i went  to KL last weekend to attend a marriage ceremony.. i had spent about RM 200 excluded meals & shopping. Actually i'm from Penang and this is my 2nd times to KL with family. the journey takes about 5 hours from Penang-KL. I went there with my three kids..what a chaos. been in a car for 5 hours with 3 kids (5 yrs-15 months) is not as easy as you might think. i still fell the pain at my back.. but i hope i had more time there.. i went to uptown (night market) area Damansara (i think).. i was excited to see lots of things that sold there that i can't find in penang..especially the clothes. there's lot of new design that u cannot find in penang (unfortunately..sigh!!).. but with the 3 kids around kindda hard for me to window shopping.. i think i have to wait for my children to grow up a bit.. then i can revisited KL again..hopefully..

omit means - you just delete it - leave it out -
don't include it

* no worries - i just use it to make it simple
but perhaps i just should say -  delete that word
or - leave out that word - replace with .......
or just leave it out -

Hopefully we can differentiate between `reach and arrive'

Regarding the sentence:

`We hoped to reach the island before nightfall so that Maxx can cook dinner for us', I think it is not suitable because I'm not an excellent cook, I'm just a great cook of maggi mee

How about prevent and refrain:

1. Taman Kosas MP was prevented from entering the Parliament.

2.  Taman Kosas MP was refrained from entering the Parliament.

which is the correct one

Hopefully we can differentiate between `reach and arrive'

you can check again

First, "reach" is transitive, and "arrive" is not. "Reach" can mean "arrive in/at":

reach
- to arrive at a place, especially after spending a long time or a lot of effort travelling:

examples:

We won't reach Miami till five or six o'clock.
They finally reached the coast after five weeks sailing.
News of his accident had only just reached us.

But it also has meanings of its own, which don't mean "arrive", but "be able to touch",
for example, or when you try to phone someone.

arrive
-  must have a preposition between it and the object -
- the prepositions that are commonly used with "arrive" are AT and IN

Regarding the sentence:

`We hoped to reach the island before nightfall so that Maxx can cook dinner for us', I think it is not suitable because I'm not an excellent cook, I'm just a great cook of maggi mee

i don't need an excellent cook -
furthermore it's not easy to find a great cook for maggi mee -  lol -
so i still think the sentence is quite suitable -

How about prevent and refrain:

prevent: to stop something from happening, or stop someone from doing something

examples :

1 - His back injury may prevent him from playing in tomorrow's game.

2 - We were prevented from entering the site.

refrain : to not do something that you want to do

example :

Please refrain from smoking in this area -

1. Taman Kosas MP was prevented from entering the Parliament.

2.  Taman Kosas MP was refrained from entering the Parliament.

which is the correct one

Taman Kosas MP was prevented from entering the Parliament.

one question teacher...

if refrain means `to not do something that you want to do', so in that case, Taman Kosas MP actually wanted to enter the Parliament House but he was not allowed to do so due to some  reasons.

How about:
His back injury may refrain him from playing in tomorrow's game. In this case, Gerrard really wanted to play for Liverpool but he can't do so due to his injury during the game with Hull City.

Need views from you and everyone here.

Hi Good Morning...

I would like to give my views, if I may:

Refrain (to not do something that you want to do) is a verb that means to hold oneself back or to keep from doing or saying something ie.  Please refrain from smoking.  (We dont say please refrain yourself from smoking) or Please refrain from swearing

Prevent (to stop from happening) is a verb that means to stop or hinder something from happening or to keep someone from doing something or not allowing to happen especially by advance planning or action. ie The injury prevented him from winning. or The surest way to prevent war is not to fear it.

Hi...everyone...i just stumbled upon this thread...and very much interested to join in..
to those who can correct any of my mistakes...i gladly appreciate it

okay then...this is what i would like to share...

Hand-free

the last that i went to a hypermarket a couple of minutes away from my home..this happened...
while i was browsing rack after rack of goods...i noticed one teenage girl..she was pacing hurriedly through the aisle
with this serious expression on her face..and she was talking loudly....what caught my attention was that she was all by herself...
so i was thinking..was the girl mentally alright?
after a while of staring at her...i knew then that of course the girl was alright..(silly..silly me...)
as it turned out, the girl was talking on the phone..using the hand-free device..
so that got me thinking..is shopping now becoming so hard of a chores that we need to keep both hands free?
but of course...on the other hand...the girl..and many others actually know to use all these techno devices to their advantages..right?

and now i at my college, i speak everyday English(sometimes i mixed with malay) ....because almost my classmate are foreigner students and i had 2 foreigner lectures ... so everyday i speak english here with them....

i can speak English with self confident now, but my grammar so bad, and i always bored during English class huhu...so boring...i didnt like grammar...

ermm today are important day... today was pre-presentation for my group of final project... in this project we are need to make digital painting..

hi all...

i like this thread.. i realised this thread a few times ago, but today i want to post here....hope someone here will correct my mistakes..

noticed
before -
today, I decided
hopefully

actually i'm bad in English, and not like English during school.... but after i entered matriculation, i became interested with this language because the way they tought are interested..but i still cannot speak..

my English is not that good
I didn't like the subject when I was at school
studied in matriculation
started to have an interest
in
taught English
were interesting
unfortunately, I still can't speak the language fluently

and now i at my college, i speak everyday English(sometimes i mixed with malay) ....because almost my classmate are foreigner students and i had 2 foreigner lectures ... so everyday i speak english here with them....

that I am in college,
I often speak in English (although sometimes I mixed it with malay)
this is because most of my classmates are foreigners
not only that, 2 of my lecturers are also from oversea
we speak English among ourselves

i can speak English with self confident now, but my grammar so bad, and i always bored during English class huhu...so boring...i didnt like grammar...

Nowadays, I am quite confident conversing in English
however, I need to improve my grammar
to make the matter worse, I always feel bored during my English class -
now - how can I improve my grammar?

ermm today are important day... today was pre-presentation for my group of final project... in this project we are need to make digital painting..

sometimes i fed up with this project because only 4 students participated in this project include me... most our members(foreigner student) didnt took part in this...let them go away..

earlier today was an
needed
most of
students
omit - let them go away or you can use:  let them be -

ok about today, just 3 of us go infront all our lectures and present our project and i were responsibility to present my group design...all presentation in English..

i felt afraid to present, i felt shaked...but i tried my best....this was my second presentation for semester1,.. i not prepared a text to talk, i just talked what i understanding about my design...

went to do the presentation of our project in front of the lecturers
I was responsible
this presentation was
i was scared and worried
did not
omit to talk
but I just explained thoroughly about my design
and hopefully they did understand some of them

so i tried talk clearly, hope they can understand my explaintation....Alhamdulillah i can do it even not perfect... my lectures and friends said ok.
..

omit (so... until  explanation)
did it just fine according to my friends and my lecturers

what happen during that time, my lectures asked many question and condemn our design....they act not like our lectures but like our client...most the question we cannot answer...we felt sad you know..

and they also ask who not participate on this project... they ask them about the design but they cannot answer....
so our lectures gave them change to them or they will fail for this semester 1....actually our lectures know who not participated...

happened was
lecturers
questions and condemned
they acted as if they didn't like our presentation but prefer our clients
most of the questions we couldn't answer

asked
did not
asked
my friends couldn't
lecturers
will give them a chance
lecturers knew who didn't participate

hmm actually today i happy because i can done presentation, sad because my final project are not finish yet and felt funny when remember our presentation...

today already go, so now i want put my best in this final project....InsyaALLAH next week will be a real presentation for our final project...

I am happy
finished
but a bit worried
is

past/gone
