MICHAEL ESSIEN has been ruled out for up to SIX MONTHS with a cruciate ligament injury.

SunSport has learnt the Chelsea midfielder, who was injured playing for Ghana against Libya on Friday, will have to go under the knife after rupturing his anterior ligament.

A club statement read: 揗ichael has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo an operation as soon as the majority of the swelling has subsided. We expect this to happen in a week抯 time.

揑n the meantime, Michael has started rehab in the aqua therapy centre at Cobham which will improve the condition of the knee prior to surgery.

"A return to full fitness is not expected for several months.

ABE BA n ADEK UBI bleh maen minggu ni .. yihaaaaa

Felipe Scolari believes Didier Drogba could be fit enough to make an appearance against Manchester City on Saturday.

Speaking exclusively to Chelsea TV's Blues News on Tuesday evening, the World Cup-winning coach said he felt Drogba's knee was improving considerably and that he may be able to play 45 minutes at the City of Manchester Stadium this weekend.

He also stated that John Mikel Obi's return to fitness was coming along, and that he was now in superb condition for the fixture.

'These are the players that I received for training this week, Mikel is in very good condition and Didier grows up every day and grows up every week,' said Scolari.

'He [Drogba] is not completely ready for the game against Manchester City, but in my idea he may be possible to play 45 minutes.

'He is starting, step-by-step, to arrive in the same situation [in fitness terms] as last season.'

But with today's news that Michael Essien will be out for several months with a cruciate ligament injury, it was not all positive information for the Chelsea manager.

And with only two days to train his returning international players for Saturday's game, the manager is just hoping there are no more injuries to deal with.

'Many players are in national teams and the bad news that we received a few days ago is that Essien has an injury.

'If they play in the national teams then I am happy about this, but we know about Manchester City and what Chelsea can expect there, it is a big game.

'We have Thursday and Friday for training, and if they arrive in good condition, without injury, then it is okay for us.'
