NSman charged with carrying firearm unlawfully
Posted: 05 September 2007 1102 hrs

SINGAPORE : The armed NSman, who was caught in Orchard Road on Monday night, has been charged in court with carrying a firearm unlawfully.

20-year-old Corporal Dave Teo Ming went missing on Sunday night from Mandai Hill Camp.

A 20-hour manhunt for CPL Teo, who had the SAR 21 assault rifle for guard duty, ended on Monday night at Cathay Cineleisure.

CPL Teo has been charged under the Arms Offences Act which states that any person who is found guilty of unlawfully carrying any firearm shall be punished with a jail term of not less than 5 years and 6 strokes of the cane.

No plea was taken and CPL Teo will be remanded for another week. His case will be mentioned next Wednesday.

Along with CPL Teo, another man was charged in court under the Arms Offences Act.

The court statement said 21-year-old Ong Boon Jun was in the company of CPL Teo who was unlawfully carrying a firearm at Champagne Hotel in Geylang on Monday morning.

It added that there was reasonable presumption that Ong knew that CPL Teo was carrying such a firearm.

The room had been booked under the name of a Thai National.

MINDEF said the Singapore Armed Forces takes a very serious view of weapon and ammunition control as well as of this incident involving CPL Teo.

The SAF has in place strict measures to control the management of both weapons and ammunition, which require that all weapons and ammunition are accounted for before any serviceman is allowed to leave camp premises.

It added that following this incident, MINDEF and the SAF are carrying out a review of security systems and will tighten controls as required.

MINDEF and the SAF will continue to assist the Police in the investigation of CPL Teo's case.

Police stresses that the safety of the public was foremost as they planned CPL Teo's capture. Maintaining operational secrecy was also vital to a safe and successful operation.

And in the interest of public safety, a decision was taken by the police not to make the information public as that might put him on his guard or make him feel cornered, and this might also endanger the public. - CNA/ch

Three vehicles found with duty-unpaid cigarettes

By Lynda Hong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 06 September 2007 2037 hrs

SINGAPORE: Three vehicles were found to have been modified and used to smuggle duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore.

They were stopped at the Woodlands Checkpoint during checks by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers on Wednesday and early Thursday morning.

The cigarettes had a market value of S$45,300.

At about 4.20pm on Wednesday, 131 cartons and 140 packets of cigarettes were found hidden at the floorboard of a car.

A few hours later, at 7.35pm, during a routine check, 200 cartons of cigarettes were found stashed in a specially-constructed roof compartment of a van.

Early Thursday morning, a car that was stopped at the checkpoint had 156 cartons and 20 packets of cigarettes hidden in its modified fuel tank and rear speaker box.

All three cases have been handed over to the Singapore Customs for further investigations.

ICA says upon conviction by the court, first time offenders can be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of duty evaded.

For second or subsequent convictions, offenders can be jailed for up to two years, as well as being fined. The offenders also face further fines based on the amount of GST evaded. - CNA/vm

Internet scams get more creative to bypass security features
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 September 2007 1743 hrs

SINGAPORE: Despite new security features, hackers and spammers are still finding creative, sophisticated ways to cause massive problems to computer systems.

In fact, observers have noticed that the brightest minds in information technology are being recruited by organised cyber gangs.

Chee Heng Loon, VP of Asia-Pacific, Sonicwall, said: "If end-users are not hiring them, if we are not hiring them, then where did all these people disappear to? The only conclusion we can come to is that a huge organisation out there is sucking out all of the skill sets and we believe they are the guys who are behind all the spamming and phishing attacks."

Nonetheless, one can still sniff out a scam by taking cues from the use of generic greeting in a scam email or when the link and the URL in the status bar do not match.

Industry watchers said it is getting easier and cheaper for hackers to launch attacks on organisations.

First, they use an email generator, which is easily available on the Internet, to produce billions of accurate employee email addresses.

Next, a "proper and official-looking" email is drawn up to ask for one's credit card number and other personal information.

In order to send billions of such emails worldwide, scammers need powerful servers and bandwidth.

