Good ol' Johnny is finally catching up with the times
Johnny's Entertainment is known for having used strict upholding of laws relating to copyright and right to use of one's own image to strictly ban images and photographs of its idols from the internet. Banned on the firm's official website as a matter of course, their images are banned from news sites - not even the covers of magazines featuring a Johnny's artist can be shown. Furthermore, on any drama's official website, only the actor from Johnny's is missing, represented by a silhouette or illustration. Alternatively, an artificially rendered image of the idol can be given and used in that way.
However, this appears to be in the process of changing dramatically.
"The website of Sakurai Sho (Arashi)'s new drama, Toujou Kabachi! (TBS), originally had, in typical Johnny's style, Sho's image rendered as an illustrating. However, on the 15th of January, it suddenly changed into a normal photograph, just like the rest of the cast. Also, the images of Yamashita Tomohisa of 'Code Blue -2nd Season-' (Fuji TV) and Kamenashi Kazuya, Uchi Hiroki and Tegoshi Yuya of 'Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge' (TBS) have all become clear photographs. Because of this change in circumstance, it can surely be assumed that the images of the talents are now allowed to be used on drama websites." (Reporter specialising in Johnny's Entertainment)
Up until now, Johnny's Entertainment has said that the reason for the ban has been to uphold 'copyright and rights to use of image' laws. However, whenever Johnny's artists have done commercials, their images have been shown clearly on the client's website. Furthermore, any movie with the right amount of money or sponsoring behind it has been able to show clear images of the Johnny's actors on its site. It's true that this just cause has very large inconsistencies.
"Regarding the approval given to NHK's Kouhaku Uta Gassen last year, Johnny's Entertainment explained that, 'We are taking into account multiple factors - the modern diversification of media, the advancement in security on the internet and the rising public awareness of copyright and image laws'. This change of attitude has probably also led to the allowance on drama sites. Essentially, it has resulted in a 'lifting of the net ban'." (Same reporter as above)
Incidentally, the sites with the photographs of the idols have had security improved on their websites so that the images cannot be copied.
This change in Johnny's Entertainment - a loss or a compromise? At any rate, it's no mistake that the company is, if belatedly, finally catching up with the times.
When Yamashita called me and said “Concerts got decided for me,” I said “I’ll come watch,” and then he said “Be in it.” The show I was in was the first one on November 21st, but it seems his original plan was to get me to be in all of his shows. Even on the last day before the real shows, he’d say “You can really only make tomorrow? “ “I’m starting to feel like it’d be such a waste,” “What about Osaka?” during the meetings. My schedule wouldn’t work out, so it ended up being just one show, but I think things like these are just right when you feel “there should’ve been more, such a waste” (laughs).
We immediately decided to do Yokubou no Rain, a KinKi Kids song we used to sing together. I didn’t want it to seem like I was there just for the hell of it, so we took an entire day for the dance lessons, and on the actual day, I was there from the rehearsals to the soundcheck. Despite all this, Yamashita messed up the lyrics! I tsukkomi’ed him afterwards, and he said “The emotions just got too strong…” True, we’d always said “We should do something together,” and I had a lot of fun too. But more than anything, what made me happy was seeing Yamashita make his wish of having solo concerts come true. Because I know what it took and how much effort it took to get there. The relationship between me and Yamashtia? Mm~, I get asked this a lot, but my answer is always “It’s a complex one.”
Around the end of the last year, I tried to look hard at myself again. I felt I was slacking a bit until now. So I decided to do more manly work. When I thought I have to work harder, I looked around me again and I realized there were people who were doing their best!! Until then, I was very satisfied doing concerts with the group and acting in dramas. But then, I thought it wasn't good to be satisfied just with the present condition. "I want to become number 1 in Asia so I have to do more! More and more!!".
NEWS Yamashita to Cast in Popular Comic "Tomorrow's Joe"!
The popular comic "Tomorrow's Joe/あしたのジョー" which had been serial published from 1967 to 73 on "Weekly Shōnen Magazine/週刊少年マガジン" will be adapted into a movie!
NEWS member Yamashita Tomohisa will play the hero Joe Yabuki! And the movie will be shot from the end of March to May.
After finishing the drama "Code Blue 2nd Season/コード・ブルー ドクターヘリ緊急救命- 2nd season", Yamashita will start to exercise boxing.
Up till now, Yamashita has played the main role in only one movie, "Kurosagi/クロサギ" in 2008, and hit 17 hundred billion yen. However, the movie is based from the drama. So "Tomorrow's Joe "will be the first pure movie for Yamashita to play the lead role in.
With Arashi's Ninomiya to play the lead role in "GANTS", which is adapted from the comic on "Weekly Young Jump/週刊ヤングジャンプ", and Ohno to play in "Kaibutsu Kun" of Fujiko Fujio A, more and more Johnny's member is going to play the lead role in the movie from popular comics.
The movie is also a main part of "Tomorrow's Joe"'s 30th anniversary. Casts other than Yamashita have not been decided yet. Who will play the role of Danpei Tange, Tohru Rikiishi and Shiraki Yoko?
Let's expect the new movie together!
It has now been confirmed that the classic boxing manga "Ashita no Joe" will be turned into a live-action film, starring NEWS member Tomohisa Yamashita (24) as the protagonist Joe Yabuki. The movie is being directed by Fumihiko Sori ("Ping Pong," "ICHI") and is scheduled for release in early 2011.
The original manga, written by Asao Takamori and illustrated by Tetsuya Chiba, was published between 1968 and 1973. The manga's volumes have sold more than 20 million copies combined, and the story has been turned into two animated television series (1970-1971, 1980-1981), two animated films (1980, 1981), and a live-action film (1970) starring Shoji Ishibashi.
Yamashita was offered the role about a year ago. He has been a boxing fan for a long time, and has even trained on his own at a boxing gym in the past. He will soon begin serious training to prepare for the role, as filming is set to start in early April.
Actor Teruyuki Kagawa (44) has been cast as Danpei Tange, the former boxer who becomes Joe's mentor. Kagawa himself is a boxing aficionado - he used to write regularly for the monthly Boxing Magazine and has served as commentator for WOWOW's televised boxing matches.
The rest of the cast has not yet been revealed. A newspaper recently reported that the manga is also being turned into a drama series on TBS with actress (and Yamashita's rumored girlfriend) Keiko Kitagawa (23) playing the heroine role. However, TBS denied both claims, stating that Kitagawa doesn't even have a role in the movie.
