Barcelona 5-0 Levante
Barcelona responded to Real Madrid's win at Sporting Gijon earlier on Saturday by hitting Levante for five at the Nou Camp.

With Madrid having taken control of the title race over recent weeks, Barca kicked off this clash six points behind their bitter rivals having played the same number of games.

But, with El Clasico on the horizon next weekend, they put on a show that suggested they are ready to fight to retain their title.

Cesc Fabregas got them going with a first-half brace, while Isaac Cuenca, Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez also found the net.

Having watched on as Madrid notched up another routine win earlier in the day, Pep
Guardiola's men knew a strong start was needed if they were to get on top of a Levante side still riding high after a surprise start to the season.
They got it too, taking the lead with just four minutes gone.

Andres Iniesta played a short ball into the feet of Fabregas and, after advancing a pace to the edge of the box, he drilled a precise right-footed shot beyond the reach of Gustavo Munua and into the bottom corner.

Iniesta and Messi both took aim in a bid to extend the lead, with the latter forcing Munua into a smart save, before Fabregas did make it two with 33 minutes gone.
This time he did the damage with his head, rising highest to glance a Xavi free-kick over Munua.

Two quickly became three, with rising star Cuenca doing the damage eight minutes before the half-time whistle.

Having impressed so much in the 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in midweek, the 20-year-old added further momentum to his growing reputation by curling in after Messi and Iniesta had fashioned an overlap for him.
Any fanciful hopes Levante had of starting a comeback were ended within 10 minutes of the restart.

Dani Alves ran at their defence and, after his slide-rule pass found Messi, the Argentinian did the rest with a neat finish from eight yards that brought him his 27th goal of the season.
Sanchez then made it five, although his 61st-minute strike did carry a touch of fortune.

Messi worked an opening for him on the left of the area and his chipped effort clipped the head of Sergio Ballesteros and dipped over the reach of Munua.

Messi planted a simple chance wide from two yards with 12 minutes remaining and Pedro also fluffed his lines when presented with the chance of a sixth, while Iniesta had a sweet volley wrongly ruled out for offside but it mattered little.

MADRID - Kemenangan ke atas musuh ketat, Real Madrid di Bernabeu dalam pertembungan clasico hujung minggu ini mampu melonjakkan semangat Barcelona untuk sepanjang musim ini, kata Lionel Messi semalam.

"Ia akan menjadi satu perlawanan yang hebat. Nyata adalah amat penting buat kami untuk mendapatkan satu keputusan yang baik kerana ia bakal memberikan lonjakan semangat bagi sepanjang musim ini.

"Begitupun jika gagal, kami tidak mempunyai banyak masa untuk rehat kerana kami mempunyai tugasan besar lain di Jepun iaitu bertanding dalam kejohanan Piala Kelab Dunia FIFA dari 15 hingga 18 Disember,'' kata Messi dalam satu temu bual di laman web badan bola sepak dunia, FIFA.

Bagaimanapun sebelum memikirkan tentang saingan kelab dunia, Barca, penyandang juara La Liga dan Liga Juara-Juara Eropah perlu melunaskan dulu dendam ke atas Real yang kini meneraju liga dengan tiga mata, malah mempunyai kelebihan satu perlawanan.

Messi dan bintang tengah Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez juga mempunyai persaingan peribadi dengan bintang Real, Cristiano Ronaldo kerana ketiga-tiga mereka disenarai sebagai calon akhir bagi merebut anugerah FIFA Ballon d'Or 2011.

Malah, Messi dan Ronaldo kini berkongsi sebagai penjaring terbanyak La Liga dengan masing-masing sudah meledakkan 17 gol.

"Ia memang hebat jika dapat memenangi anugerah individu, terutama anugerah yang sangat berprestij tetapi pada saya apa yang paling penting adalah memenangi perlawanan serta gelaran,'' kata bintang Argentina berusia 24 tahun itu lagi.

