Six Flying Dragons - Ep. 20
The historical background to help understand Ep. 20
* In fact, it was in summer 1388.
- The second conquest of the Liadong peninsula (1388) happened inApril and May 1388 of the lunar calendar, which was approximately in June and July of the solar calendar.
- In other words, in snowy weather of December, the SFD production team had to shoot the historical event that happened in summer rainy season.
- It has caused an uproar before the broadcast of episode 20, because General Yi Seong-Gye’s 4 reasons not to go to war could become ridiculous in the winter.
- However, after watching so many actors suffering from the cold rain and snow, many TV viewers seem to give up criticizing about it. Even some of them took their hat off to the wornout staff.
- They are shooting Ep. 21~22 right now for the next week’s broadcast.

jangan salahkan Gen Lee...
ada sebb dia buat mcm tu...
Dia takut dia akan jd raja yg lain2. Pentingkan keluarga masing2. Dlm masa yg sama, dia sayangkan keluarga dia
Part plg sedih masa MH dan sorang tentera lagi x nk bunuh askar yg lain
Abang BW dlm tawanan kt istana. Takut raja yg bangang tu bunuh je bila LS akhirnya pilih tuk berundur & x nak seberang sungai. |

Six Flying Dragons - Ep. 20
The historical background to help understand Ep. 20
* Choi Young (최영, 崔瑩, 1316~1388) - Probably, Choi Young is the most famous Korean general in the world thanks to Actor Lee Min-Ho who played the younger version of the general in Korean drama “Faith (신의, 2012)”. I’ve never watched the drama, but I think it will help many non-Koreans easily understand the atmosphere of Goryeo court under the reign of King Gongmin and his wife Princess Noguk.
- More details about General Choi Young, check out wikipedia.
- The conquest of the Liaodong peninsula was every Goryeo people’s longtime dream. General Choi Young was not an exception. Even Jung Do-Jeon tried to do the same thing after founding Joseon. The Liaodong peninsula was the lost land of their glorious ancestors, Goguryeo (고구려, 高句麗) kingdom which successfully repelled the invasions of Sui & Tang Dynasty of China in the early 7th century.
- Most of all, what made General Choi Young push ahead with the reckless expedition was that General Yi Seong-Gye already succeeded to conquer it in 1370. But General Yi had to retreat because the provisions had run out.
- During the talks in Dodang, Jung Mong-Joo blamed Choi Young for killing Minister Yi Ja-Song (이자송, 李子松). It is historically true. As Minister Yi visited Choi Young’s house to stop the expedition, the raged general framed him as an ally of the dead traitor Yim Gyeom-Mi (= Gil Tae-Mi) and beat him to death. It shows how enthusiastic the general was.
- It was also true that the general killed 21 Ming Chinese soldiers who were building a military base in the Liaodong peninsula (철령위, 鐵嶺衛) shortly before the expedition.
- Why didn’t he make the conquest for himself? In the drama, it looks like he was so selfish to make Yi Seong-Gye’s armies suffer while he was staying in the safer place, but there was a story behind that. Choi Young planned to lead the expedition for himself, but King U was afraid of his absence because his father, King Gongmin, was assassinated while Choi Young went to Jeju island to suppress a rebellion. King U desperately asked the general not to leave him alone, which made the general’s determination weaken. So, Choi Young decided to stay with the king at the last moment, which changed the history forever.

Six Flying Dragons - Ep. 20
The historical background to help understand Ep. 20
- Tai Gong Wang is an ancient Chinese military strategist who achieved the first ever Dynastic Revolution in the history.
- He helped King Wen and King Wu of Zhou Dynasty (1050–771 BC) overthrow the Shang dynasty (1600~1046 BC) of China.
- His real name was Lü Shang (여상, 呂尚) or Jiang Shang (강상, 姜尚).
- However, in Korea, he is well known as Gang Tae Gong (강태공 姜太公) which became a byword for “an angler” because he spent most of his life in fishing before joining the dynastic revolution.
- He was famous for using a barbless hook or even no hook at all.
* The meaning of “Nation (국가, 國家)” Hanja (Chinese characters) is ideograms. If you decipher the term “Nation (國家, 국가, Guk-Ga)”, Guk (國) means “Protect people inside the fence with spears” and Ga (家) means “the place where pigs are raised under the roof.” In Confucian ideology, a nation is like a family. King is a father and people are his children. As a father protects his children inside his house with his spear, a king should protect his people inside his territory with military power. Scholars and government officials are elder brothers who should take care of their younger siblings. All of them are related not by blood but by humanity (인, 仁) and justice (의, 義). Then, what is the qualifications for a king? A king should be a father, not only to his own family, but also to the entire people of the nation. When Yi Seong-Gye decided to expand his family fence, he became a father to his 50,000 soldiers. When he determined not to cross the Yalu river at the risk of his own family’s life in order to save soldiers, he finally got the qualifications for a king. “The first king of Joseon Dynasty – King Taejo, Yi Seong-Gye”
