Back to back releases for UTV with THE NAMESAKE

One can't really remember the last time something like this happened, but the fact is that a big production house of the stature of UTV would be having two of it's films releasing on back to back weekends.
While this week they came up with Milan Luthria's HAT TRICK, coming Friday would see the release of their THE NAMESAKE which is co-produced by them. Directed by Mira Nair of MONSOON WEDDING fame, THE NAMESAKE is based on Jhumpa Lahiri's novel by the same name and stars Kal Penn, Irrfan Khan and Tabu in lead roles.
With a tagline of 'Two Worlds. One Journey', this FOX SEARCHLIGHT presentation has won rave reviews overseas where it has already released and is expected to meet with a similar response once it hits the Indian screens on March 23rd. |

SEI completes 50 days at box office

Biggest film of the year so far (in terms of starcast and scale), SALAAM E ISHQ, has completed 50 days at the box office.
Released with much fan fare, this well made film invited strong negative word of mouth within 3 days of it's release owing to it's long duration of 3 and a half hours. Result was that audience chose to take duration as the single most parameter to decide on watching the film and gave it a cold shoulder after a very good first weekend.
After taking a mighty fall in the second weekend, the film remained somehow steady over the weeks and hence has managed to reach till this distance where it has survived a 7 weeks run at the box office.
Though the film is being termed as a box office failure by most, the fact is that it has earned 25 crores for itself with good revenue expected from DVD sales and satellite re-runs. |

CALL for promotional video of 1:40 Ki Last Local

Trend of incorporating a promotional music video for a film has now become a MUST for every film, whether big or small.
If for HAT TRICK, 'Wicket Bachao' is the chant of the nation to reflect the cricket theme of the film, for upcoming 1:40 KI LAST LOCAL, which has it's base set on a missed local train, the music video has railway station as it's set.
Titled 'Laree Choote', the track comes from Pakistan based 'Call - the Band' with Xulfi as the lead singer and lyricist. The video features Abhay Deol and Neha Dhupia dancing along to the beats with horde of extras in the background. The good part about the dance here is that it doesn't get into an unwanted vigorous mode and remains steadily paced to suit the dark comedy genre of the film.
The music of the film has just been released with songs composed by Sandesh Shandilya, Ankur Tewari, Tknow Frankcorsi, Aqueel and Sanjeev apart from CALL. |

Mona Chopra's RED SWASTIK finally hitting the screens

Ever since it's inception, Mona Chopra's RED SWASTIK has been in news.
A sex-psychological-thriller with the film revolving around the character of Mona, who plays Smita in the film, RED SWASTIK has finally come close to the release after making headlines for around an year.
Though Mona made her debut with a small time film TIME PASS and followed it up with bit roles in DOSTI and JAWANI DIWANI, she got full on roles in NAUGHTY BOY and GAME, none of which made any impact at the box office.
In RED SWASTIK, producer director Vinod Pandey promises a meaty outing for Mona who has her next release coming in the form of RAQEEB that has Tanushree Dutta as the lead actress. |

JAKARTA - Dunia seni Indonesia kembali Berduka. Chrisman Rahardi atau Chrisye (58) penyanyi dan pencipta lagu terbaik yang dimiliki Indonesia, meninggal dunia Pukul 04.08 WIB Jumat pagi (30/3/2007). Chrisye meninggal di rumahnya di Jalan Asem II Cipete Jakarta Selatan.
Chrisye didiagnosa mengidap penyakit kanker paru-paru sejak 19 juli 2005 dan dirawat di RS Pondok Indah. Sebelum itu, Chrisye didiagnosa mengalami kelainan pada tulang belakang dan menjalani Hiydro terapi. Karena kondisinya memburuk, Chrisye dilarikan ke RS Mount Elizabeth Singapura dan didiagnosa mengidap kanker stadium lanjut disertai iritasi syaraf tulang belakang.
Chrisye meninggalkan seorang istri, Yanti Noor dan empat orang anak yaitu, Nissa, Risty, Pasha dan Marsha.Saat ini Crisye disemayamkan di rumah duka, dan rencananya almarhum akan dimakamkan di TPU Jeruk Purut, Jakarta Selatan, seusai shalat Jumat. |

