Boss satisfied with a point
Sir Alex Ferguson's intricately planned tactics were scuppered by Steven Gerrard's opening goal for Liverpool, but the Boss was nevertheless satisfied with a point after his side fought back to take a point at Anfield.
The Boss revealed after the 1-1 stalemate that his plan was to nullify Liverpool's threat before pushing for a late victory, only for Gerrard to strike as substitutes Wayne Rooney and Nani were poised to join the fray.
"We looked upon it as a two-team situation as we wanted to make sure there were no silly mistakes," Sir Alex told MUTV. "They had no real chances apart from Suarez when there was a lucky break but, other than that, they were never a threat to us. That job had been done, that's why we were bringing Wayne and Nani on when they scored the goal.
"We were looking to win the game at that stage. After they scored the goal they got a couple of chances, but we took a chance to win it, and quite rightly because that's the name of the game."
The United manager was left to rue the ease with which Gerrard was able to steer his free-kick through the United wall, smiling: "It was just bad defensive play." A point, however, represented a fair return after Javier Hernandez's late leveller.
"It was probably a typical United-Liverpool game," said Sir Alex. "It was very intense, of course, and I don't think the game really got started until Liverpool scored. It was a good game after that. When you're one-nothing down with 15 minutes to go you can't be confident, but we've got the players who can do that.
"You see Chicharito for the goal: it was absolutely fantastic. Skrtel's got his arms right around him and he's managed to free himself and get the header in. His record of goalscoring is unbelievable, the boy. He's just got that touch.
"I think, forgetting the last three games here, in the context of today the result was fair." |

£35m United playmaker target wants ‘golden’ exit
Manchester United – Marek Hamsik wants to leave Napoli next summer By Vanessa Keller October 17, 2011

I do not like players being held in a club against their will. I’m not just talking about Hamsik, but also Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was at Barcelona
Manchester United target Marek Hamsik is stuck in a ‘golden prison’ at Napoli, according to his agent, with the Slovakia international hoping for a move away from the club next summer.
Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has reportedly blocked multiple moves for the 24-year-old over the last summer, with AC Milan and Inter Milan also interested in taking Hamsik on board.
And while Manchester United have been closely monitoring the situation, Hamsik’s agent Mino Railoa claiming he is being held against his will at Napoli.
"I don’t know if this will be Hamsik’s last year at Napoli, but it is certainly a prison for him, albeit a golden one,” Railoa said.
“I do not like players being held in a club against their will. I’m not just talking about Hamsik, but also Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was at Barcelona.”
United have long been linked to Hamsik, with Talksport rating the midfielder at £35 million.
Hamsik is seen as a possible replacement for Paul Scholes, and would have lower wage demands than United’s long-standing target Wesley Sneijder.

