La Liga - Valencia lift gloom in Copa Eurosport - Wed, 30 Jan 22:22:00 2008
TroubledValencia claimed a place in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey afteran away goals win over Atletico that partially lifts the gloom aroundthe Mestalla.
Valencia, who have won just one of their last 10 Ligamatches, lost 3-2 on the night, but their 1-0 win in the first leg wasenough to see them through to the last four.
The game at the Vicente Calderon started badly for Valencia, full-back Miguel bundling into his own net in the 10th minute after Diego Forlan curled a cross into the area.
Atleticowent 2-0 up nine minutes later, Argentine striker Sergio Aguerocracking a low shot in off the far post after a sharp through-ball fromForlan.
But the tie was turned on its head when Atleticomidfielder Cleber Santana sent the ball into his own net after Valenciastriker Villa tried to cut past him on the edge of the area.
Valenciaextended their advantage before the break when forward Juan Manuel Matahammered home inside the near post from the left side of the area.
Atletico piled forward into attack and went 3-2 up on the hour when defender Juan Valera headed in after a corner. But their efforts were to avail as Valencia kept them at bay for the rest of the game.
Ronald Koeman'sside were joined in the semis by last season's losing finalists Getafe,who claimed another away goals victory over 2003 winners Mallorca.
Trailing1-0 after the first leg, the islanders looked to be on course forvictory after an Ariel Ibagaza penalty and a close-range header fromVenezuelan striker Juan Arango put them 2-0 up.
But midfielder Esteban Granerostunned the home crowd when his curling cross bounced between a clutchof players and crept in at the far post nine minutes from time.
Granero was red-carded with a minute left, but the sending off did little to dampen his team's celebrations.
Barcelona host Villarreal at the Camp Nou on Thursday, while Racing Santander travel to Athletic Bilbao. |

Koeman Gagal Total di Valencia?
Ronald Koeman sudah tiga bulan menjalani tugasnya membesut tim Valencia. Tapi prestasi skuad berlogo kelelawar itu belum juga membaik di kompetisi Liga Primera alias La Liga musim ini. Mereka masih tercecer di peringkat sembilan. Bila prestasi terus terpuruk, maka Valencia bukan mustahil bakal mendepak Koeman.
Sudah tiga bulan Ronald Koeman membesut tim Valencia CF. Tapi hingga sejauh ini prestasi tim berlogo kelelawar itu belum juga membaik di kompetisi Liga Primer Spanyol musim 2007/2008.
Sampai pekan ke-22 kompetisi Liga Primera alias La Liga musim ini, Valencia masih tercecer di peringkat 9 klasemen sementara. Mereka baru meraup nilai total 30 dari hasil 9 kali menang, 3 kali imbang dan 10 kali kalah. Dibandingkan Real Madrid yang ada di peringkat puncak klasemen, Valencia tertinggal 23 point.
Ketika Koeman datang awal November silam, kondisi El Che memang sedang kacau. Mereka terpuruk di kompetisi La Liga dan terseok-seok di penyisihan grup Liga Champions Eropa. Semula mantan pelatih Ajax Amsterdam dan PSV Eindhoven (Belanda) ini diharapkan bisa memberi obat mujarab buat memperbaiki kinerja David Albelda dan kawan-kawan. Tapi ternyata, kehadiran Koeman yang mantan bek Barcelona dekade 1990-an itu belum cukup ampuh buat memperbaiki prestasi Valencia. Akibatnya, tim yang bermarkas di Mestalla itu masih terhuyung-huyung di kompetisi musim ini. |
