Mancini puts focus on Man United tie
Roberto Mancini intends keeping the stampede of players wanting to join Manchester City at bay until after the Carling Cup semi-final with Manchester United.
Mancini has had a little more than two weeks to assess the quality he has at his disposal following the sacking of Mark Hughes.
Yet despite the widespread theory of City being a club overloaded with players, the Italian is scrambling around for an experienced team to tackle a United side badly wounded by Leeds yesterday.
It means new arrivals are virtually certain, with Patrick Vieira said to be on the brink of a return to the Premier League and a reunion with Mancini, his former manager at Inter Milan.
Cristian Chivu and Ivan Cordoba are a couple of additional players surplus to Jose Mourinho's requirements who may end up at Eastlands before the month is over.
To Mancini, the names being bandied about, plus a limitless number of others from elsewhere on the continent, are hardly a surprise.
For now though, Mancini is concentrating purely on United, and helping City reach their first major domestic final since 1981.
"All the players want to join Manchester City," he said. "That is normal with a big club who is going to have a big future.
" eople are not only talking about Patrick Vieira, they are also saying Ivan Cordoba and Cristian Chivu.
"They are all good players but the most important thing for me is the match against Manchester United.
"The other things we can talk about with the club after the derby. We will see then."
The arrival of Vieira would be particularly interesting, given the impact he had on the English game with Arsenal before quitting to join Juventus in 2006, leaving just a year later to mould himself to the blue section of the San Siro, where he became a title winner under Mancini.
Vieira's battles with Roy Keane are an enduring memory, while his experience as a serial trophy winner at both club and international level, winning Euro 2000 and reaching the 2006 World Cup final with France, would make him an invaluable asset to Mancini as he tries to guide the Blues into a top four spot.
However, it appears no deal will be done before the United game, leaving City to play a game of patch up.
Record signing Robinho is available, although whether he will start is another matter given Craig Bellamy is expected to figure, while doubts persist over Roque Santa Cruz and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Carlos Tevez returns to spearhead City's attack against his former club and 19-year-old Congo-born Belgian Dedryck Boyata is set to keep his place after impressing on his debut during the FA Cup third round win at Middlesbrough on Saturday.