Such illegal services are highly sought after by cyber gangs in Eastern Europe as well as in China.

These "Internet mafias" can provide powerful servers and bandwidth for as low as US$300 to US$700 per hour.

A recent European survey showed that one-third of office workers shared the same password for both work and personal access.

More alarmingly, 71 per cent said they would give up their password for a bar of chocolate.

Tampines West residents complete giant cross-stitch patchwork
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 September 2007 2124 hrs

SINGAPORE: Tampines West has added a giant cross-stitch patchwork, which could very well be a new Guinness world record, to its landscape.

For the past six weeks, volunteers braved needle pricks and sore eyes to create over 3,000 pieces of cross-stitch.

These were then assembled in sections for a good cause, raising S$110,000 for the National Kidney Foundation and the Tampines West Arts Fund.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, who is also the MP of Tampines GRC, said: "It wasn't too difficult, but I still missed some alignments. My eyesight is not fantastic. It took me about three days to just finish half the work, which was 30cm by 30cm and therefore I had to beg my wife to finish the other half."

Man killed an hour after buying bike
WITHIN an hour after buying a new bicycle, he was knocked down by a lorry near his workplace at Admiralty Road.

Police said that Mr Imran Mohd Yusof, 32, a logistics executive, was cycling down Admiralty Road West near the Sembawang Shipyard when the lorry hit him just after noon on Saturday.

He suffered serious head and internal injuries, and was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He died without regaining consciousness about eight hours later.

His father, Mr Mohd Yusof Mohd Ibrahim, 56, told The Straits Times that Mr Imran had gone to buy the bicycle at a shop in Sembawang on his day off.

He said, 'He wanted a bike to get around the shipyard compound because it was so big. He was cycling to his workplace - which is about a kilometre from the shop - to store the bike there when the accident happened.'

Family members rushed to hospital and managed to be with him before he died at about 8.40pm. He was buried on Sunday.

At the family apartment in Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4 on Sunday, a crowd of relatives comforted the family.

Mr Mohd Yusof said Mr Imran had graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in economics and was single.

His older boy loved his family and community dearly, said the father, a retiree. He would organise activities such as trekking for his extended clan.

He was a 'quiet boy', said his father, and was very humble. Mr Mohd Yusof would not give his son's photos to reporters because he said he wanted to respect how his son was when he was alive.

He said, 'We had pictures of him in his graduation gown and mortar hat, but he did not let us put them up in the apartment. He felt it was unnecessary.'

He added, 'You know, most times it is the son who loses his father - it is very cruel when a father has to lose his son.'

Police are appealing for eyewitnesses to call on 1800-5471818.

NAHAS PESAWAT BAJET DI THAILAND

66 MAUT BILA JET TERHEMPAS

'Juruterbang meminta terbang satu lagi pusingan.

-- AP, AFP, Reuters.

Two racist blogs taken offline
By Nazry Bahrawi, TODAY | Posted: 25 September 2007 1048 hrs

SINGAPORE : Two blogs featuring racist comments have been blocked about a week after the authorities were alerted.

Peppered with vulgarities, the postings carried derogatory remarks about Muslims in Singapore. One blog was created in August and the other earlier this month. Both were apparently created by the same person - a Singapore-based male student, if the user profile on both blogs was to be believed.

Hosted on Google's Blogger site, both blogs were taken offline last week for violating the host's "terms of service". Just before they were blocked, the sites registered more than 140 hits in total.

Trainee teacher Tanveer Khan stumbled across the blogs on 9th September. The 32-year-old immediately emailed an alert to the Media Development Authority (MDA).

Three days later, he received a reply that the police were looking into the matter. The blogs were blocked on 18th and 20th September, respectively.

When contacted, a Google spokesperson told TODAY: "When we are notified of the existence of content that violates our Terms of Service, we act quickly to review it and determine whether it violates these policies."

"If we determine that it does, we will remove it immediately."

The spokesperson added: "Blogger prohibits certain kinds of content from being hosted on its servers."

More details on specific content that violates the company's policies are at www.blogger.com/content.g.

