Champions League - Robben stunner ends United interest
Eurosport - Wed, 07 Apr 21:33:00 2010
A wonder-goal by Arjen Robben ended 10-man Manchester United's involvement in the Champions League as Bayern Munich lost 3-2 at Old Trafford but went through on the away goals rule.
Wayne Rooney made a dramatic, yet curtailed, return to action and he could not prevent United exiting the competition after Robben's stunning volley on 74 minutes pulled the Bundesliga side level at 4-4 on aggregate - and sent them into the semi-finals thanks to their extra away goal.
Darron Gibson had given United the perfect start after just three minutes and when Nani struck twice more to put United into a 3-0 lead with 41 minutes on the clock, the Premier League champions appeared well set to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg.
But Ivica Olic got Bayern back into the tie just before the break and the German side were able to take full advantage of Rafael Da Silva's dismissal for a second booking on 50 minutes, with former Chelsea player Robben, who like Rooney had been a pre-match doubt, delivering the telling blow with 16 minutes remaining.
It is the first time an English club has not made the final four of the competition for seven years and the result leaves United with just the Premier League title left to play for this season.
United were handed a massive boost prior to kick-off with the news that Rooney had made a miraculous recovery from the ankle injury that only seven days previously had ruled him out for "two to three weeks".
Even Alex Ferguson had gone on record to say the striker had "no chance" of playing earlier in the week, but such are the England international's apparently remarkable powers of recovery that he took to the field at an electric Old Trafford.
He was only to last 55 minutes, with a knock to his troublesome ankle on 20 minutes eventually ending his evening, but his dramatic appearance did at least lift United from the malaise which had characterised their weekend league defeat to Chelsea.
Rooney's inclusion was one of four changes made to the team which lost the first leg with Rafael and Michael Carrick returning to the side having sat out the game in Germany.
Ferguson handed a rare start to Gibson and his bold selection policy was rewarded immediately as the young Irishman opened the scoring after just three minutes with one of his now trademark long-range efforts. Almost inevitably, it was Rooney who set him on his way towards goal with a neat lay-off.
United had taken a similarly early lead at the Allianz Arena last week, but then they failed to capitalise on their advantage and allowed Bayern back into the game.
With that disappointment fresh in the hosts' minds, they refused to take their foot off the accelerator and instead went for Bayern's jugular. They found it just four minutes later as Nani scored with a sublime flick - not dissimilar to Joe Cole's goal for Chelsea at the other end of the ground on Saturday - after Antonio Valencia had teased Holger Badstuber on the right wing.
Rooney sent a header over the bar as United - unrecognisable to the team which succumbed to Chelsea at the weekend - continued to apply the pressure on Bayern.
Rafael should have made that pressure count further on 34 minutes when he ran through on goal virtually unchallenged. But the Brazilian appeared to suffer a bout of nerves and he sent the ball wide of the post with Rooney screaming for it in the middle.
Fortunately for home side, Nani was not so profligate on 41 minutes as United extended their lead on the night to three goals, the Portuguese blasting into the roof of the net after yet more good work by Valencia to this time beat Martin Demichelis.
Nani's second made it 4-2 on aggregate and United appeared to be cruising towards the semi-finals - until a defensive lapse led to Olic pulling one back on 41 minutes - and got Bayern right back into the game.
The Croat, who had earlier been denied by a diving van der Sar at his feet, did get on the scoresheet when he finished from tight angle after having shrugged off Carrick's weak challenge as he ran onto Thomas Mueller's head on.
The goal breathed new life into Bayern and Robben signalled their intent with a shot that had van der Sar at full stretch just before half-time.
If the pattern of the game had not already turned, it certainly did five minutes after the restart when Rafael received his marching orders for a tug on the breaking Franck Ribery - his second bookable offence.
From being in a comfortable position, United suddenly found themselves with their backs to the wall, down to 10 men and without their departed talisman Rooney.
Yet United still managed to fashion a number of goalscoring opportunities and Nani would have struck a hat-trick had his 55th-minute volley not gone over the bar or had Hans-Joerg Butt not got a big hand to his effort when he was played through on goal eight minutes later.
Darron Gibson also brought a save out of Butt with a side-footer from the edge of the box but with Bayern enjoying more possession, they posed a real threat when going forward.
Ribery fired a volley on target before Robben delivered a hammer blow with 16 minutes remaining, his stunning volley from a corner nestling in the corner of van der Sar's goal.
Ferguson sent on Berbatov in a bid to grab a late goal that would have seen his side through, but with a man less and Bayern keeping possession expertly, United failed to seriously threaten the visitors' goal again.
Ribery could even have rubbed salt into United's wounds as time ran out, but his shot wide of the post mattered not as Bayern booked a semi-final date with Lyon, and in doing so ensured that English teams' dominance of the latter stages of the competition came to an end.

