Hughes: City-Chelsea Now Bigger Than Liverpool-United
A sign of the changing landscape in the Barclays Premier League is the fact that Mark Hughes, manager of newly mega-rich Manchester City, believes his team抯 clash with Chelsea at Eastlands on Saturday抯 is a bigger deal than the same day抯 Anfield collision of Liverpool and Manchester United - traditionally one of, if not the, biggest fixture in the Premier League calendar.

PRE-MATCH BRIEFING: MAN CITY V CHELSEA Manchester City have not breached Chelsea's net in 710 minutes, since Nicolas Anelka's penalty against us in October 2004. :re:

City have regularly been taken to the cleaners at Stamford Bridge - last season's 6-0 being a case in point. At the City of Manchester stadium, though, they have often caused Chelsea problems without breaching our defence.:re:

In this fixture last season Chelsea played a patient counter-attacking game with Salomon Kalou and Michael Essien influential. City capitalised on Chelsea'slack of trust after Richard Dunne's early own goal to create openingsand might have scored before Kalou sealed the win soon into the secondhalf. It finished 2-0 and might have been more but for some excellentsaves by Hart. :re:

The influence of Chelseaold boys is extending throughout the Premier League. At City those withStamford Bridge connections are manager Mark Hughes, first team coachEddie Niedzwiecki (an excellent goalie for the Blues in the 1980s), goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock (understudy to the likes of Dmitri Kharine and Ed de Goeyin the 1990s), all of whom came over from Blackburn in the summer, andof course close season transfers Shaun Wright-Phillips:kant: and TalBen-Haim. :kant:

Nicolas Anelka used to ply his trade in light blue too, of course. Anelka's 11th minute penalty for City in October 2004 at Eastlands inflicted our only defeat of our first Premier League winning season.:re:

Manager Sparky's record against Chelsea is won one, drawn one and lost eight; goals scored four, against 19. The sole victory came in May 2006 when Rovers beat Chelsea 1-0 at Ewood. Rovers didn't score against Chelsea in the four league games since.:re:

East Manchester is happy hunting ground: Chelsea have lost only two of our last 19 league matches at Maine Road and the City of Manchester Stadium.City's win in 2004 is their only one in 11 since the Premier Leaguestarted in 1992. Of our other nine meetings there we have won eight anddrawn one.

In 22 games between the clubs since the PremierLeague started Chelsea have won 16, City have won two and there havebeen four draws, Chelsea goals 41, City goals 11.

We are looking for a seventh successive victory against the light Blues.:re:

Chelsea have achieved the double over City in the last three seasons without conceding a goal.:re:

TheBlues are on the longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League of24 (17 wins and seven draws) matches since the defeat at the Emiratesin December - our only loss in 34. We remain the only top flight clubyet to lose a league game in 2008.:re:

DECO MAKES INSTANT IMPACT

Posted on: Fri 12 Sep 2008

Decohas capped a dream start to life in England by winning the BarclaysPlayer of the Month Award at the very first opportunity.

The summer signing from Barcelona has made animpressive start to life in the Barclays Premier League, scoring twiceand being credited with a further two assists in just three games, asthe Blues soared to the top of the table and retained our unbeatenrecord going into September.

On receiving the accolade, he said: 'Forme it's a pleasure and honour to have got here and managed to have agood start to the season. Of course this is just a start - what'simportant is to get to the end and still be playing this well. I thinkthat's important, I'm very proud and happy with this result.'

Deco's creative talents were first showcased inthe 4-0 win over Portsmouth in the season opener at Stamford Bridge, where his assist for Nicolas Anelka's goal was improved by a 25-yardstrike to round off the scoring.

In the closely contested 1-0 victory over Wiganthat followed he shone once more, as another long-range strike, thistime from a third-minute free-kick, proved the difference. Hiseffectiveness from set pieces continued in the 1-1 home draw withSpurs, where his corner produced the opening goal from a JulianoBelletti flick.

Deco, Luiz Felipe Scolari's debut signing, is thefirst Chelsea player to scoop the award since Petr Cech back in March2007, and the only Portuguese player other than Christiano Ronaldo tocollect the prize.

The decision was made by the Barclays AwardsPanel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

Scolari Empathises With Clarke Position

In the wake of Steve Clarke handing in his resignation to Chelsea, head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari claims he can understand why...

Steve Clarke has been reportedly unhappy in his role as assistant manager at Chelsea ever since charismatic manager Jose Mourinho was axed by Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

The appointment of Gianfranco Zola at West Ham United signalled endless speculation that Steve Clarke was set to join the east London revolution as Clarke and Zola both played in the same Chelsea side that saw the Blues lift a number of cups in the pre-Abramovich era.

Upon hearing the news that Clarke will no longer be his right hand man, Scolari is quoted by the BBC as saying: "Now I have been told he is going I am sad but I understand Steve. All people have projects in their life. I don't agree with his decision but I am happy for him because I like Stevie."

"I like him as a person and as a coach and I wish him all the best," he concluded.
