Valencia 1 - 0 Atl閠ico de Madrid
Valencia will take a one-goal lead into the second leg of this Copa del Rey quarter final after failing to make more of their advantage after Atl閠ico were reduced to ten men.
The hosts may rue missed chances following Thiago Motta's red card in the first half when the second game takes place next week in the Spanish capital.
David Silva scored the only goal of the night just after the half-hour mark in Mestalla as Valencia's impressive run in the cup continued unabated.
Before the game kicked off both Ronald Koeman and Javier Aguirre made changes as expected, but both sides were still strong as a place in the final draws closer.
It was always likely that the second leg in Vicente Calder髇 next week would prove to be decisive, but Valencia will be thinking that they should have given Atl閠ico more to do.
The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges with David Villa striking the post after 15 minutes before he had another effort soon after that troubled Ismael Falc髇.
What should have been a real turning point in the game as Motta slid in clumsily on Villa only a minute after being booked and the referee produces a second yellow card.
After having only just returned from injury, the on-loan midfielder was sent off and did little to his cause as he hopes to make the move from Barcelona permanent.
That sending off sparked the home side into pressing forward and after winning a series of corners, the breakthrough eventually came in the 33rd minute.
Silva met Vicente's corner and side-footed the ball past Falc髇 after Pablo Iba馿z had failed to clear at the far post to complete a miserable week for the central defender.
A few hefty tackles were then employed by the visitors in an attempt to slow the game down, but shortly before hte break Vicente had a great chance to make it to as Pablo again made a mistake.
After surviving until the break, Aguirre was able to reorganise although the second period was all about Atl閠ico trying to keep the deficit down to just the one goal.
Villa was impressing as he tested Falc髇 on several occasions, while Atl閠ico looked to break on the counter but rarely did they truly cause Timo Hildebrand.
In the closing minutes, Joqu韓 waltzed through the visitors defendce, but Valera made a crucial interception and with that went the last chance for Valencia to give themselves a real cushion for the second leg. |

Los Che Re-Sign Hern醤dez Accordingto reports on Madrid radio, Valencia have exercised the buy-back clausein the contract of Getafe midfielder Pablo Hern醤dez, who will nowreturn to the Mestalla on a long-term deal at the end of the currentseason.

Hern醤dez, 22, was sold to Getafe in the summer after spending a yearon loan at C醖iz in the Segunda Division, but Valencia put a buy-backclause into the contract that allowed them to re-purchase themidfielder for a specified fee.
Thatfee was 1 million Euros, which radio station Onda Madrid claim Valenciahave now paid to secure the services of Hern醤dez, who has signed asix-year contract with Ronald Koeman's side, starting at the end of thecurrent season.
Hern醤dez has been a regular in the Getafemidfield this season and has flourished alongside other young playerssuch as Esteban Granero and Rub閚 de la Red in the centre of the park.
Theirperformances have attracted attention from clubs across Spain and it isthought that Valencia had to move quickly to exercise the clause inHern醤dez's contract, as another club had made a firm offer to sign theyoungster at the end of the season.
Koeman appears to haveidentified the midfield area as the one which needs the mostimprovement, having already signed Ever Banega from Boca Juniors andHedwiges Maduro from Ajax, and it seems that he sees Hern醤dez asanother player that can fight for a spot as one of three centralmidfielders in his preferred 4-3-3 formation. |
