Ferguson Rues Utd's Inability To Sign More Africans
ManchesterUnited manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitterde he would like the RedDevils to sign more African players, and rued their apparent inabilityto dop so.Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of Manchester United‘s record ofsigning African players and expressed frustration that they haven‘tbeen more successful in the market for stars from that continent.
"I wish we could sign more African players, but somehow we don'tseem to capture the ones we want to get," he was quoted as saying inThe Vanguard.
And he spoke specifically of Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari, revealing:
"Essien was with us at 16 years of age, and Muntari. But we couldn't get work permits for them.
"Then they both went back to Ghana, and then Essien went to Bastiaas a centre-half. He came to us as a centre-half way back then. AndLyon signed him as a centre-half and then made him a midfield player.
"Then Chelsea came for him and the price they were prepared to pay for him, we couldn't agree that kind of price."
Ferguson also discussed United’s notorious failure to land Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel.
"There was also the situation with John Obi Mikel, who we foughthard to have but who chose to go to Chelsea in the end. And there wasnothing we could do about that. So there's been cases where we havetried to get African players in the past and we've failed."
Ferguson added: "But we have a scout now in Ghana and we are trying to develop that part," he added.
"It’s not easy because it’s such a big continent. We also now have ascouting network in Angola and within a few weeks of that, theyrecommended Manucho. It is tough but we'll keep looking for the bestplayers from all over the world, including Africa".

News of the world says...
UNITED TO QUIT ON BERBATOV
By DAVID HARRISON
MANCHESTER UNITED are set to pull the plug on their bid to sign Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.
United have become aware that Spurs are willing to sell the Bulgarian to any club BUT themselves despite the European champions making a £20million bid for the player.
And the asking price could soar to £38m after United’s interest provoked a public spat between Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and Sir Alex Ferguson over alleged tapping-up of Berbatov, with Tottenham lodging a formal complaint with the Premier League.
That prompted the United boss to threaten to take legal action against Levy but the fall-out is now that Berbatov’s desired move to Old Trafford looks doomed.
Fergie has already begun to look at alternative strikers who could act as a foil to Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.
Among those he has watched have been Ajax hitman Klass-Jan Huntelaar and Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz — both also chased by Arsenal.
After ignoring overtures from Real Madrid this summer, Tevez will sign a four-year contract with United at some point over the next couple of months.
The Old Trafford club have agreed a £33m fee with Tevez’s owners, who are no longer MSI, for the Argentina forward.
Tevez’s advisor, Kia Joorabchian, explained: “Carlos Tevez’s economic rights are owned by a third party, based offshore — but this is not MSI.”
Tevez’s initial arrival at Old Trafford was dragged out almost until the start of last season as the Premier League satisfied themselves over a loan deal for the striker, even though it was almost identical to the one which saw Javier Mascherano leave West Ham for Liverpool.
But the 24-year-old created a hugely favourable impression at United, leaving Sir Alex in no doubt he wanted to sign the player on a permanent basis. |