Bundesliga - Round-up: Draw moves up Bayern
Reuters - Sat, 10 Apr 16:53:00 2010
Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to two points despite drawing 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen, keeping their dreams of winning a treble on track.
Second-placed Schalke title chances appeared to have been severely dented when they lost 4-2 at relegation-threatened Hanover 96 earlier on Saturday but they were given fresh hope of overhauling the leaders after Bayern dropped two points.
Dutch winger Arjen Robben put Bayern ahead in the 51st minute with a penalty after Franck Ribery was brought down but Leverkusen levelled eight minutes later through Arturo Vidal.
The hosts could have snatched victory in the final minute when Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok pounced on a backpass by defender Martin Demichelis but was denied by goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt.
With four matches left, Bayern, who are also in the German Cup final and in the last four of the Champions League, have 60 points. Schalke are on 58 and third-placed Leverkusen have 54.
"We have had so many matches in the past weeks and we are still two points ahead. I can only be satisfied," said Bayern coach Louis van Gaal.
Bayern looked sluggish from the start, their energy reserves seemingly drained by their Champions League away goals win over Manchester United on Wednesday.
Livelier Leverkusen came close through a Derdiyok header before fellow Swiss international Tranquillo Barnetta rattled the post with a thundering right-footer.
The visitors took the lead early in the second half when Robben netted his 11th league goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Leverkusen levelled in the 59th after hitting the woodwork twice in a span of a minute, through Stefan Kiessling and Toni Kroos. Arturo Vidal was quick to stab it in for the equaliser on the rebound after Kroos' free kick rattled the bar.
Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes admitted their Bundesliga title hopes were all but gone.
"I think now we have to start looking behind us. Although overall I think we deserved to win today."
Fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund, on 52 points, failed to close in after losing 1-0 to Mainz while Werder Bremen crushed Freiburg 4-0 to come within a point of Dortmund.
At the other end of the table Hertha Berlin slumped to a 1-0 defeat by VfB Stuttgart and now have only slim chances of staying up.

Champions League - Ribery appeal rejected, out of final
Reuters - Wed, 05 May 19:00:00 2010
Bayern Munich will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after UEFA upheld a three-match ban that will keep Franck Ribery out of the Champions League final.
Appealing to CAS in such circumstances is highly unusual but Bayern described the ruling as harsh and said Ribery was disappointed and sad to be missing the final against Internazionale.
The French playmaker, who has already served one match of the ban, was dismissed before halftime in the first leg of the semi-final against Olympique Lyon for a studs-up challenge on Lisandro Lopez.
"We will keep on fighting," Bayer chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.
"We're not happy with the decision here and we will take the decision to CAS in Lausanne.
"For him to miss the Champions League final for an offence of foul play is just too harsh," he added.
"Foul play should be punished with a one-match ban, those are the UEFA statutes but they have not followed them," added Rummenigge. "It's much too harsh."
Bayern said in a statement last week that UEFA had found Ribery, who attended the meeting but did not comment, guilty of assault.
"Given the outcome of the proceedings, Bayern Munich and the player have the right to lodge an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport," UEFA said.
A UEFA spokesman said appeals could be taken to CAS for bans lasting for two matches or more.
In practice, however, it is very unusual for matters concerning bans for incidents on the field to go to CAS, which usually deals with contractual and off-field disputes.
World soccer's governing body's statutes differ from UEFA's and only allow an appeal when a player is banned for four games or over, or a minimum three-month period.
Ribery and fellow international Sydney Govou were questioned in April as witnesses by police investigating a prostitution network.
French media have said the players were clients of a nightclub in the posh Champs-Elysees district of Paris which allegedly featured escort girls.
Ribery's lawyer has said her client was only questioned about his ties with the leader of an escort girl network and the player has made no comment about the affair.

