The tools of a football training session are familiar the world over. Balls, nets, cones, dummies, flags. Some sessions, however, are just different.
Last night, in the warmth of a Middle East evening, Manchester City manager Mark Hughes stood on the touchline of a purpose-built pitch, laid in only three months, in the shadow of Abu Dhabi's stunning Emirates Palace Hotel.
Beneath the gaze of the city skyline and the seven-star hotel that is his home whenever he comes here, Hughes talked football with the men at the heart of the world's richest football club.
It's Palace up next: City train in the shadow of their seven-star hotel
Clad in traditional Arab dress, City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and three associates looked - and were greeted - like royalty. They are not, of course, but the club's owner Sheik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan most definitely is.
It is the Sheik's money on which sky blue dreams are now built. He has not been to a City game yet but has promised he will before the season is out. His purchase and transformation of a middling English football club has been as remarkable as was the scene here last night at what will now become their regular winter training base. |

- Agensi

Hughes: Robi speculation will cease
Mark Hughes is convinced the future of record signing Robinho will look a lot more settled once he is back playing again.
The £32.5million Brazilian has made the trip to Abu Dhabi this week for a spot of warm weather training as he looks to step up his recovery from an ankle injury picked up on international duty in September.
Not that Robinho's absence has meant he has been out of the news.
Instead, his status - and reported unhappiness - at Manchester City has been dissected, to the extent that it now seems certain he will leave in January.
Yet Hughes insists such talk is groundless.
Having swept Robinho up from Real Madrid on the very last day of last season's summer transfer window, when City's mega-rich new owners wanted to make a statement of intent, the Blues chief has had no indication the 25-year-old wants to move elsewhere.
Hughes is not naive enough to believe his words alone will silence the speculation. But he does feel it will help, as would getting Robinho back on the pitch again.
"At the moment Robinho is not fit," said Hughes.
"But people still want to talk about him because he is a high-profile player.
"They have not had the opportunity to talk about him play so, for them, the next best thing is to speculate about his future and there are a number of people out there who are making mischief.
"But you are talking about people on the outside taking a view on a situation which they have no real insight into.
"I am quite clear and Robinho should be quite clear that his future is very much with City.![](static/image/smiley/default/titter.gif) ![](static/image/smiley/default/titter.gif)
"There is no reason to think that will change any time soon."
Hughes did confirm Robinho was able to join in a group session for a short while immediately prior to the current international break.
The Confederations Cup winner should be able to build on that this week as City put the dank Manchester weather behind them and enjoy the sunshine Robinho is said to crave.
And while no precise timescale has been put on the striker's return to action, Hughes is making optimistic noises.
"Hopefully he will be an option very soon," said the Welshman.
"He trained with the first-team, just for part of the session, before we came out here, and hopefully he will do the same this week.
"Eventually, the aim is to get some game time into him, even if that means arranging something behind closed doors."
Although the naturally reserved nature of the people in this part of the world ensured there would never be any groups of fans camping outside City's team hotel, the relaxed feel around the Blues camp gives off the impression of a team very much in home surroundings.
Without banging the drum too much, City have been a visual presence around their base at the Emirates Palace - one of the most exclusive and palatial hotels in the world - and have been provided with a purpose-built training ground to do their daily sessions, which Hughes has scheduled for the evening, when the temperatures have at least dropped below 30 degrees.
Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland and Pablo Zabaleta are among the most notable figures in a squad shorn of most of its star names, who are required for international duty elsewhere.
As there is no stated plan in place, it is difficult to know exactly what the Abu Dhabi United Group want in return for their massive investment, which is approaching £500million so far, with the promise of much more to come.
The idea they have committed themselves so heavily just because they can is a strange one, yet it cannot be entirely discounted, especially if it helps Abu Dhabi become the kind of tourist haven nearby Dubai has already turned into.
Certainly Hughes cannot see a point when City's new owners, who were brought to the club by Thaksin Shinawatra, become tired.
"It has been evident in the year that we have worked together that this is a long term plan," he said.
"It is not going to happen overnight. The owners are very understanding of that.
"They are excited by how far we have progressed in a short space of time. But they know it is a long-term thing.
"We have put a platform in place to ensure we have success in future."
