Create Reading Corner At Home - Raja Perempuan Of Perlis
KANGAR, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid wants the people of Perlis to create a special reading corner at their homes to inculcate reading habit.
She said apart from the government-provided facilities, the people should take the initiative to set up their own family reading corner.
"The effort to inculcate reading habit needs the cooperation from all quarters to make it easier," she said when opening the "Bacalah Manjaku" programme at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital, here Thursday, in conjunction with the hospital's 100th anniversary.
The "Bacalah Manjaku" reading corner, located at the hospital's Thalassaemia Clinic was set up with the cooperation from Perlis Public Libraries Corporation, National Library of Malaysia and the hospital's Paediatric Department.
A private company, Educate To Learn (E2L) Sdn Bhd, also contributed educational toys for the reading corner.

Raja Of Perlis Concerned Over Attempts To Undermine Social Contract
KANGAR, May 17 (Bernama) -- The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail, who celebrates his 66th birthday today, is concerned over what he described as attempts to undermine the social contract which has been the ingredient for the harmonious relations among the people.
He said that racial and religious issues played by certain quarters to further their narrow agenda were among challenges faced by the country and the people in maintaining the contract.
"I would like to stress that it is our actions that determine whether the social contract is beneficial to us. We are the ones responsible to make it a success or otherwise," he said in his speech at the investiture ceremony in conjunction with his birthday at the Istana Arau Sunday.
He said the social contract, which was agreed upon by the various races, was a pillar to the country's efforts to safeguard the interest of all races.
He reminded the people that any failure to defend the social contract was an insult to the country's forefathers who had worked tirelessly to put in place a contract, albeit an unwritten one.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also congratulated Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on his appointment as the Prime Minister and expressed gratitude to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for administering the country well during his tenure.
Earlier, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu, in his loyalty pledge, expressed the hope that the people would be with the government and contribute ideas on how to further develop the state.
Md Isa said Perlis was expected to receive RM291.54 million from the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority to develop the various sectors especially agriculture, tourism, social development, human capital and infrastructure.
"The state government will give priority to local workers in the implementation of projects under the Northern Corridor Economic Region," he said.
To enhance the delivery system, he said the State Secretary Office was finalising the 2009-2013 strategic plan which would serve as a guideline and benchmark for the public sector.
On poverty eradication, he said, until March this year the number of hardcore poor declined to 431 people from 557 people last year.

Armed Forces' Sacrifice A True Jihad - Raja Muda
SEMPORNA, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- The Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail has described the service and sacrifice of the armed forces in defending the country's security and sovereignty as a true jihad.
He said that their sacrifice was not the same as the those carried out by groups around the world who perpetrated violence purportedly in the name of religion.
He also urged the people to emulate the professionalism of the armed forces.
"They should play their role professionally, efficiently and in a disciplined manner, just like our armed forces," he said at an iftar with armed forces personnel at the Sri Wangsa Camp here on Tuesday night.
He was accompanied by the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil and members of the Territorial Army Support Committee.
The Raja Muda also congratulated the Defence Ministry and Bukit Aman police headquarters for continuously upgrading the infrastructure for their forces.