Bayern keeper Butt set to join World Cup squad - Bild
Wed, 05 May 11:02:00 2010
Bayern Munich keeper Hans-Joerg Butt has been included in Germany's preliminary World Cup squad, a day after Rene Adler pulled out with an injury, Germany's Bild newspaper said on Wednesday, citing federation sources.
The German soccer federation could not be immediately reached for a comment.
The 35-year-old, whose last of three international appearances came in June 2003, will be the third choice behind Manuel Neuer and Tim Wiese, who are locked in battle for the starting spot.
Adler recently became the German number one after the suicide of Robert Enke but pulled out on Tuesday because of a planned rib operation that would not allow him to be fit in time for the tournament start on June 11th.
Germany coach Joachim Loew will announce his preliminary 30-man squad on Thursday. (Writing by Karolos Grohmann; Editing by John O'Brien; To query or comment on this story email [email protected]) |

One down, two to go as Bayern Munich chase treble
Fri, 07 May 13:23:00 2010
Bayern Munich could not have asked for a better setting to become Bundesliga champions for the 22nd time than the majestic Olympic stadium where they face relegated Hertha Berlin in the season finale on Saturday.
The Bavarians are three points clear of second-placed Schalke 04, who have a far inferior goal difference, and should complete the first leg of their quest for an unprecedented Germany treble of league, German Cup and Champions League titles.
It will also be a perfect dress rehearsal for Bayern's second act, the German Cup final against Werder Bremen, in the same stadium in Berlin only eight days later.
Bayern are also in the Champions League final, facing Italy's Inter Milan in Madrid on May 22.
"We must now keep the foot on the gas," Bayern captain Mark van Bommel told reporters on Thursday. "If you take it off it is difficult to reach that speed again."
The Dutch midfielder, who will become the first foreign Bayern captain to lift the Bundesliga trophy, said the players now had the "chance of a lifetime".
"Whoever does not get it now will never get it: we have the chance to make history and crown an outstanding season with three titles. This is a chance of a lifetime," Van Bommel said.
While Bayern will be lifting the championship's silver bowl into the Berlin sky, Hertha will be enduring opposite emotions.
The match against Bayern is always a highlight for the Berlin fans and this game was sold out half a year in advance.
This time however it will only mark the bitter and unexpected end of Hertha's Bundesliga presence as the capital will be without a top flight club next season.
"We will have the chance to thank some 75,000 fans in the game against Bayern for their fantastic support all season," said Hertha manager Michael Preetz. "They have been exceptional all season."
With Schalke having securing the second Champions League spot, Werder Bremen, in third place will be hoping to stay there and compete in the Champions League qualification.
Werder, on 60 points, take on bitter northern rivals Hamburg SV and a draw should be enough to secure third place ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who have 58 points and travel to Borussia Moenchengladbach.
One of Hanover 96, Nuremberg and VfL Bochum will join Hertha on the way down and another of them will have to battle it out in a relegation playoff with a second division team. |

Cool Audi A1 ideas at Wörthersee Tour 2010 – go Bayern! May 6, 2010 at 11:33 am By Danny Tan Filed Under Audi, Cars, International News
Audi is really going all out to make its baby A1 the coolest thing in town. We’ve already seen part 1 of “The Next Big Thing” mini seriesstarring Justin Timberlake, and here’s some ideas Audi is proposing forthe A1 – there’s a police car, airport taxi and a Bayern Munich car.The latter has in-form player Arjen Robben’s name all over it. Wait, didn’t Bayern just kick out Audi sponsored Man United of the ChampionsLeague, with a fine volley from Robben? Audi is a sponsor of the Munichclub, too!
The “Hot Rod” model boasts a matte-finish and low ride height withair suspension. Complementing this look are steel wheels withwhite-wall tyres. My favourite is the car with the No.1 racing livery, as seen in Geneva. It comes with a “competition kit” with the “legends interior plus”package. The Amalfi White paint finish and the original colors of theUrquattro (Begonia Red, Stone Gray and Gray Brown) are used both insideand outside. Unlike the rest of the concepts, this one is available asa factory option when sales start in Europe.
Audi has done some work in the cabin as well. Themed parts includeupper seat backs, the base of the centre console, door grips, instrument faces, floor carpets and rings on the air-con vents. Theseseven A1s are meant to show the customisation possibilities with add-onparts, special paint finishes and adhesive films. Audi calls them“motto vehicles”.
The cars will be paraded at the Wörthersee Tour 2010 in Austria (May12 – 15) alongside the new R8 GT, which makes its public debut there.Check out the gallery after the jump!