In response to queries, the Ministry of Home Affairs said: "The Government has always maintained a strong stance against activities that could disrupt our racial and religious harmony and will not hesitate to take action against those who attempt to do so."

It added: "The Police do not patrol the Internet because it is not practicable to do so. However, when warranted, the Police will inquire and investigate conduct on the Net based on specific intelligence received or information from complaints."

While such inflammatory sites should not be allowed to exist, Hong Kah GRC Member of Parliament Zaqy Mohamad agreed that it was impossible to monitor everything on the Web.

But Mr Tanveer told TODAY: "This person has a dangerous mind and needs to be traced. He must be stopped."

With the proposed changes to the Penal Code tabled last week in Parliament, a person convicted of causing racial and religious disharmony can be jailed up to three years or fined, or both. The Bill is up for debate next month.

Said Mr Zaqy: "If the blogger is found guilty, then I will leave it to the court to decide the punishment. I don't think there should be an exception in this case." - TODAY/ym

No bail for NSman who went missing from camp with a rifle.
By Valerie Tan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 September 2007 2229 hrs

SINGAPORE: The National Serviceman who allegedly stole an army rifle and bullets will not be released on bail.

A psychiatric report submitted to the court today says 20-year-old Dave Teo Ming poses a danger to himself and others.

The full-time NSman was caught early September at Orchard Road armed with a gun and bullets after a 20-hour manhunt.

Prosecution lawyer Francis Ng argued that Dave Teo might contact his camp mates who are potential witnesses in the case.

A five-page psychiatric report submitted to court added that Teo poses a risk to others and himself.

But the judge granted him one phone call to his grandmother.

According to the lawyers, Dave Teo has not had any contact with his family members for the past two weeks.

In court, the judge granted the lawyer some time to speak to the NSman.

In a brief exchange, the lawyer said Dave appeared tired but was concerned about his grandmother and was really keen to be released on bail to see her because she's reported to be very sick with cancer.

K Mathialahan, lawyer for Dave Teo, said: "He was concerned mainly what is going to happen to his grandmother. He found out that his grandmother was seriously ill, so if he's allowed on bail he would like to visit her and spend time with her."

Ong Jun Boon, the other man on trial, was also in court and he has been charged for not reporting Teo's actions to the authorities.

Ong's parents heard that their son can be released on a S$50,000 bail but has to surrender his passport and report to the Criminal Investigations Department daily at 10am.

They have the next two days to arrange for the bail.

Meanwhile, Ong is being represented by lawyer Amolat Singh.

Dave Teo faces three charges for allegedly stealing a rifle from camp, unlawful possession of eight bullets and carrying a knife in a public place without lawful purpose in April this year.

If convicted, he is likely to be jailed a minimum of ten years and given at least 18 strokes of the cane.

The case will be heard again next Wednesday at the Community Court. -CNA/vm

Body of worker killed in demolition incident recovered
By Valarie Tan/Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 12 October 2007 1943 hrs

SINGAPORE : After a massive 10-hour operation, Civil Defence officers on Friday recovered the body of a man buried under 17 storeys of concrete debris in a construction site incident.

The man has been identified as 53-year-old Singaporean Chew Chee Mee.

He was working as an excavator operator at the demolition site of the former Asia Chambers of Commerce building.

Family members were visibly shaken when they identified the body, recovered just after 10pm.

It took 25 Civil Defence officers to extricate the body trapped under massive layers of rubble.

The incident happened during lunchtime.

Civil Defence officers said a concrete floor slab, located on the 17th storey, gave way at around 12.20pm.

It caved in and collapsed downwards bringing the other layers with it.

The debris crashed onto Mr Chew who was working in an excavator on the ground floor, sending him and the machine into the basement level, which used to be a carpark.

The Manpower Ministry and the Police are investigating the incident. - CNA/ms
Many questions remain unanswered at this point.

