haha...mine is hardbound UK edition because I live in the UK now.  Malas nak order the American edition.  Besides, I got the book for Christmas.  It's quite difficult to read it lying down because it's heavy, but I think I'll manage :bg:.  I guess the paperback edition will be quite thick especially if they make the pages smaller.

Hmmm....this is very interesting.  I'm not a fan of Sherlock Holmes and so, I have no idea if he's gay or not.  Hercule Poirot?  Well....I haven't thought about it either until I read the article posted here.  It was mentioned in some books that Poirot has an affinity for red-haired women, but of course...no romance or whatsoever in the books.  I guess these kind of books are famous for being just purely detective stories, without any romantic or sexual flavours.

Oh well..it doesn't matter if Poirot or Miss Marple are gay or not...I'll still like Agatha Christie's books :bg:.  I, for one, disagree with Joyce regarding relationship between man and man, mand and woman.

I think the only thing that we can deduce from detective stories of yore are that they all are sexually hopeless...ahahahahah

Unlike 'new generation' detectives like those film-noir types or even Fleming's or Trevanian's....(who seems to make it a prerequisite to bed a woman before going off on a mission or case...more like a last supper I guess...ahahahha)

I always thought that Holmes as a cold man, like the Batman after Frank Miller's treatment.

Poirot is a bit of a goof...don't you think so?

I, Myself (macam bagus je) am more partial tu Marlowe. Phillip not Christopher, though Christopher is reputed to be both a poof and a spy...

salam..

just call me Da .. thanks blessyou really happy and appreaciate the thread.
but dear , my SH is not GAY ...he is abit weird that's all....my oh my

there are few or even 1001 plausible  reasons as to why he is described as being very cold towards women - but one author did actually try to discuss about this in his BOOk - The NEW Adventure Of Sherlock Holmes by MIKE ASHLEY.  It was all due to his mother - described as beings too stern/ strict and not so expressive in terms of emotion . In that book you'll learn his family roots etc.May be Freud theory ( euww ..euww) about his latent stage of childhood stage could explain that or Erikson 's theory of psychosocial development will shed some light upon this matter .. wallahuallam.

about his being cold..well...
NOT quite true- even Stamford and Watson watched him hit a cadaver with his walking stick - referred to the STUDY IN SCARLET...

if you happened to read THE CANON-  a term referred to all the original  adventures / stories of SH then you will find that in one / two occasions Holmes, in fact DId show  some emotions- referred to the THE CASE OF 3 GARRIDEBS
- at the time where dr Watson was shot ...
and in most cases well,  i  personally think that he is a very sentimental,   good / in fact very caring  person ..but afraid to show his emotion- esp LOVE - why? hahahah
because  ( i pun sama jugak kot heheh, to a certain extent ) he viewed love as
"a poison to COGNITIVE ABILITY/ reasoning  - could clouded ones judgement, and women being a very " dangerous , " stupid creature" but not for long though till he met his match - Irene Adler ( nee Norton)..
Ironicaly he is also known by us to be very addictive to Coccaine kan?hahahahah

but those yg read Sherlocks ( well satu lagi another story about him ) written ? found? by John  T Lescroart - Rasputin Revenge  will know how deeply he is in love with this " Lady - The woman as he like to addressed her as"

one more thing..well it is quite illogical kan when we read - SCANDAL in Bohemia that  at the end of the story ,what  he wanted from the King himself ( it is thought that after thorough/ extensive  reaserch done by the SHERLOCKIANAS- he was the son ? or the the next Kaiser of Germany - Von Bismarck!! ( tak ingat dah  can' remember anymore ages ago ) only the phot0graph of Irene..
so kalau nak baca lagi kena gi Sherlock Holmes International  ada link to Christ Redmond homepage so ade articles  kat these 2 websites - yg ilmiah yer explaining what actually happened..heheheheh.. (hypothesizing ) - one of the writers mentioned that Holmes married to this gal actually.

if i am not mistaken the article entitled - notaeirena-    and there  are several  theories put forward by the those sherlock enthusiasts about holmes' high  hypotheticodeductive ability, whether he's eing autistic ..yer..gAy and what not ..

so...Holmes is real of course he's not being called Sherlock  or lived in 221 baker Street ( but is believed that he lived in Bond Street) his birthday i can't recall but around 12 december ...1854 _ reger Baringould ( ni kena refer to website Shelrock Holmes  International)

and he loves chemistry  hhehhee

funny perception about human brain..

A reply in Three Part

errr. racer....hehehe....

The Article
a stuttering dwarf with a spoon could be very dangerous actually....due to the fact that they are (usually) at a level (heightwise) to do some excruriating damage, even with a spoon...ahahahahahahha..but great article...excellent....I'll recommend the URL to another forum of mine...that's the least that I can do for you...

The Comment
It is always funny to see the reaction of some people towards book-toting individuals...i.e. they're either some book distributor or some student who had too many frat party and now is catching up on their modules..

and there are some of them (the number is shrinking though) that to them, the ability to read and write is just a closed err..written down things for them...ahahaha...thus they feel a disdain or jealousy towards those who could make sense of the squiggly lines...to them, a book is a handy thing to balance that annoying tilting table...

and there's another group, or species...which I think is worse...I'm talking about those who use it as a status symbol...these people could be recognised by the carpet sized family potrait of them in front of a really bad painting of a chock-full bookcase...ahahahahaha....they'll have couple of 'coffee table' books with titles like "House Of Sunda" or "The Journey With Picasso" even if they can't tell the difference between a Balinese Teak furniture with a rubber wood Jinjang reclining chair....

but sometimes, sometimes....there are some houses that you go to, that looked sparse in the living room (The TV would only distract from the conversation, this is a big clue) but when you asked politely as where the bathroom would be, you would, on the way to the bathroom of course, noticed a room or the corridor or hall itself, that would be lined up with racks and racks of books....once you finished your call to nature (putting down the toilet seat of course...) you would be delighted in some of the titles...some aging novels or a gem of a tome....

all is not lost it seems after all......although probably I have to agree that some of us are really slow readers (which would aptly explain why some of our books that we lend out was never returned)

The Group
Rarely I've been introduced to a yahoo group that actually piqued my interest (although UmmiKu Sayang was forced down to my throat)....and you have a number of writers as well...is there a dais somewhere where I could put this ruhayatX? ahahaha...didn't see marquez anywhere though...but then..it's a lot to sift through...and I just scratching the surface....cool site...I'll recommend them to many people....(that means four**)...but given the level of intellectuality in that site...it scares me to even give a comment...I'll have to ransack a library for a few centuries to get up to that level of thinking....ahahahahha (I'm a slow reader as well you know...2O words per minute, and those are in large letters)

** as in a trollish way of counting...which many is a number..it goes one, two, three, many, many-one, many-two, many-three, many-many. (which dispells the myth that trolls are stupid and can't count) ..sorry....it's some stupid knowledge that I store in my head....any more of that modular brain in your head Racer? ahahahahahha

Actually...

...I started the newsgroup after getting kicked out of a couple of Muslim newsgroups. So I thought, bugger that, I'll roll my own where no one can kick me out. And that's how it came about.

I was hoping that it would start some kind of an intellectual discourse, but so far not many people have posted. So it's more like my blog, actually.

Tapi kasi advertise la newsgroup tu kat tempat lain. Feel free to drag other people kicking and screaming to the place and force them to contribute at knife point. Heck, if I don;t like 'em, I can just kick them out. Hehehe. Kidding.