Get ready for Danny/Sunny face off after 6 years

All those who had been missing Danny Denzongpa from action have a reason to cheer about.
After his comeback film HAT TRICK last Friday, he would be seen again on the silver screen at the end of the month. The film? BIG BROTHER!
Well, that's not the only reason to be elated. Because the fact is that BIG BROTHER also brings back Danny and Sunny to have a face/off, 6 years after they last confronted each other in the hit film INDIAN [2001].
Prior to that, both were seen in one of the most powerful roles of their career in Rajkumar Santoshi's GHATAK [1996].

You loved watching Gurubhai's rise to fame in GURU and the relaxed life of Silsila in TRAFFIC SIGNAL, didn't you?
So now is the chance to meet them at your home by bringing the original DVDs of the two films that have just been out on stands. From box office perspective, Mani Ratnam's GURU has been the biggest hit of the year while still raking in moolah after a business of over 40 crores.
On the other hand TRAFFIC SIGNAL by Madhur Bhandarkar has been a decent success too with collections nearing the 9 crore mark.
While GURU has mainly been a one man show with Abhishek Bachchan running the show from beginning till the end, TRAFFIC SIGNAL is an ensemble piece with each of the characters ranging from Kunal Khemu, Konkana Sen and Ranvir Shorey to Neetu Chandra, Upendra Limaye and even children, beggars and eunuchs having a role to play in the film's success. |

Get ready to ensure that 'hips don't lie' as Colombian singer Shakira comes over to India this weekend.
The D day is Sunday, March 25, when Mumbai would be hosting 'Nokia Shakira Live Concert' at the MMRDA grounds, Bandra-Kurla Complex.
Expected to be a sell out event, it would come a couple of days after India clashes with Sri Lanka in a decider-of-sorts World Cup Cricket match. If India goes on to win that match, it would only make the concert further more hip-n-happening (pun intended). |

Adlabs has picked up Sanjay Suri's SAY SALAAM INDIA and would be presenting it all over as the film releases on March 30.
SAY SALAAM INDIA is a story that begins with cricket, continues with cricket and ends with cricket. It is a film that has everyone involved in the narrative attached to cricket by some means - good, bad or downright ugly. But then as the saying goes, may the best team win. And something similar is expected as the film culminates into a climax.
The story of SAY SALAAM INDIA revolves around a bunch of 4 boys (Viru, Mahi, Shakeel and Guri) who come from a humble background and don't have riches to their disposal.
But there is something that they have in abundance - passion to excel, passion to prove a point and passion to do everything that it takes to bring them closer to their goal - CRICKET! The man who coaches them? Hari Sadu [Sanjay Suri].

Viju Shah back with SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM

Viju Shah, who had just one release each in the last three years, ASAMBHAV [2004], SHIKHAR [2005] and YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA [2006] would be starting the year 2007 with SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM.
Though the film has music by Himesh Reshammiya, Viju has been roped to create the background score of the film. To suit the chic-n-peppy mood of the film, Viju comes across as just the right choice for the background score if one considers the kind of techno music he has been giving over the years for films that include MOHRA, VISHWATMA, GUPT, AAR YA PAAR, YALGAAR and many more.

After a togetherness for years during the making of SOCHA NA THA, it's lead pair of Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia would now be on the opposite sides as their films come within breathing distance of each other this April.
Hence while EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL starring Abhay in the lead along with Neha Dhupia would be hitting the screens on April 13th, a week later Ayesha would be bringing along her love story in Tusshar Kapoor led KYA LOVE STORY HAI.
Incidentally while EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL has been in the news for around 2 years with the release date finally being closed after months of speculation, KYA LOVE STORY HAI has been relatively a quickie in the making with news about it just beginning to make rounds.
There is coincidence though about the two films as each of them has a debutant director at the helm. While EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL is directed by Sanjay Khanduri, KYA LOVE STORY HAI has Lovely Singh as the man behind the megaphone. |

Would TRRP and METRO change music industry fortunes?

