Why Liverpool have better chance than Chelsea of convincing Guardiola about England move

Those who observe him closely are adamant: Pep Guardiola will step away from the game once his time is up at Barcelona.

But if the departing coach is tempted by a move to the Premier League, it is Liverpool, not Chelsea, which will have the greater chance of convincing him to cut short any sabbatical.

Roman Abramovich will throw the bank at Guardiola to persuade him to move to London after Friday's Copa del Rey final. Huge wages, a massive transfer budget and inheriting the new European champions - it has to be an attractive proposition.

But it is struggling Liverpool which is the better fit for the Spaniard.

At Anfield, Guardiola will instantly recognise the youth structure put in place by former Barcelona coaches Rodolfo Borrell and Jose Segura.

Both men were tempted to Merseyside by Rafa Benitez to overhaul Liverpool's development system and the club is now reaping the rewards with the likes of Martin Kelly, Jack Robinson and Jon Flanagan all looking natural Premier League players.

For all the silverware he brought to the Nou Camp, Guardiola's proudest achievement at Barca was the number of players from the La Masia academy he introduced to the first team. The Barca coach always made a point of preferring a homespun player to an outside signing and what Liverpool have put in place will excite him.

Liverpool can also count on Guardiola's brother for a glowing reference. Pere Guardiola is the agent of Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan has made it clear how much he appreciates the support the club gave him during last season's Patrice Evra controversy.

No matter the rights and wrongs of the issue (and the people who lost their jobs because of it), Liverpool's controversial stand will have gained them a great ally in Pere Guardiola should they get serious about going for his brother.

The argument goes that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are now pulling back on their spending after the sacking of Dalglish and his £120 million transfer spend.

But FSG is a considered speculator and they'll know making Guardiola Liverpool manager will give them a huge opportunity to capture the much sought after - and lucrative - US-Latino market. All the major American sports are actively exploring how to tap into this fast growing part of the country's population.

FSG are making a conscious effort to build Liverpool's profile across the USA., which was affirmed by chairman Tom Werner's recent comments about Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey. The Reds, with an eye on the Hispanic demographic, already have a deal in place for Pachuca striker Marco Bueno and are also looking at his teammate Hector Herrera.

If it gets down to money, it's unlikely FSG will hesitate meeting Guardiola's price given his profile in the US's Latin community.

Even the idea of working for owners based on the other side of the world will appeal to Guardiola.

His final days at Barcelona are proving tense, as disagreements with both president Sandro Rosell and sports director Andoni Zubizarreta over transfer policy and team selection have now made it to the local press. The opportunity to work for a 'hands off' board at Liverpool, even in contrast to Abramovich and Chelsea, is sure to work in FSG's favour.

For now, it appears Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez and Fabio Capello are the most likely candidates for the Liverpool job.

But as some former Reds stars have been pushing behind the scenes, FSG should make a pitch to Guardiola. They may be pleasantly surprised by his response.

Players, fans heap pressure on Liverpool for Benitez return

There is a growing clamour at Liverpool for Rafa Benitez to return.

The Mirror says momentum is building behind Benitez.

The Madrileno retains the backing of some senior players in the dressing room, including Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger and Lucas.

They were disappointed when he left the club two years ago and would like to see him return.

FSG chief John W Henry cannot ignore the Kop and he knows how potent they are after witnessing how they effectively forced his hand over Roy Hodgson in January 2011.

The Fenway Sports Group supremo will know they could also turn against a rival candidate like Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez.

Louis van Gaal in line for a senior managerial position at Liverpool

Louis van Gaal is in line for a senior managerial role at Liverpool. The Dutchman was linked with a move to Anfield in the wake of Damien Comolli's dismissal as director of football in April. However, while it has since been decided to change the management structure at Liverpool, Van Gaal has remained under consideration for a revised role and is the leading contender to become the club's first sporting director.

