Mubarak quits, Egypt military chief hails crowd

CAIRO - It was the end of an era in Arab politics - Egypt's Hosni Mubarak resigned as President and handed control to the military on Friday, bowing out after a historic 18-day wave of pro-democracy demonstrations by hundreds of thousands.

The announcement, delivered by Vice-President Omar Suleiman on national television just after nightfall in Cairo, set off a frenzy of celebrations, with protesters shouting "Egypt is free!"

Huge cheers and whistles erupted in central Tahrir Square, as well as chants of "Allahu-akbar".

A grim-looking Mr Suleiman said in his address: "In these grave circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave his position as president of the republic. He has mandated the Armed Forces Supreme Council to run the state."

Mr Abdel-Rahman Samir, one of the youth organisers of the protests, said the protest movement would now open negotiations with the military over democratic reform, but vowed protests would continue to ensure change is carried out.

"We still don't have any guarantees yet - if we end the whole situation now it's like we haven't done anything," he said. "So we need to keep sitting in Tahrir until we get all our demands."

A ruling party official said earlier that Mr Mubarak and his family had left Cairo for the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where there is a presidential residence.

The 82-year-old leader's downfall after unprecedented mass protests was a momentous victory for people power and was sure to rock autocrats throughout the Arab world and beyond.

Egypt's powerful military gave guarantees earlier on Friday that promised democratic reforms would be carried out but angry protesters intensified the uprising against Mr Mubarak.

About 2,000 peeled off from Tahrir Square and gathered outside the presidential palace for the first time calling for him to resign immediately, and the army did not try to remove them.

Other protesters fanned out to the state television tower, another monument to Mr Mubarak's 30-year-old authoritarian rule, demanding that broadcasters tell the truth about the revolt.

It was the biggest day of protests yet in the upheaval that began on Jan 25, growing from youth activists working on the Internet into a mass movement that tapped into widespread discontent with Mr Mubarak's authoritarian lock on power, corruption, economic woes and widespread disparities between rich and poor.

Mr Mubarak was thrust into office when militants gunned down his predecessor Anwar Sadat at a military parade in 1981.

The former air-force general, who as President became the commander of the largest military force in the Arab world, was the nation's longest-serving ruler in more than 150 years.

Mr Mubarak also controlled a government that was the linchpin of United States policy in the Middle East for three decades.

He kept peace with Israel, with which Egypt had formal peace for only two years when he took office, supported US counterterrorism efforts, backed Iranian sanctions over its nuclear program and helped broker Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. Agencies

Hosni Mubarak resigns as president

Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, has resigned from his post, handing over power to the armed forces.

Omar Suleiman, the vice-president, announced in a televised address that the president was "waiving" his office, and had handed over authority to the Supreme Council of the armed forces.

Suleiman's short statement was received with a roar of approval and by celebratory chanting and flag-waving from a crowd of hundreds of thousands in Cairo's Tahrir Square, as well by pro-democracy campaigners who attended protests across the country on Friday.

The crowd in Tahrir chanted "We have brought down the regime",  while many were seen crying, cheering and embracing one another.

Mohamed ElBaradei, an opposition leader, hailed the moment as being the "greatest day of my life", in comments to the Associated Press news agency.

"The country has been liberated after decades of repression,'' he said.

"Tonight, after all of these weeks of frustration, of violence, of intimidation ... today the people of Egypt undoubtedly [feel they] have been heard, not only by the president, but by people all around the world," our correspondent at Tahrir Square reported, following the announcement.

"The sense of euphoria is simply indescribable," our correspondent at Mubarak's Heliopolis presidential palace, where at least ten thousand pro-democracy activists had gathered, said.

"I have waited, I have worked all my adult life to see the power of the people come to the fore and show itself. I am speechless." Dina Magdi, a pro-democracy campaigner in Tahrir Square told Al Jazeera.

"The moment is not only about Mubarak stepping down, it is also about people's power to bring about the change that no-one ... thought possible."

In Alexandria, Egypt's second city, our correspondent described an "explosion of emotion". He said that hundreds of thousands were celebrating in the streets.

Pro-democracy activists in the Egyptian capital and elsewhere had earlier marched on presidential palaces, state television buildings and other government installations on Friday, the 18th consecutive day of protests.

