Report: Mubarak may step down from Egypt government within hours
NBC news cite independent sources that Egypt president will resign; Egypt PM tells BBC that Mubarak 'may step down'; CNN says Mubarak will transfer power as army chief to army.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will reportedly step down from Egypt's government on Thursday evening, according to NBC News.
NBC cites two independent sources that confirmed Mubarak's resignation, and Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq told Britain's BBC earlier Thursday that President Hosni Mubarak may step down and the situation in the country will be clarified soon.
Military and ruling party officials say Mubarak will speak to the nation soon and meet the demands of protesters. Protesters are insisting he step down immediately.
Military officials say the armed forces' supreme council has been meeting all day long and will issue a communiqué shortly that they say will meet the protesters' demands.
The ruling party chief, Hossan Badrawy, tells The Associated Press he expects Mubarak to address the nation and make an announcement that will satisfy their demands.
An Egyptian army commander, Hassan al-Roweny, told protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Thursday that "Everything you want will be realized", a Reuters witness said.
CNN television said Thursday that Mubarak would transfer his power as army chief to the army.
Roweny addressed protesters from a stage erected in the square, calling on protesters to sing the national anthem and keep Egypt safe.
As they heard his words, protesters chanted: "The people demand the fall of the regime" and "The regime has fallen."

Egypt’s Army Signals Transfer of Power
CAIRO — Egypt’s armed forces on Thursday announced that they had begun to take "necessary measures to protect the nation and support the legitimate demands of the people,” a step that suggested the military intends to take a commanding role in administering the strife-torn nation.
The announcement of an enhanced role for the military came as officials in President Hosni Mubarak’s government suggested a momentous shift in power was underway, including a possible transfer of power from Mr. Mubarak to his Vice President Omar Suleiman.
Hossan Badrawi, secretary general of the National Democratic Party (NDP), told Egyptian state news outlets and the BBC that Mr. Mubarak would "most probably" speak to the nation soon, and that he would likely step down from his post.
In testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, C.I.A. Director Leon E. Panetta said that there was a “strong likelihood” that Mr. Mubarak would step down by the end of the day.