He is understood to be keen on a move to Merseyside and his appointment could herald the arrival of several new faces at Anfield, including the successor to Kenny Dalglish. The club are also set to name Billy Hogan, currently the managing director of Fenway Sports Group, as the their new commercial director. FSG are conducting an extensive search for a manager since sacking Dalglish last week and their ideal criteria of a young coach with title-winning experience would fit alongside a sporting director of Van Gaal's experience and expertise. That plan led to approaches for Jürgen Klopp of Borussia Dortmund and Ajax's Frank de Boer, both of whom declined the opportunity to meet John W Henry and Tom Werner, Liverpool's principal owner and chairman respectively, and to interest in the former Porto and Chelsea manager, André Villas‑Boas.

Villas-Boas and Roberto Martínez of Wigan Athletic are among several candidates for the manager's post and whoever is chosen will, it seems, have to accept working with Van Gaal, who has won league titles with Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich, plus the Champions League with Ajax in 1995.

The 60-year-old was due to return to Ajax in a director's capacity this year until a legal challenge from long-time adversary Johann Cruyff derailed the move. His last managerial role was at Bayern, who he led to the Bundesliga title and the Champions League final in 2010 before being sacked in April 2011.

Van Gaal's work with Ajax and Barcelona undoubtedly appeals to Liverpool's owners as they conduct an overhaul at Anfield and look to imprint a playing philosophy throughout every level of the club. That strengthens his claims for the proposed sporting director role, although Van Gaal has not yet called time on his managerial career and was linked with PSV Eindhoven before their recent appointment of Dick Advocaat.

FSG's method of replacing Dalglish has attracted criticism due to the number of rejections it has prompted. Brendan Rodgers was the first to decline the offer of an interview but it is understood the Swansea City manager would not reject an offer of the job if it was forthcoming.

Henry and Werner have still to reach a decision on a new stadium but, in an indication they favour a redeveloped Anfield over a new build on Stanley Park, the club's managing director, Ian Ayre, has revealed that progress has been made with local residents regarding the existing stadium. The "right to light" is one of the major obstacles in the way of a redeveloped Anfield, as the necessity to build upwards would have an impact on nearby housing. That has been the focus of protracted negotiations between the club and residents in recent months, with the possibility that the "right to light" can be sold offering Liverpool hope of staying at their historic home.

Ayre said: "People assume that because we haven't made a major announcement, or can show any spade in the ground, that nothing has gone on and no progress has been made. There is progress. The most important thing for us, especially under this owner, has been about certainty on the stadium. We are not going to make comments that we're doing something until we've got certainty. And that certainty quite often is in other people's hands.

"In the case of staying at Anfield that certainty is with residents in and around that area that we would need to convince. We're having some great dialogue with them. When we have that certainty we will make the announcement and move on it. It's all right for people to say Liverpool is a big football club – 60,000 seats, why don't you just go and get on with it? But look at the economics of that, of a £300m build for 15,000 new seats. It's pretty hard to make that stack up. The work is going on and a decision will be announced when we've got certainty."

Ayre has not ruled out a new development on Stanley Park, for which naming rights would have to be sold. "We are fairly well down the line with a couple of major brands who have shown significant rights in naming rights for a new stadium.

No contact with Capello or Deschamps

Liverpool have had no contact with either Fabio Capello or Didier Deschamps, according to ESPN sources on Tuesday lunchtime.

Speculation had been growing that Capello was wanted by Fenway Sports Group as the successor to Dalglish, with contacts close to the former England coach claiming he had been approached.

However, ESPN has been told that there has been no official contact with Capello and that there has also been no approach for Marseille boss Didier Deschamps.

Roberto Martinez has been given permission to speak to Liverpool by his club Wigan, while Brendan Rodgers of Swansea City turned down the chance to meet with Anfield representatives. Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp and Ajax manager Frank de Boer have been appraoched but will stay with their current clubs.

Andre Villas-Boas has also held meetings with Liverpool and is on the list of managers due speak to have a second interview, and it is expected that they will be joined by at least one other candidate. FSG is yet to meet any prospective new manager, with managing director Ian Ayre conducting the initial stages of the recruitment process.

A source told ESPN: "The long list of candidates is now narrowing down to a workable number who are likely to go to Boston, although there is of course a chance that the owners will come over here to see the candidates."