But what is certain is that there would have been more casualties had workers who were inside the building not gone out to lunch when the concrete slab gave way. - CNA/ms

PILU DI AIDILFITRI

ANAK DISEMADI DI RAYA PERTAMA

Allahyarham terkorban dalam nahas motosikal sehari sebelum Aidilfitri

Oleh
Khalid Khamis

New home for SIA's A380
Posted: 16 October 2007 1444 hrs

Singapore's Changi Airport will be home to the Singapore Airlines A380 fleet and when the new Terminal 3 opens early next year, 19 gates across the three terminals will be fully A380-ready, including having aerobridge access to both decks.

The new super jumbo commences scheduled service on Sunday 28 October 2007, between Singapore and Sydney as part of the three daily flights in each direction.

But the A380's first commercial service will begin slightly earlier, on Thursday 25 October 2007, with a special return flight between Singapore and Sydney.

Most of the seats on this inaugural flight were auctioned on eBay, with all of the 1.3 million dollars raised in the the auction going to three different charities.

The mystery bidder who paid more than 100,000 dollars for first and best seat on the maiden flight is Julian Hayward, a young dotcom entrepreneur.

The 38-year-old Briton whose previous adventures include taking a nuclear submarine and flying in a Russian MiG-25 fighter jet, said he wanted a "little bit of history" by flying in seat 1A on the A380.

"I'm the sort of person who acts first and thinks about it afterwards," added Hayward who has been travelling for the last five years after selling off his Internet business.

Hayward was among the select few invited to attend the ceremony in Toulouse, France where the A380 was formally handed over to Singapore Airlines.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chew Choon Seng, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Airlines said, "this delivery really marks the beginning of a new chapter for the aviation industry and we feel honoured to be the ones opening this new chapter."

Calling it a landmark day, the Chief Executive Officer of Airbus, Tom Enders, paid tribute to those in the company, especially the engineers, who had worked over the years to make it happen.

Describing the A380 as an "uncompromised clean sheet design" Enders hailed the new super jumbo not as a luxury but a necessity. "The A380, is a huge step ahead in environmental performance. This, as some have dubbed it 'Gentle Green Giant', gives airlines the opportunity for growth and innovation but with less environmental impact and unprecedented comfort."

The A380 has been hailed as an engineering project unrivalled in the aerospace industry, as it's the largest passenger plane ever built and the first in decades that features a completely new design of a passenger aircraft. - CNA/sf

MENINGGAL DUA HARI LEPAS NAHAS MALAM RAYA

Oleh
Farid Hamzah

Pengerusi Eksekutif Masjid An-Nur, Encik Abdul Rahim Mawasi, berkata:

Heartbroken, but man known for integrity...
LOSES BABY TO KEEP HIS WORD
37 years later, mum uses lookalike son to search for him
By Crystal Chan
October 16, 2007

ONE foolish moment by her husband, almost a lifetime of heartache and regret for her.

Imagine a mother's anguish at having to give away her baby just days after giving birth. Now imagine her having to do that, just because her husband had lost a bet.

This sums up what Madam Chia Ah Lek has gone through for the past 37 years.

Flashback to 1970. After a few drinks, Madam Chia's husband, Mr Chow Kong Foo, then 37, makes a bet with a friend: If his baby is a boy, his friend could have him.

Soon after, Madam Chia gave birth to a son, and her husband wanted to honour the bet. So, nine days after giving birth, MadamChia was forced to give up her baby. And that was the last time the family saw the boy they named Lye Hock.

Today, Madam Chia, now 66, has only one wish - to meet her long-lost son and enjoy a brief reunion with him.

She said she never stopped pining for the seventh of her eight children - five daughters and three sons. She said in Mandarin: 'A few days before I gave birth, my husband told me he made the bet with his friend over drinks. He did this without telling me and he didn't even apologise.

'I was very upset but I had no choice but to follow what my husband said. I was a traditional Chinese wife who was brought up to obey my husband.'

She said her husband, who died in March last year, was a man who believed in 'jiang yi qi' (Mandarin for integrity) and always kept his word. So he felt he had to honour the bet.

Madam Chia said she cried every day after giving birth till the day she had to part with Lye Hock.

She said: 'I carried him in my womb for nine months only to have him raised by someone else.'

