Chelsea have sold striker Claudio Pizarro to Werder Bremen on a permanent transfer, and brought in Serbian international midfielder Nemanja Matic.
The Peruvian (pictured) spent last season on loan at the Weserstadion and scored 17 goals in 26 appearances, while helping them reach the UEFA Cup final.
"I am very happy we could seal the deal," Werder sports director Klaus Allofs said.
"It has been an issue for months and in the past weeks we intensified our efforts to get Claudio."
Bremen were Pizarro's first European club, spending two seasons there between 1999 and 2001 before moving to Bayern Munich then Chelsea.
He never settled at Stamford Bridge after joining in 2007, and scored just twice in 28 appearances.
"I am happy to be back as I wanted desperately to return to Werder," Pizarro said. |

Schalke Trainer Felix Magath: Bayern Munich’s Dominance Is Over
After leading Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title last year, Felix Magath believes that the days when Bayern dominated German football year after year are in the past…
New Schalke trainer Felix Magath believes that Wolfsburg’s title win last season may be the start of a new trend in Germany, where traditional powerhouse Bayern Munich don’t enjoy their usual dominance.
With just two games played this season it is Wolfsburg and Schalke who sit top having won both their matches, whereas the Bavarians have only taken a point from each of their two outings thus far.
Following match day two of the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg trainer Armin Veh stuck the knife in by claiming that Bayern were not as far ahead of their competitors as they used to be in the past.
That drew a quick riposte from the likes of Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, but former Bayern trainer Felix Magath believes Veh has a point.
“Bayern do not have a special position in Germany any more. Their dominance is over,” Magath told the Tageszeitung.
“The club have to get used to a new trainer team and a new philosophy this season and I don’t know how long that will take. It could be that Bayern take a while to find their rhythm as it is not easy to get everything harmonised. Therefore the league is more balanced.”
Last season under Juergen Klinsmann, Bayern went through the whole season without ever once leading the table, before eventually finishing second to Wolfsburg.
“If things don’t happen quickly at Bayern and they’re slow to get used to the new trainer team, then it could be difficult for them to regain their special position,” Magath continued.
“But at some point their dominance will return. You have to consider Bayern Munich as the exception in German football as they are on a completely different level.”
However, with his Schalke side currently at the top of the nascent table, Magath doesn’t believe that the Koenigsblauen can be considered a serious challenge to Bayern this season.
“The current table is not a true representation to be able to predict the rest of the season. Bayern don’t have to be worried about us at the moment. For us the Championship isn’t really an issue.”