It was reported that an agent representing Liverpool did approach Capello before the Champions League final to enquire as to his interest in the position, and that he had since held preliminary talks, at which he expressed a desire to be considered.

Liverpool fan group Spirit of Shankly, which led the protests against former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, has written to FSG to express its concern over the way the club is being run.

"It may be that yourselves and the board of Liverpool Football Club have a vision you are working towards," SOS's letter read. "It may be that you have implemented a strategy to deliver that vision and decisions are being made to work towards this.

"However, from the outside, where supporters find themselves once again, it looks like a football club in disarray. Confusion and chaos seems to reign and no one is coming out of this with much credit, particularly the football club's image and brand.

"We need clear and pro-active communication, a confident message about the club's plans that breeds confidence amongst supporters that we are moving in the right direction. Instead, we have silence and a lack of information or understanding on decisions being made.

"As supporters we have seen all too clearly what a lack of communication from absentee owners leads to. Ultimately supporters remain in the dark once again about the plans for this football club moving forward.

"We find ourselves experiencing deja vu, where boardroom decisions lead to more questions than they answer. We ask that you speak with supporters - engage with a true representative cross section of supporters and work with supporters to provide solutions to our current problems."

Liverpool to appoint Brendan Rodgers as new manager on three-year deal

The Northern Irishman is set to replace Kenny Dalglish at Anfield after the Reds' owners agreed a compensation package with Swansea City
.

Brendan Rodgers is on the verge of becoming the new manager of Liverpool on a three-year deal.

The Swansea boss held talks with the Liverpool owners on Wednesday afternoon and is likely to be installed in the next 24 hours.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the Reds’ American owners, will pay around £5 million in compensation to Swansea under the terms of the three-and-a-half year contract the Northern Irishman signed with the Welsh club in February.

Rodgers emerged as the leading candidate to replace Kenny Dalglish after Wigan boss Roberto Martinez ruled himself out of contention on Tuesday, as Goal.com exclusively revealed earlier today.

Rodgers, 39, has agreed to work under FSG’s proposed management structure unlike Martinez, who was put off by the plans to divide the director of football role in to three separate positions.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins confirmed in a statement on the club's website on Wednesday evening that the former Watford and Reading boss said he wanted to take the Liverpool job having initially spurned an approach from the Merseyside club two weeks ago.

At that stage, he wanted to avoid appearing disloyal to Swansea while the Reds had a long list of candidates, but it became apparent this week that Rodgers was a genuine front runner to replace Kenny Dalglish, who was sacked on May 16.

Jenkins said: "I was contacted by Liverpool last night and they expressed their wish to speak to Brendan regarding their vacancy.

"I had a discussion with Brendan to talk about their interest and his views on whether he wanted to speak to Liverpool.

"He expressed his wish with me to do that and he has spoken to Liverpool today.

"Following on from discussions with Liverpool's owners, Brendan has informed us that he would like to take up their offer to manage Liverpool.

"At the moment we are currently in talks with the owners to agree compensation. We are trying to finalise that within the next 24 hours.

"Although we are very disappointed to lose such a talented, young British manager, we didn't wish to stand in his way. We shall now refocus and quickly start the process of finding his replacement to continue the great work Brendan has carried out at this football club."

FSG went in search of a young, dynamic manager who is capable of introducing a footballing ethos which runs through all levels at the club.

Principle owner John W Henry remains determined to implement a tiered management structure and Rodgers will work alongside three men taking on the duties performed by former director of football Damien Comolli.

The Reds’ groundbreaking plan is to employ one executive to oversee statistics, another whose role will be to conduct negotiations and a third ‘football man’ with contacts within the game.

Rodgers, Martinez and former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas were the leading contenders at the start of the process while the likes of Frank De Boer and Jurgen Klopp were quick to dismiss the notion of moving to Anfield.

Rodgers caught the eye last season as he guided Swansea to an 11th place finish in their debut season in the Premier League, earning praise from rival fans and managers for his commitment to possession-based football.

He will be tasked with improving upon Liverpool's disappointing 8th-placed finish under Dalgish this season, with the Merseyside outfit picking up only five league wins after the turn of the year.
