32 seconds to be precise), brilliantly digressive, touching on a conversation they had about process, and music and notes, but to which actual answer, strictly speaking, is: no. “I’m sorry did I get off track?” he says blinking innocently, as if abashed by his own brilliance. He says his mother always knows he’s about to start another season of Sherlock because he starts talking double speed. “His voicemail messages are one of the great highlights of our friendship,” says Rebecca Hall who has known him since she was 13 saw him acting in a school stage production of The Taming of the shrew at harrow. “They contain whole conversations.
