Gedong Cipta Signs MOU With Indonesia Firm On Parts Supply To Proton
By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
JAKARTA, March 14 (Bernama) -- Gedong Cipta (M) Sdn Bhd and Indonesian firm, PT Cipta Saksama Indonesia (CSI), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the supply of motor vehicle parts for Proton cars.
Under the MOU, Gedong Cipta would act as agent for the import of CSI's thermostat pipes and exhaust system for use in Proton cars.
Gedong Cipta chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Hussain, said this was the first time an Indonesian company would supply the parts to Proton.
" The MOU allows them to appoint us as the agent to supply and market their products in Malaysia, mainly to Proton because Proton is the main buyer of exhaust parts for the cars, " he said.
He said the first shipment of 600 thermostat pipes from CSI arrived last week and would be gradually increased to 12,000 units per month within the next few months.
Abdul Aziz said in the long term, Gedong Cipta planned to form a joint venture with CSI to set up its own factory in Malaysia to produce car parts.
CSI president director, Leo Kosasih, said the company was expected to meet the monthly supply of the thermostat pipes to Proton by May through mass production.
Thermostat pipe connects the car engine and the radiator, as part of the engine cooling system.
Kosasih said the CSI plant in Cakung, East Jakarta would be able to produce 500,000 thermostat pipes annually.
" It is also able to produce 60,000 exhaust systems per month.
" The two companies have, however, not finalised the number of exhaust systems to be produced for Proton, " said Kosasih.
CSI, which has been in business for 40 years, produces thermostat pipes and exhaust systems for other car plants including Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi Isuzu and Daihatsu.

Better Q4 for Proton
Thursday May 26, 2011
SHAH ALAM : Proton Holdings Bhd posted a higher net profit of RM61.6mil for the fourth quarter ended March 31 compared with a net profit of RM2.64mil in the previous corresponding quarter.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, the company attributed the positive results to higher vehicle sales for Proton and Lotus Group International Ltd.
Proton vehicle sales for the fourth quarter was driven by demand for its Persona, Saga, Exora and Inspira models.
However, for its full financial year ended March 31 (FY2011), Proton's net profit dropped by 30.5% year-on-year to RM152mil against a net profit of RM218.9mil previously.
Revenue for FY2011 grew to RM8.98bil compared with RM8.2bil in the previous year.
Proton attributed the decline in profit to higher losses incurred by Lotus Group due to branding and restructuring costs.
Proton also reported a lower cash position of RM1.2bil compared with RM1.6bil in the previous year.
Proton attributed the decline in profit to higher losses incurred by Lotus Group due to branding and restructuring costs.
Proton also reported a lower cash position of RM1.2bil compared with RM1.6bil in the previous year.
“ There are early signs that the Lotus business transformation exercise is on track, and a new Lotus car should be in the market in 2013, ” Proton chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh told a briefing yesterday.
Group managing director Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said Proton's domestic vehicle sales rose 9.4% to 162,950 units in FY2011 compared with 148,969 units in the previous year.
He said the group's capital expenditure (capex) was expected to increase to about RM1.6bil this year from RM900mil in 2010.
“ About half of the capex is allocated for Lotus and the other half for Proton. The capex will be for activities including new facilities, technology and product development. ”
He said a replacement for Proton's Campro engine might be available in 2015. A Persona model replacement is slated for March 2012.
Syed Zainal said the group was also in the final stages of discussions with platform, component and powertrain partners for a global small car project a joint venture between Proton and Lotus.
“ The project will take 20 to 24 months. We are in the final stages of finalising the commercial terms and technical collaborations. ”