Guardiola mahu tambah kejuaraan

MADRID - Barcelona mahu menambah rekod kejuaraan di bawah bimbingan Pep Guardiola bulan ini dengan misi untuk memperoleh trofi ke-13 apabila beraksi dalam kejohanan Kelab Piala Dunia.

Di bawah kendalian Guardiola dalam tiga tahun, Barcelona menguasai bola sepak Eropah dan liga Sepanyol dengan baik.

Pada musim panas lalu, kemenangan dalam Piala Super Eropah menewaskan Porto adalah trofi ke-12 yang dikumpul skuad bimbingan Guardiola, sekali gus menandingi 11 kemenangan ketika kelab itu di bawah kendalian Johan Cruyff dalam masa lapan tahun sejak 1980.

Barcelona yang mempunyai pemain bintang seperti calon anugerah Ballon D'Or, Xavi dan Lionel Messi akan menyertai kejohanan di Jepun pada peringkat separuh akhir, sama seperti juara Amerika Selatan, Santos dari Brazil.

Pada penyertaan kali ini skuad Catalan mahu mengulangi pencapaian 2009 apabila bangkit dari ketinggalan pada final menewaskan kelab Argentina, Estudiantes 2-1 pada masa tambahan.

Ia adalah kemenangan luar biasa buat Barca pada tahun itu apabila turut memenangi Piala Raja, menewaskan Athletic Bilbao 4-1.

Pelantikan Guardiola pada 2008 atas pertimbangan Presiden Joan Laporta dan ahli lembaga pasukan itu dianggap sebagai satu perjudian yang berbaloi bagi menggantikan jurulatih terdahulu Frank Rijkaard yang dipecat setelah hilang kawalan di bilik persalinan.

Walaupun tidak berpengalaman, Guardiola mewarisi asas pasukan yang kuat, walaupun pengaruh mereka beransur hilang pada akhir musim 2007-08 dan terlepas untuk mendapatkan kejuaraan kepada Real Madrid.

Langkah paling penting Guardiola ialah memperkenalkan disiplin serta meletakkan kepercayaannya kepada pemain muda yang difahami dengan baik. Dia turut mempertimbangkan pemain berprofil tinggi seperti Ronaldinho dan Deco, yang telah kehilangan gaya permaianan mereka.

PERTEMBUNGAN antara Real dan Barcelona sentiasa menyajikan aksi panas antara pemain kedua-dua pasukan.

MADRID - Pertembungan El Clasico di antara Real Madrid dengan musuh tradisi- nya, Barcelona awal pagi esok sememangnya dinantikan oleh penyokong kedua-dua kelab tersebut.

Real kini tampak lebih bersedia mengharungi ancaman Barca, apatah lagi skuad kendalian Jose Mourinho itu akan beraksi di gelanggang sendiri di Santiago Berna- beu.

Justeru, pertemuan kali ini dianggap sebagai medan terbaik untuk membukti- kan kepada penyokong-penyokong setia skuad The Galaticos bahawa mereka mampu untuk merealisasikan impian tersebut.

Dalam dua musim ini sebelum ini, domi- nasi Barca sukar dicabar apabila mereka merekodkan kejuaraan sebanyak dua kali berturut-turut - 2008/2009 dan 2009/ 2010.

Bagaimanapun, Real dilihat berada pada tahap prestasi terbaik mereka untuk merampas kejuaraan daripada skuad The Catalan berdasarkan rekod cemerlang mereka dalam saingan musim ini.

Setakat ini, Real ternyata unggul apabila merekodkan 12 kemenangan, satu seri dan tewas hanya sekali dalam 14 perlawanan.

Malah, anak-anak buah Mourinho boleh mendabik dada apabila berada di puncak liga dengan mengumpul 37 mata, tiga mata meninggalkan Barca di tangga kedua.

"Kamu tidak akan tahu, dalam bola sepak pastinya akan ada elemen kejutan.

"Ketika ini, kami berasa yakin, malah kami merupakan sebuah pasukan yang lebih baik jika dibandingkan dengan musim lalu," kata Mourinho.

