La Liga - Barca crush Valencia  Eurosport -  Sat, 15 Dec 22:59:00 2007

Barcelonaput a faltering Valencia to the sword as they won 3-0 at the MestallaStadium to cut Real Madrid's lead at the top of La Liga to two points.

Two goals from Samuel Eto'o and one form Eidur Gudjohnsen sealed the points, in a match where the only low point for Barca was the withdrawal through injury of Lionel Messi in the first half.
TheArgentinian, recently voted third best player in the World in thevoting for the Ballon d'Or, pulled up after chasing a long ball justbefore half time, and is now a doubt for the top of the table clashwith Real Madrid next weekend.
Eto'o's first-half doublecontinues his return to form following his goal against Stuttgart inthe Champions League earlier in the week, and shows he has not lost histouch.
For the first he swiftly turned inside one defender onthe edge of the box, beat another and fired a solid strike with minimalbacklift past keeper Santiago Canizares into the far top corner.
Thesecond was the culmination of a sublime team move that saw the Camerooninternational play the ball to Xavi Hernandez and continue his run intothe box. Xavi rolled the ball to Messi who with one touch releasedEto'o inside the area to stroke past the stranded Canizares into thenet.
The ex-Spain international was furious with his defence, and he had every right to be, especially centre back pairing Ivan Helguera and Carlos Marchena who, despite their combined experience, at times looked woefully out of their depth.
Things got worse after half time when, after a brief improvement form the home side, Barca re-asserted their superiority.
Brazilianprodigy Giovanni do Santos, who replaced Messi, had one shot from 35yards out acrobatically saved by Canizares, unselfishly elected to playthe ball across to Eidur Gudjohnsen for a simple tap-in when he couldhave had a shot himself.
In truth Valencia, without a winsince they beat Murcia 3-0 in early November, had looked as though thelast thing they needed to get them back on track was a visit from arejuvenated Eto'o and co.
They looked nervous from the outset, and right from the kick off Barca swept forward and Messi almost playedEto'o through on goal, and a few minutes later the Argentinian dribbledacross the back four and slipped another ball into the path of theCameroonian striker.
Valencia have now not scored a goal forsix league games, their worst barren run for over 40 years, and theonly signs of any positive endeavour came through David Silva.
After striker Fernando Morientes was substituted in the first half, also for a hamstring problem, Silva linked up well with replacement Vicente, although the Barcelona defence were as ruthless as the attack was irresistible.
Eto'owas substituted after 67 minutes by manager Frank Rijkaard, who willhave half an eye on next weeks 'Clasico' with the defending champions.

La Liga - Valencia keen to keep veteran stars  Eurosport -  Fri, 28 Dec 15:40:00 2007

Valenciaare not looking to get rid of dropped players David Albelda, SantiagoCanizares and Miguel Angel Angulo, club president Juan Bautista Solerhas said.

"It is a technical decision taken by [coach Ronald] Koeman. They haven't been separated from the squad, or sacked. They simplyhaven't been selected," Soler stated.
Koeman has told theexperienced trio that they no longer featured in his plans after theclub fell out of European competition and off the pace in the Ligatitle race.
"This is the official version from the club. Thecoach said he did not count on them for now. No one has said they willnot be recalled to the side again. I hope they will return to play forthe club," Soler added.
Both Albelda and Canizares believedthey were being forced out and have asked the club to honour andrelease them from their contracts so they can seek transfers.
Spainmidfielders Albelda and Angulo and former Spain goalkeeper Canizaresare three of the longest-serving members of the squad.
"Thesetypes of things have happened in other clubs. Real Madrid decided toget rid of Ronaldo, and dropped David Beckham, Raul and Guti lastseason and these same players ended up coming back to win them theleague," Soler added.
"It is a temporary situation. The peoplewho hold the key to reversing the decision are the players. It is inthe hands of the players and the coach."
Valencia are seventh in the standings, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid.