Hindi music industry has been going through a dull phase.
None of the new releases have smashed the charts with old war horses like GURU, SALAAM E ISHQ, DHOOM 2 and ANWAR continuing to top the charts for months now. The only album to have arrived this year and done consistent business over the weeks has been NAMASTEY LONDON while HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. and SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM have been trying to create some ripples.
Now all eyes are set on upcoming music releases of METRO and TA RA RUM PUM, both of which are expected to arrive in quick succession. While former has music by Pritam who has given three good albums - JUST MARRIED, HAT TRICK and KYA LOVE STORY HAI - this year, TRRP has Vishal Shekhar at the helm who have started the year on a decent note with HTPL.
Incidentally both the films are backed by top production houses and close rivals UTV and YASH RAJ FILMS. Now this one would be one interesting battle to witness! |

Tusshar threatened for arrest in South Africa

While 'Miss You Everyday' is on air and the hype on Kareena Kapoor's 'It's Rocking Yaara Kabhi Ishq To Karo' is brimming, not many are aware of what happened during the shoot of 'Gumsum Hai Dil Tera', the new song from the forthcoming 'Kya Love Story Hai', which is currently playing on television.
This jingle-like song was shot in an open-air bus in Cape Town (South Africa). It seems the unit was shooting the song on the outskirts of the city and had not taken permission to shoot on the bus. As bad luck would have it, they got caught by patrolling cops who disrupted the shoot for over an hour and even threatened to arrest the lot of them besides levying a heavy fine.
So was the fracas resolved eventually or were there any financial casualties? "It was sorted out! And we didn't have to bribe them either!" laughs Tusshar when quizzed about the episode. "We blagged our way through!" he adds. |

Well, don't be alarmed as we clarify the matter. It is not a kind of 'supari' which in 'mumbaiya' lingo stands for the money given for killing a person. Instead it is a 'supari' brand that Emraan Hashmi is endorsing currently.
A special scented 'supari' which is coming on a leading brand; it has its latest promo on air that has Emraan driving a mobike with a helmet on a la DHOOM!
Well, it has to be said that the promo isn't quite the kind that would make the elite get hooked on to the 'supari' and is mainly aimed at the class which comes in hordes to watch a Hashmi starrer on single screens. |

After DELHII HEIGHTS that has Jimmy Sheirgill in a central role comes RAQEEB - RIVALS IN LOVE. And Jimmy is highly excited about it!
Ask him why and he replies, "Well, I have been looking for different kind of roles in each of my releases and the track record over the last few months, if one looks at BAS EK PAL, EKLAVYA - THE ROYAL GUARD, DELHII HEIGHTS and now RAQEEB - RIVALS IN LOVE says it all. So after playing horde of exciting characters, RAQEEB has me playing a struggling actor who has been going through a screwed up career and now wants to give one last shot to make his life rock."
So how does his character come on screen? "My character is that of a struggler with grey shades and I can assure you that whenever I come on screen, there would be 'seetis' and 'taalis' all over. Big B, a dozen odd singers and an ode to cricket

With the cricket fever reaching an all time high after India's loss and subsequent win in the ongoing World Cup, Big B too hasn't been behind as he makes an appearance in the latest music video based on the theme of cricket to hit the music channels.
Titled 'Come On Come On Let's Play The Game', the song is composed by Shamir Tandon and has Big B narrating an inspiring passage at the song's beginning and the end. The highlight of the song is coming together of a dozen odd professional and amateur singers who get together behind the mike to croon.
The number is sung by artists who range from Kailash Kher, Roop Kumar Rathod and Vasundhara Das to Shweta Shetty, Anushka, Babul Supriyo and many more. In addition there are some unknown faces including kids who go all out to inspire the viewers by getting into a passionate mood as some original footage from India's recent successes in cricket is interspersed into the video. |
