Rossi set for 100th MotoGP appearance in Turkey
Camel Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi reaches another special milestone in his illustrious career this weekend as he contests his 100th consecutive premier-class race in the Grand Prix of Turkey. The Italian and his team-mate Colin Edwards travel to the Istanbul Park circuit, located 300 kilometers north west of the capital city of Ankara, looking to build on tentative first impressions of the track from last year, when they finished second and seventh respectively in a race won by Marco Melandri.
The third round of the current season will also be Rossi抯 160th appearance in all classes since making his 125cc debut in Malaysia in 1996. So far he has amassed an incredible tally of 80 victories, his latest coming just over two weeks ago in the Grand Prix of Qatar; a triumph that also moved the 27-year-old level with Mick Doohan on 54 premier-class wins, leaving him second only to the legendary Giacomo Agostini, on 68. |

MotoGP:Rider claims after Istanbul qualifying
Valentino Rossi, pole position
I'm very happy to have a pole position at this track, which has never been one of my favourites! I've had some bad moments here in the past but this year it feels like a different track for me and I'm having great fun! My M1 is very competitive, a lot more fun to ride here than in the past and the new modifications we have for our engine have made an important difference to our overall performance. The team has done a great job because we had some problems yesterday but they've found some good solutions and now Colin and I are first and second. My tyres are working well and we've found the right front for tomorrow. We need to make a final decision about the rear in the morning. With the qualifying tyre my bike really flew and I was able to do a very good lap; I started my first lap a few minutes earlier than the others and then I knew that I could improve a little bit more with the second qualifying tyre. Anyway all three of us are very close on the front row so I think it's going to be a tight battle tomorrow. Let's hope for good weather and see what happens.

Colin Edwards, 2nd
Well after the problems we had yesterday I've got to say a massive thanks to my team. They looked at the issues, got out their protractors, did their maths and worked their magic like always! The Michelin qualifier really sticks like glue for us this year and I was able to really push it. I thought I was going to run into traffic at one point on my last lap but I just kept my head down and somehow came out the other side in front. It was definitely a mistake-free lap. As for tomorrow, we need to work a little bit on our race pace - two tenths would be good but three would be even better! I think we're losing it in T3 so we need to concentrate on that part of the track. We've moved onto a different front from the 憃ld faithful' we've been using so far this year because that one was a little bit too close to the limit here, but it's working really well so we just need to make a final decision on the rear. It's a great result for the team to have us both on the front row again so let's hope to make the most of it with a similar result tomorrow! |

Casey Stoner dominated the Turkish Grand Prix for Ducati, taking his second win in the opening three races of season at a canter.
The 21-year-old Australian took the lead on the opening lap when Valentino Rossi ran wide on the exit of the uphill turn 13 and remained peerless throughout the 22 lap race, eventually coming home 6.207 seconds ahead of Toni Elias.
Stoner's second win in the first three races of 2007 also allowed him to turn a nine-point deficit to Valentino Rossi in the world championship into a ten point lead, as the Italian faded to tenth place in the race.
"We could not have asked for a better start to the season, this is by far the best season I have had - it doesn't compare to anything," Stoner said.
"The Ducati and Bridgestones are making my life easy."
Stoner and his Ducati team-mate Loris Capirossi led over the line as the field braked for the complex near the end of the opening lap.
But behind them all hell broke loose as Frenchman Olivier Jacque rubbed fairings with Dani Pedrosa's Repsol Honda, forcing the Kawasaki rider to lose control, taking Colin Edwards' Yamaha and Chris Vermeulen's Suzuki down with him.
The incident gave the Ducatis breathing space at the front of the field, but Capirossi could not keep up with his younger team-mate, and was quickly forced into a defensive mode as Rossi and Elias came back at him.
Both went by in separate moves on lap eight, with Gresini Honda rider Elias then banging shoulders with Rossi to take second next time around.
But while Elias was able to pull away to comfortably take his first podium of the season, Rossi did not have things so comfortably as his rear Michelin tyre started to fall apart.
He lost three places in one fail swoop on lap 15 at the complex as John Hopkins' move took the Suzuki by and he was followed by Marco Melandri's Gresini Honda and Capirossi.
World champion Nicky Hayden took his Repsol Honda by two laps later, and Alex Barros followed on his d'Antin Ducati.
