holger badstuber la, centrehalves / leftback bayern munchen, youth product bayern munchen
Senior career*
National team‡
Career
Badstuber is another product of the Bayern Munich youth academy and progressed through the youth setup and eventually played for the reserve team before signing professional terms in July 2009, along with team-mate Thomas Müller, having been an unused substitute in a number of first-team matches in the 2008–09 season. He made his debut in the first league game of the 2009–10 season, against Hoffenheim and has been a regular in defence. He scored his first senior goal, a powerful free kick, against Borussia Mönchengladbachon 4 December 2009. A centre back by training, he has been playing outof position at left back, a problematic position so that Philipp Lahmcan cover at right back, another problematic position. The youngsterhas impressed so far and, along with Lahm and Schweinsteiger, are thefew players to have started every league game since matchday 1.
On 4 February 2010 Bayern Munich announced that Badstuber had signed a new contract that would keep him at the club until 2014.[3][4]
International career
Shortly afterwards, he was called up to the Germany under-21 team for the first time, making his debut in a 3–1 defeat against Turkey. He was first called up to the senior team as part of the provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup.[5] He made his debut in a warm-up match against Hungary on May 29, coming on as a substitute for Arne Friedrich.[6] |

Germany's Podolski back in familiar hunting ground
Thu, 10 Jun 16:15:00 2010
Lukas Podolski promised on Thursday to put his poor club form behind him and return to the scoring exploits that helped Germany reach the World Cup semi-finals four years ago.
Then, the striker was the toast of the town after scoring three goals for the 2006 hosts and winning the young player of the tournament award.
But four years on, Podolski's form is shrouded in mystery.
Following his disappointing three-year tenure at Bayern Munich, he returned to his home club Cologne last year with high hopes but instead managed a meagre two goals.
He has never stopped scoring for Germany, however, with his 38 goals in 73 matches testament of his lethal skills.
"I want to pick up where I left off four years ago," Podolski told reporters after a 90-minute training session near Pretoria on Thursday. "I have had a very good preparation and I want to bring that to the matches."
The 25-year-old striker said he was not thinking about his bad season at Cologne and was only focused on scoring goals for Germany at the June 11-July 11 tournament in South Africa.
"The (Bundesliga) season is over and that is the end of it. In Cologne we played a more defensive game but I feel far more comfortable in the offensive game we play (with Germany) and where things are easier for me by having the best players of the country in the squad."
While some club coaches have hesitated giving the Poland-born left-footer a starting spot, Germany coach Joachim Loew has been more benevolent and Podolski has repaid that trust handsomely.
Loew himself predicted Podolski was ready to "explode" at this tournament and the striker paid back the compliment on Thursday, saying he hoped Loew, who has yet to sign a new contract, would stay on after the World Cup.
With more than a goal every two matches and with fellow striker Miroslav Klose in a slump of form for club and country, a lot will indeed rest on Podolski's pace when they take on their first Group D opponents Australia on Sunday.
"We know that the Australians are a very defensive team and it is up to us to find the gaps. We must come from the wings," he said, adding he himself would most likely start on the left wing.
"There is a certain pressure for this game because we must absolutely make sure we win that first match," he said.
Germany also take on Serbia and Ghana in their group. |

World Cup 2010 Player Ratings: Germany 4-0 Australia
Goal.com rates the players who featured in Germany's victory over Australia...
By Clark Whitney
Jun 13, 2010 10:32:00 PM
GERMANY
Neuer - 6.5: Confident and aggressive in his goal, even if he had very little to deal with. The Schalke #1 comfortably collected any cross that came close to him. Neuer's willingness to come off his line makes him more likely to make an error, but if he continues to judge the ball as well as he did today, Germany will have few problems at the back.
Lahm - 8: A captain's performance. The Bayern Munich fullback freely attacked up the right flank, and even turned into an auxiliary forward at times. His cross for Klose's goal was superb, fooling Schwarzer while also setting up his teammate with a clear opportunity on goal.![](static/image/smiley/default/pompom.gif)
Mertesacker - 6: "Mr. Clean" was rarely put under pressure, but made a mistake in the third minute as he failed to win a header. The Werder Bremen man was not once penalized for a foul, although he did manage to be ruled offside.
Friedrich - 6.5: Committed one foul late in the game, and that is all. Had very little to deal with, but defended calmly and effectively.
Badstuber - 6.5: Out of position on a couple of occasions, but was unpunished because the Australians failed to pick out Emerton, who had a terrible game. Had very little to do defensively, but played an intelligent ball through to Ozil to set up Cacau's goal.:cf:
Schweinsteiger - 7.5: Formed an classy tandem with Khedira in central midfield. The Bayern Munich man is still adjusting to his international role, and while his distribution was not as accurate as it is for club, it was still rather impressive. Schweinsteiger won the ball well, kept Australia out of his own half, and was Ozil's primary supplier.