When his friend collected him from their then-Changi Road home, Mr Chow regretted making the bet.

Madam Chia said: 'He rarely showed his emotions but he cried after his friend left with Lye Hock. After that, he was reticent about our son. But I cried whenever I thought about him. And every Chinese New Year, I feel someone is missing from our reunion dinner.

I can't help feeling angry with my late husband when I think of Lye Hock. Even though he's dead, I can't forget that his action caused me to lose my baby.'

She added: 'He wasn't a good drinker but would drink if invited by his friends. And he would get tipsy after a few sips of beer.'

The only thing the couple could take comfort in was that Lye Hock's adoptive family was relatively well-to-do.

She believed the friend, who was in his 40s at the time, had two teenage children and wanted another child.

The couple gave the Chows a hongbao containing $300 - a lot of money at the time.

Madam Chia said: 'My husband told me his friend's family lived in a shophouse at Pekin Street while we lived in a zinc-roofed hut. I was sad at losing my son, but I knew he'd have a comfortable life with his foster parents.'

Madam Chia was working as a maid then while her husband did odd jobs.

After the adoption, the friend cut off contact with the Chows, out of fear that they would try to reclaim Lye Hock.

Sighing with regret, Madam Chia said: 'I have nothing to remember Lye Hock by. We were so poor that we couldn't afford to take photos of him. The only family photos I have are my wedding pictures.'

All that Madam Chia remembers of Lye Hock is that he resembles his second brother, Hock Lye, 38, a shipyard worker.

This was why she asked Hock Lye - who lives with her in a Bedok South three-room flat - to be photographed by The New Paper.

Madam Chia said the friend's surname is Ang and his name is pronounced as Hong Hai Lang in Mandarin.

Hock Lye said: 'I hope that Lye Hock's friends or relatives will contact us when they read this report.'

Before he died, Mr Chow told the family he had heard from a friend that Lye Hock's adoptive family had moved to Queenstown.

While Madam Chia claimed her husband kept his feelings to himself, she often confided in her eldest daughter, Madam Irene Chow, 50, a spa consultant.

Madam Chow said it was her father's dying wish that they try to trace Lye Hock.

She said: 'That was why my father told us whatever he knew about Lye Hock's adoptive family. Although he never spoke about Lye Hock, his actions showed he regretted giving my brother away.'

Lye Hock would be 37 now. Madam Chia's children had tried inquiring at the National Registration Department but to no avail, as they did not have his birth certificate.

It was handed to his adoptive parents.

Madam Chia said that even if she is reunited with Lye Hock, she accepts that he is obliged to care for his adoptive parents.

She said: 'Even if we find him, I don't have too much hope that he'll acknowledge me. If he calls me 'mother', that's good.

'Otherwise, I'll be happy just to know that he's doing well.'

15-year-old girl found dead in Marsiling flat, step-father arrested

By Chua Su Sien, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 21 October 2007 2220 hrs

SINGAPORE: A 15-year-old girl was found dead in a flat in Marsiling.

Police have classified the case as murder and arrested her step-father.

Neighbours said they heard a commotion at Block 24, Marsiling Drive on Saturday night.

"Only heard a scream between 9pm and 9.30pm, that's when one of the family members came out to ask for police number," said a neighbour.

The family said someone had fainted, claimed a neighbour.

Ong Pang Hui was confirmed dead when paramedics arrived.

Police arrested her step-father, a 45-year-old Singaporean, at the scene but did not find any weapons.

The girl apparently sustained shoulder and neck injuries.

A family friend said the girl, who had just completed her Primary Six Leaving Examinations (PSLE), and her mother had come from Jilin in China five years ago.

"She's a really good girl, helps her mum take care of her younger brother. No one expected this," said the family friend.

The deceased's mother is said to be running a beauty salon and married the Singaporean four years ago, and have a four-year-old son.

Channel NewsAsia understands the couple had divorced recently and the mother moved to Marsiling together with the children.

The step-father, who is a private bus driver, is expected to be charged in court on Monday. - CNA/ir
