Mercedes completes Brawn GP takeover

(CNN) -- German car manufacturer Mercedes completed a takeover of the rebranded Brawn GP Formula One team on Monday, after its parent company Deimler acquired all remaining shares from team principal Ross Brawn and his management partners.

In collaboration with its largest shareholder Aabar, Deimler purchased the remaining 24.9% of the team, which is now known as Mercedes GP.

German corporation Deimler initially bought a 45.1% share of the team when it was called Brawn GP in November 2009, and that stake has now risen to 60%. Aabar, a global investment company owned by the Abu Dhabi government, now owns 40% of Mercedes GP.

"Daimler and Aabar's acquisition of the remaining 24.9% stake will be a further step in the consolidation and strengthening of our team for the future," Brawn told the official F1 website.

"I remain fully committed to our team for the long-term, along with the management team and all of our employees. We all look forward to the challenge of making our team successful, and proudly representing Mercedes-Benz."

The Brawn GP team competed in the elite motorsport for only one season, after the completion of a management buyout of the Honda Racing team in February 2009.

The 2009 season was a huge success for the British-based team, as they clinched the constructors' title as well as the drivers' championship through British racer Jenson Button.

The team was renamed Mercedes GP for the 2010 campaign, and achieved a fourth-place finish in the constructors' standings.

The German duo of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher and 25-year-old Nico Rosberg will once again race for the team in 2011.

Elsewhere, last year's double world champions Red Bull have announced a sponsorship deal with luxury carmaker Infiniti.

The Japanese manufacturer, which is parented by Nissan, has a marketing agreement with the British-based marque which will cover the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Infiniti's logo will now be present on Red Bull's new RB7 car and their drivers' overalls.

Team principal Christian Horner hailed the new deal and said the agreement will have both commercial and technical benefits for Red Bull.

"The technical wealth and resources that Infiniti have at their disposal through Nissan is quite phenomenal," Horner told CNN.

"As an independent team, it was the one piece that Red Bull previously didn't have compared to the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes. So for us, it's important as a technology partner and a commercial partner."

German driver Sebastian Vettel became the youngest-ever winner of the drivers' championship for Red Bull in 2010, and the 23-year-old will begin the defense of his crown at the Australian Grand Prix on March 27.

Brawn £100m better off after Merc sale

Ross Brawn should go into the 2011 F1 season with a smile on his face whatever Mercedes GP's on-track woes following last week's buy-out by Daimler and Aabar.
Ross Brawn's decision to rescue the ailing Honda F1 team and rebrand it eponymously has yielded more than just 2009's world championship double, business analysts have revealed.

The Briton acted to preserve jobs at the Brackley base where BAR and Honda had made their home while in F1 and, even though Jenson Button's improbable title success will remain among the highpoints of his professional career, Brawn will no doubt look back on the decision with a wry smile after reportedly pocketing around £100m from the sale of the team to Daimler and Aabar Investments last week.

F1 business analysts Christian Sylt and Caroline Reid confirmed that the deal, which sees the now Mercedes GP team move entirely into the hands of Daimler and Abu Dhabi-based Aabar, provides a major return on the nominal £1 Brawn paid for the former Honda team in a management buyout in 2009. The remaining 24.9 per cent of the team changed hands last week for around £45m, completing a takeover which had begun with the purchase of an initial 75.1 per cent stake in November 2009.

Although the acquisition is conditional on clearance from the German Bundeskartellamt, it is seen as a clear signal concerning the long-term ambitions being held for Daimler's premium brand in F1. After Brawn GP's double championship in 2009, last season was seen as something of an anti-climax for Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher combining for just three podium finishes and fourth in the constructors' championship, but the team is already talking of better things with its second car, having had longer to work on the design and development programme.

That said, however, the team is hoping to discover the reasons for a reported two-second gap between its WO2 and the winter pacesetters when F1 testing resumes - and concludes - in Barcelona this week [see story here].

Schumi: We'll fight for the top places

Michael Schumacher is convinced Mercedes GP will be able to "fight for the top places" this season.

After struggling during the early pre-season tests, everything fell into place for the Brackley outfit in the final winter test at the Circuit de Catalunya as Schumacher posted the fastest time in the updated W02.

The seven-time World Champion feels they will be competitive this year after a disappointing 2010 campaign.

"We are going in the right direction. Definitely," Schumacher told German agency SID. "We should be in a good position this year. But as to whether we already have a winning car - for this assessment I would like to first wait a few races.

"Anyway, with the car we will be able to fight for the top places, and that is good news. The team did a great job."

Many people expected Schumacher to challenge for the Championship last year but he failed to make it onto the podium.

The German, though, says he was realistic about his chances during his first season back in the sport.

"I never thought that I would come back after three years and everything would be as before," he said. "I am a realist in this respect... it is true that the re-acclimatisation has taken longer than I hoped, but I was always clear that it would be difficult and that there would be no guarantee of success. I am the type who is encouraged by challenges."

He added: "We are talking about a highly complex, highly competitive and ever-changing sport - so you cannot expect that things will always run as desired. It is important to stay strong and keep concentrated on the work. We did that and I am convinced that Mercedes will become a Championship contender."

As for his predictions for the upcoming season, the 42-year-old believes defending World Champion Sebastian Vettel will once again be the man to beat.

"Red Bull looks very strong, and therefore, Sebastian is a favourite going into the season.