Khedira - 7: Superb positional instincts from the Stuttgart midfielder, who on many occasions burst forward, confusing the Australian defence. He was never particularly dangerous, but Khedira's presence moving forward created space for his teammates while managing to avoid leaving the Germans susceptible to the counterattack.
Mueller - 8: Scored his first international goal with aplomb after wisely stopping his run. As usual, the Bayern Munich man's movement was a crucial part of his game. Mueller assisted Podolski's opener, and attacked both on the right wing and in the striker's role. His defensive contribution must also be noted: 11 minutes from full time, Mueller sprinted back to deny Chipperfield a free header on goal.![](static/image/smiley/default/pompom.gif)
Ozil - 8.5: His through balls are like daggers. Yes, he fluffed a pair of one-on-one situations, but the Werder Bremen playmaker assisted Cacau's goal and catalysed the opener, as well as several other attacking moves. Man of the match.![](static/image/smiley/default/pompom.gif)
Podolski - 8: Flawless finish for the opener, and excellent work attacking on the left flank. His creativity, an underrated aspect of his game, shined forth tonight as the Koeln man made several intelligent runs to set up goalscoring opportunities. Earned an assist for Mueller's goal, and should have had another after setting up Klose.![](static/image/smiley/default/pompom.gif)
Klose - 7: Missed three sitters, but kept his composure and did well to head in the opener. His movement was the best it has been in months, and the veteran did very well to link with his attacking colleagues, namely Ozil. Was eventually substituted after tiring midway through the second half.
Substitutes
Cacau - 7: Came on for Klose and scored with his first touch. Because most of his time on the pitch was during what could be considered a scrimmage, it's hard to assess the Stuttgart man's time on the pitch.
Gomez - n/a Came on at a time when the game was already decided and Germany were hardly interested in attacking.
Marin - n/a
AUSTRALIA
Schwarzer – 6: Had little chance to save the first, third, and fourth goals, but misjudged Lahm's cross for the second, and was duly punished. Did well to keep on his feet to deny Ozil, and made a string of first class saves in the second half.
Wilkshire – 5.5: The better of the two fullbacks when Australia had the ball, Wilkshire put in more crosses than any of his teammates and passed quite well, but was less stable in defence. The Dynamo Moscow man played Mueller onside in the play leading up to Podolski's opener.
Moore – 3: A dismal performance from the veteran defender, who looked like a deer in the headlights as the German attackers rushed his way. Time and time again, he was beaten. Flop of the match.
Neill – 3.5: Played Ozil onside in the first half, but recovered to brilliantly deny the Germany playmaker with a goal line clearance. Like Moore, however, he often appeared clueless when deciding whom to mark as the Germans came forward.
Chipperfield – 5.5: The less attack-minded but more defensively stable of Australia's fullbacks. Unlike his fellow defenders, Chipperfield was not directly responsible for any of the German goals. He nearly ghosted in to head home a cross late in the game, but his plans were foiled by Mueller.
Valeri – 6.5: Ran and ran and ran. The former Inter Milan youth player ran nearly 13km, more than any player on the pitch, and completed a team-high 55 passes. He could have done better in defence, however, and was beaten by Ozil in the play leading up to Germany's fourth goal.
Grella – 4: A soft spot in defensive midfield, Grella allowed Klose to burst past him early in the game and was substituted at halftime. Not an impressive performance.
Emerton – 4.5: Received many passes, then did nothing of value, save for one decent cross in the first half.
Cahill – 4: Won an important header that nearly created a goal early in the game, but was anonymous until he was sent off for a terrible foul on Schweinsteiger. Many will cite the fact that he tried to pull out of the challenge, but Cahill still came in late and hit the Germany midfielder above the ankle.
Culina – 5.5: More active than his attacking colleagues, and had a chance to head in the equalizer early on, but missed over the bar. Still, the former PSV man had a rather disappointing game.
Garcia – 4.5: Struck a lonely figure up front. Had nearly no service whatsoever, and when he finally did receive the ball, he had nobody to pass to. Was eventually substituted midway through the second half.
Substitutes
Holman – 6: Came on at the half in place of Grella, and nearly pulled a goal back within seven minutes. Didn't threaten goal after his initial effort, but worked hard and was more accurate in his passing than any of his attacking teammates.
Rukavytsya – 4: Substituted on for Garcia in the 64th minute, but struggled to make an impact, and was rather sloppy with the ball. Took one shot on goal, but it never had a chance of beating Neuer.
Jedinak – n/a: Came in after the game was already decided. |