Egyptians Celebrate Mubarak's Resignation

Egypt has erupted into a cacophony of celebration on the news that president Hosni Mubarak has bowed to demands that he resign after 18 days of furious protests.

The brief announcement was made by vice president Omar Suleiman on national television after another day of massive protests which saw millions take to Cairo's Tahrir Square and beyond.

"Citizens, during these very difficult circumstances that Egypt is going through, president Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as the president of the republic and has entrusted the High Council of the Armed Forces to carry out the dealing of the country," he said.

There was jubilation on the streets of Cairo seconds after the news broke, while many simply sobbed for joy.

"Nightmare over!" said tailor Saad el Din Ahmed, 65.

"Now we have our freedom and can breathe and demand our rights," said Mostafa Kamal, a 33-year-old salesman.

"In Mubarak's era, we never saw a good day. Hopefully now we will see better times."

The president himself had left his palace in Cairo by helicopter and flown to the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh as thousands of protesters stood outside the building chanting for him to go, watched over by the Republican Guard who took no action to disperse them.

Mr Mubarak is the second Arab leader to be overthrown by a popular uprising in a month, following Tunisia's Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.

Egyptian vice president Omar Suleiman says a military council will run the affairs of the most populous Arab nation, with a free and fair presidential election promised for September.

There was a note of caution in the background, however, over how far the military under field marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Mr Mubarak's veteran defence minister, is ready to permit a democracy, especially since the hitherto banned Islamist Muslim Brotherhood is one of the best-organised forces.

US officials familiar with the US-sponsored Egyptian military say field marshal Tantawi, 75, has long seemed resistant to change.

In a statement, the military council said it would take measures for an interim phase and hoped to realise people's hopes.

Striking the even-handed note the military has maintained throughout the crisis, it praised Mr Mubarak for resigning "in the interests of the nation" and the "martyrs" who died protesting.

It is not clear whether Mr Suleiman will remain as civilian head of the army-led government.

Protests bring down Egypt's Mubarak
Fireworks burst over Tahrir Square and Egypt exploded with joy and tears of relief after pro-democracy protesters brought down President Hosni Mubarak with a momentous march on his palaces and state TV.

Mubarak, who until the end seemed unable to grasp the depth of resentment over his three decades of authoritarian rule, finally resigned Friday and handed power to the military.

In an address around 9am NZ time, United States President Barack Obama said "Egypt will never be the same".

He said the people of Egypt had spoken and their voice had been heard. "It's not the end. It's the beginning for Egypt."

Other leaders around the world have echoed Obama's sentiments.

"The people ousted the regime," rang out chants from crowds of hundreds of thousands massed in Cairo's central Tahrir Square and outside Mubarak's main palace several miles away in a northern district of the capital.

The crowds in Cairo, the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and other cities around the country erupted into a pandemonium of cheers and waving flags. They danced, hugged and raised their hands in prayer after Vice President Omar Suleiman made the announcement on national TV just after nightfall. Some fell to kiss the ground, and others chanted, "Goodbye, goodbye."

"Finally we are free," said Safwan Abou Stat, a 60-year-old protester. "From now on anyone who is going to rule will know that these people are great."

Even in Israel, which had watched the Egyptian protesters' uprising against Mubarak with concern, a former Cabinet minister said Mubarak did the right thing. "The street won. There was nothing that could be done. It's good that he did what he did," former Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who knew Mubarak well, told Israel TV's Channel 10. Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel, and there are fears the 1979 accord could now be challenged.

Thousands from around the capital converged on the celebrating crowd in Tahrir, or Liberation, Square, the epicenter of the stunning protest movement that was started by a small core of secular, liberal youth activists on the Internet and turned into the biggest popular uprising in the Arab world.

Moments after Egypt's Vice President Omar Suleiman made the announcement of Mubarak's resignation, fireworks lit up the sky over Beirut. Celebratory gunfire rang out in the Shiite-dominated areas in south Lebanon and in southern Beirut.

The protests have already echoed around the Middle East, with several of the region's autocratic rulers making pre-emptive gestures of democratic reform to avert their own protest movements. The lesson many took: If it could happen in three weeks in Egypt, where Mubarak's lock on power had appeared unshakable, it could happen anywhere.
