Spurs back in for Ayala

Tottenham are set to rekindle their interest in Valencia defender Roberto Ayala who has set his sights on a summer switch to the Premiership.
Martin Jol is looking for another defender to add depth to his squad following injury to Ledley King, and Argentinean international Ayala is seen as the ideal solution.
The veteran defender has already revealed he will not be signing a new control with Valencia and his agent has confirmed the player is looking to leave the Mestella now rather than at the end of his current deal next summer.
The Spanish giants are ready to let the 34-year-old leave and Spurs are leading the chase as Jol is short of numbers in defence.
King's injury means Calum Davenport and Anthony Gardner are battling it out for a place alongside Michael Dawson for the first few weeks of the campaign, and Jol knows with a bus campaign coming up he needs options.
Goran Bunjevcevic and Nouredienne Naybet have left the club, and Ayala is seen as the man who could provide the experience to bring the youngtsers on, as well as being a hugely capable performer himself, as illustrated as this summer's World Cup. |

Che expect Ayala stay
Valencia have said that they expect Roberto Ayala to stay at the club for another season unless they receive a suitable offer for the Argentina international.
Speculation has been rife that the veteran defender will leave Mestalla this summer, with a number of Premiership sides being linked with him.
After announcing his intention to quit the club, Ayala left for a short holiday in Argentina to see his family, but stayed two days longer than he was given permission for by Valencia.
Despite the rumours, Los Che president Juan Bautista Soler, is not concerned and has dismissed all the speculation.
"The comical story about Ayala missing two days of training is not important," he said. "This kind of thing often happens on long trips.
"This thing with Ayala is not a hot potato. He is a Valencia player until June 30 (2007) and just as the club honours contracts, we expect that the players also fulfil them.
"He will only be leaving if we receive an offer that satisfies everyone."
Valencia are also making headlines for their protracted bid to sign Simao Sabrosa from Benfica.
The Portuguese club have stated that the latest offer that they have received is ridiculous, but that position has mystified Soler who believes that he had already agreed a fee.
"I do not agree with everything that has been said by those in Portugal," he explained. "We have made a huge offer and the president of Benfica (Luis Felipe Vieira) accepted it in the presidential box at Mestalla." |