Otelul vs Man United Player Ratings
Manchester United finally got their first win in this season's Champions League with a 2-0 win over Otelul Galati.
However, the tie did not turn out to be as smooth-sailing as the United faithful had expected.
The Otelul defence proved to be tough to break down in the first half, and just when Wayne Rooney had given United the lead from the spot, Nemanja Vidic threatened to undo all their hard work when he got sent off in the 66th minute.
Ultimately, the Red Devils held on bravely, before a second Rooney penalty sealed the points in the bag.
Here, ESPNSTAR.com takes a look at the players who made a difference.
Otelul Galati
Branko Grahovac - 7
The Bosnian keeper should be pleased with his performance, despite being beaten twice from the spot. Absolutely faultless when it came to handling high balls, and didn't have much to do apart from that.
Cornel Rapa - 7.5
Was engaged in an intriguing duel with Nani all night long, and more than held his own. Will be grateful to his right-winger Liviu Antel, who regularly tracked back to give him a helping hand.
Milan Perendiga - 6
What started out as a quite impressive showing by the Serbian stopper ended in ignominy, after Perendija lost his discipline in the second half.
Tested the referee's patience on a number of instances by following through on Hernandez, and ultimately received his marching orders with the game winding down for a second bookable offence.
Sergiu Costin - 6
Like his partner in central defence, Costin undid all his good work in the first half by handing United a penalty after sticking his hand out to block a Rooney cross. In his defence, it was probably instinctive, but the look on his face said it all.
He had made a mistake, and he knew it.
Adrian Salageanu - 7
Kept Antonio Valencia fairly quiet, and proved too strong for Fabio when the United right-back ventured forward. A strong performance from the 28-year-old.
Ionut Neagu (off 72') - 6.5
Didn't offer Otelul much going forward, but at least he stuck to his task and never stopped hurrying the United ball-carriers.
Ioan Filip - 7.5
The future looks bright for the 22-year-old dynamic midfielder, who displayed a full array of skills on Tuesday night. Strong in the tackle, neat in his distribution, and unafraid to shoot on sight, Filip took the honours in his duel against United's more-illustrious midfielders.
Gabriel Giurgiu - 6.5
Like Neagu, Giurgiu did the thankless task of pressuring United in the centre of the park, although he could have been slightly more adventurous in the latter stages of the first half, just as Otelul were starting to dominate possession.
Was however responsible for Nemanja Vidic's sending off, when his surging run down the left was illegally halted by the United skipper.
Liviu Antel - 9
Man of the match by a mile. Almost seemed as though United's "Three-lung" Park Ji-sung had pulled on an Otelul jersey. Antel was everywhere - helping Rapa out in defence, before charging forward and stretching the United defence down the right flank. Whipped in a couple of dangerous balls that clearly had Anders Lindegaard bothered, and nearly opened the scoring a minute before half-time when he leapt highest to send a header just over.
Sorin Frunza (off 83') - 6
Disappointing game from the veteran winger, who should have really looked to exploit Fabio's inexperience. Instead, the 33-year-old was content to pass the ball on at every opportunity.
Bratislav Punosevac (off 87') - 7
Led the line admirably for Otelul, but was never going to get the better of both Chris Smalling and Vidic, especially playing as a lone striker.
Subs
Marius Pena (on 72') - 6.5
Hardly got into the game, despite being thrown on to give the Romanian outfit an added option up forward.
Silviu Ilie (on 83') - N/A
Hardly enough time to make an impact.
Gabriel Vigilanti (on 87') - N/A
Was brought on purely as a desperate measure, although the commentators had fun with his name. Especially after the 'vigilante' hacked down one of the United players.
Man United
Anders Lindegaard - 6
An unimpressive showing from the Dane, who must has to remain consistent if he wants to usurp David de Gea as United first choice. Flapped at a couple of high balls, and failed to instill any sort of confidence in his back four.
Fabio (off 76') - 6.5
Adventurous but ineffective game from the young Brazilian. Spent more time in the forward half than at the back, resulting in Antonio Valencia having to cover him on numerous occasions.
Nemanja Vidic - 6
A horror return to the starting XI for United's Serbian skipper. Gave away the ball cheaply on a number of occasions in the first half, and was then shown a straight red in the 66th minute for a high challenge on Giurgiu. The sending off may have been harsh, but he was having a shocker anyway.
Chris Smalling - 7.5
One of United's better performers on the night. Stood tall at the back, and looked to initiate attacks from defence, in the absence of Rio Ferdinand.
Patrice Evra - 7
Another solid if unspectacular display from the French left-back.
Antonio Valencia (off 71') - 7
Never stopped running down the right flank, and at times resembled Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt - covering both the right-back and right-midfield positions. Just wonder if he needs to add another dimension to his game, considering most defenders have realised he's going to push the ball down the flank and whip it in.
Michael Carrick - 7
Did his task of shielding the back four, but like many of his team-mates, failed to offer anything going forward. For someone regarded as a 'pass-master', his distribution was especially woeful in the first half.
Anderson - 6.5
With Carrick deployed behind him, Anderson was given free rein to try and find holes in the Otelul defence, a task he ultimately failed to do so. Looks more comfortable as a box-to-box midfielder, rather than an advanced playmaker. May be the United player most eagerly awaiting the return of Tom Cleverley.
Nani - 8
Was the one United player most likely to carve the Otelul defence. Went on countless forays down the left flank, and often got the better of his opponents, despite sometimes being double-teamed by Rapa and Antel.
Wayne Rooney - 8.5
Quiet in the first half, but came to life in the second. Went in search of his own ball after being frustrated by the lack of supply from the United midfield. Earned the first penalty when his cross to Javier Hernandez was handled by Costin, before he got another when he was tripped in the box after a sharp turn.
Put away the spot kick on both occasions with aplomb.
Javier Hernandez - 7
Some may suggest Hernandez fails to offer anything outside the penalty box, and that has proven to be the case in the past. However, the Mexican hitman was extremely active on Tuesday night, often dropping deep and holding the ball up well - something he hasn't been able to do in the past.
While he failed to get on the scoresheet, Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased with Hernandez's endeavour on the night.
Subs
Jonny Evans (on 71') - 6.5
Probably did a good enough job shoring up the United defence following Vidic's sending off, but the sheer look of fear on the United fans' faces just goes to show Evans isn't exactly their ideal choice in the heart of defence.
Phil Jones (on 76') - 7
Strong, quick and fearless in the tackle, Jones proved he will be one to watch in the future, even in this brief 15-minute cameo. |