Sementara itu, perancang Barcelona, Xavi ternyata tidak gentar dengan rekod cemerlang Real musim ini, sebaliknya opti- mis mereka mampu mengutip tiga mata penuh di hadapan ribuan penyokong Real.

"Memang benar Real ketika ini berada pada tahap prestasi terbaik mereka.

"Prestasi mereka lebih baik berbanding musim lalu. Namun bagi kami, ia tidak membawa apa-apa makna langsung.

"Pertemuan yang dianggap klasik ini tidak ada kena mengena dengan rekod atau statis- tik yang dicatatkan kedua-dua pasukan sebelum ini kerana dalam bola sepak apa sahaja boleh berlaku," jelas Xavi. - Reuters

Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona

Barcelona recovered from the quickest El Clasico goal in history to end Real Madrid's 15-match winning run and strike a blow in the La Liga title race.

Despite having lifted the trophy for three years in a row and enjoying both domestic and European dominance over Madrid over recent times, Pep Guardiola's men went into Saturday night's match as the underdogs, trailing the capital club by three points and having played a game more.

Madrid's form also justified their position as favourites and, when Karim Benzema cashed in on a Victor Valdes error after just 23 seconds, talk of a changing of a guard seemed fair.

But Barcelona showed why they are about to jet off for the FIFA Club World Cup as Europe's best side, hitting back with three goals that silenced the Bernabeau.

The first and third, scored by Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas, both came 60 seconds after two inexplicably glaring misses from Cristiano Ronaldo, while the second from Xavi came via a huge deflection.

None of that should take the shine off a marvellous result for the Catalan club, though, who will now head to Japan as leaders of La Liga courtesy of their better head-to-head record over Madrid, who still have a game in hand.

Madrid will no doubt have pulled clear again by the time they return after Christmas, and their performance was better than the ones they put in against Barca last season.

Coach Jose Mourinho will take little comfort from that, but it had looked as though he would be celebrating when his side got off to a dramatic start.

On a sodden night, Valdes scuffed a clearance straight to Angel Di Maria and, after Sergio Busquets had blocked Mesut Ozil's subsequent shot, Benzema was on the spot to beat the stricken goalkeeper from six yards.

Valdes, aware of how costly his error could be, punched the ground in frustration, while six minutes later at the other end, opposite number Iker Casillas excelled when he pushed a Lionel Messi effort around the post.

Despite Messi's strike, Madrid remained the better side and another fluffed kick from Valdes presented Xabi Alonso with an open goal which he could not find from halfway, before Ronaldo spurned his first golden chance.

With all eyes on how he and Messi would square-up ahead of the upcoming Ballon D'or presentation, he received possession on the edge of the box after a pass from Benzema but, rather than slide Di Maria into space, he shot wide.

Despite his selfishness, it was still a chance Ronaldo would have been expected to have taken, and he was made to pay on 30 minutes as Barca levelled.

A run from Messi took him towards the heart of the Madrid defence and he threaded a pass through to Alexis who did the rest from just inside the area.

Madrid would head to the dressing rooms with even more to grumble about, though, with
Messi fortunate to avoid a second yellow card for a foul on Alonso minutes after being booked for dissent.

The start to the second half was not as dramatic as the first, but there was a goal inside eight minutes.

Barca were the scorers, with Xavi putting them ahead on his 600th appearance for the club with a strike that owed a lot to good fortune.

The midfielder took aim from 25 yards and Casillas had it covered until it clipped the heels of Marcelo, leaving the goalkeeper stranded as the ball spun in off the inside of his post.

Having got off to such a perfect start, Madrid were stunned, and Casillas had to be smart to keep out Alexis at his near post.

Messi then fizzed a free-kick wide, before Ronaldo unbelievably planted a free header wide of Valdes' post after a pinpoint Alonso cross.

And, as with his first glorious opportunity, Barca scored within 60 seconds of it, as
Fabregas got in at the back post to put a stunning diving header back across Casillas' after a great ball in from Dani Alves.

Madrid looked to set up a thrilling finale, with Benzema and Kaka but going close, but it was not to be and Barca eased home.