Bundesliga - Bayern clinch Bundesliga title
Reuters - Sat, 08 May 18:13:00 2010
Arjen Robbenscored twice to help Champions League finalists Bayern Munich claimtheir 22nd Bundesliga title with a 3-1 win at Hertha Berlin.
Ivica Olicgave Bayern the lead with a flashing shot from the edge of the box on20 minutes only for relegated Hertha to draw level courtesy of anAdrian Ramos finish from close range on 59 minutes.
Robben putthe game beyond the home side with two delightful finishes. He restoredBayern's lead by finishing off a fine sweeping move on 74 minutesbefore burying a third with a volley three minutes from time.
Bayern are on course to complete a unique treble.
Theyface Werder Bremen in the German Cup final on May 15 before flying toMadrid for the Champions League final against Inter Milan on May 22.Bayern finished on 70 points, five ahead of second-placed Schalke 04.
Dutchman Mark van Bommelbecame the club's first foreign captain to lift the Bundesliga trophy,in front of 75,000 spectators in the Olympic stadium, before he and histeam mates chased coach Louis van Gaal around the pitch to pour beer onhim.
Van Gaal, a renowned disciplinarian, tried to outsprint them, then gladly obliged and waved to the fans.
Ina contrast of emotions, Hertha players quickly left the pitch after awoeful season, with several of them set to leave and with fans in nomood to bid them farewell.
"I think people will remember theBayern team of the 2009/10 season," Van Gaal said. "It is wonderful andit is just great that this crowd remained in their seats for thecelebrations," he said of the Hertha fans.
"We had the bestattack, the best defence and I think we played the most attractivefootball this season and that is important for me. It is a good to winand we managed to stay in our rhythm. I will party until very latetonight."
Schalke and Werder Bremen join Bayern in the Champions League.
Schalke drew 0-0 at Mainz but had already secured the second spot and will compete in next season's Champions League.
Werder Bremen clinched the Champions League qualification spot after drawing 1-1 with Hamburg SV to finish third on 61 points.
Claudio Pizarroscored the only Werder goal and equalled Brazilian Giovane Elber's 133Bundesliga goals, making them the leading foreign goal scorers of alltime.
The result left a frustrated Hamburg in seventh place and outside the European spots. VfB Stuttgart, in sixth place, grabbed the last available place.
Bayern Leverkusen and Borussia Dormund will be Germany's other representatives in the Europa League.
Hosts VfL Bochum slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Hanover 96 and will join Hertha on the way down, as a few dozen angry Bochum fans tried to storm the pitch.
Arnold Bruggink put them ahead on nine minutes. Mike Hanke added a second on 23 minutes before Sergio Pinto completed the scoring a minute before the break.
Nurnberg beat Cologne thanks to Andreas Ottl'sgoal two minutes from time. They finished third from bottom and willplay a relegation play-off with the third-best second division team.

Bundesliga - Ribery '50-50' on leaving Bayern
Reuters - Sun, 16 May 12:29:00 2010
Franck Ribery has yet to make a decision on whether he will stay with Bayern Munich next season as the World Cup shop window looms.
"I still don't know if I will stay or leave. It's 50-50," the France midfielder told French TV channel TF1 on Sunday.
"I hope I will know by the end of the World Cup."
Ribery, heard by investigators as a witness in a sex scandal last month, was picked by France coach Raymond Domenech in his preliminary 30-man squad for South Africa.
He is expected to join Les Bleus in their training camp in the Alps on Tuesday after Domenech has cut the squad to 24 men on Monday. The squad will be trimmed to 23 by June 1.
Ribery will then be allowed to join Bayern for the Champions League final next Saturday in Madrid -- even if the Court of Arbitration for Sport upholds a three-match ban that would rule him out of the Internazionale clash.
"Even if he does not play the final, he will join his team mates for the game," Domenech told TF1 in a separate interview.
