Barcelona advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday following a 7-1 hammering of Leverkusen at Camp Nou.
Lionel Messi was the history-making hero, becoming the first player to score five times in a single Champions League match.
The Catalan giants entered the night with a 3-1 aggregate advantage from the first leg, and Messi's exploits, plus a double from tournament debutant Cristian Tello meant that Karim Bellarabi's late goal was only a consolation strike as Barca advanced by a 10-2 aggregate margin.
The hosts had control from the early stages of the match, and Messi nearly put his side ahead after 11 minutes after being played into the box by Cesc Fabregas, but Bernd Leno did very well to push the Argentine's shot around the post.
Xavi was next to threaten, with free-kicks on 13 and 24 minutes causing trouble, but the former narrowly missed the target, while the latter was again parried by Leno.
Leverkusen's fortunes eventually turned, and on 25 minutes, Messi latched onto Xavi's chipped ball before lifting his finish beautifully over the goalkeeper and into the net.
Barca pushed on for more, and Messi cut in from the right after a half-hour before having his shot blocked. In the 42nd minute, the scorer tried a similar move, but this time had space to fire an unstoppable finish into the lower-left corner, doubling the hosts' advantage and putting the tie beyond any doubt before half-time.
The hosts nearly got a third before the break, but Leno was quick off his line to deny Fabregas, and moments later, Pedro.
Five minutes after the interval, Messi completed his hat-trick with another phenomenal effort. After receiving Cesc's ball over the top, the 24-year-old created just enough space to shoot, and again chipped his shot, leaving Leno with no chance.
Tello joined the fray as a substitute on 55 minutes, and within seconds found himself at the end of Cesc's flick, striking low into the net.
The 20-year-old made it two for him in the 62nd minute as he received the ball in a similar position, and again beat Leno with a low strike the squirmed under the shot-stopper.
Between Tello's strikes, Messi grabbed a fourth. The Ballon d'Or winner was initially stopped, but after Leno spilled the ball, he tapped home from close range.
Before the final exchanges, Leverkusen's only meaningful attempt came after the tie was already decided, in the 54th minute when Eren Derdiyok beat Javier Mascherano to the byeline before striking inches wide from a tight angle.
After the hour mark, things quieted as Barca rested on their lead, while Leverkusen offered little resistance as the hosts dominated possession. Five minutes from full time, however,Messi scored a brilliant fifth, bending his strike from the edge of the box just inside the left post.
The Argentine's tally was the greatest-ever for a player in a single match in Europe's elite competition, and took his Champions League account for the season to 12 goals in just 7 outings.
Leverkusen would strike at the death as Bellarabi played a one-two with Simon Rolfes before striking a hard finish to the far post, but it was little consolation for Leverkusen, whose defeat equalled the worst-ever result for a team in one leg in the round of 16.
In the end, Leverkusen proved no match for Barcelona, and crashed out of Europe at the hands of an elite side. In progressing, the hosts have reached the quarter-finals for the fifth consecutive season, and now wait patiently for the draw, which takes place on March 16. |

Cervera experiences baptism of fire as the Argentina forward inspires his side to a comfortable win.
Guardiola's men overcame both Racing Santander and the lengthy grass on the pitch at El Sardinero to secure a vital 2-0 win in the two side's La Liga clash this afternoon. A brace of Lionel Messi goals gave Barcelona the win, as Racing struggled to trouble their more illustrious opponents.
Pedro very nearly gave the away side the lead after just 6 minutes when he drifted past a couple of challenges on his way into the Racing area on the left before curling an ambitious effort inches wide with Mario Fernandez seemingly beaten.
Barcelona were awarded a free-kick for a foul on Messi on the edge of the Racing penalty area shortly afterwards, much to the dismay of the home fans. The Argentine's well-struck effort from the set piece was matched by an equally impressive save from Fernandez, as the score remained 0-0.
Andres Iniesta then came within a whisker of opening the scoring midway through the first half when he struck the crossbar with an outrageously ambitious chip from 12 yards out.
As the half wore on Barcelona began to find their rhythm and it took a fine Fernandez save to stop Cesc Fabregas from scoring. A flowing Barcelona move dissected the Racing backline and enabled the Spanish international enough space to get a shot away.
The away side took the lead on 29 minutes after Messi slotted home from close range after Fabregas had swept a cross to him at the back post.
Despite their disciplined approach to this match under new boss Alvaro Cervera Racing came under increasing pressure in the second half, with Barcelona creating a number of chances in the opening minutes after the break.
Barcelona eventually made their pressure count, Messi making it 2-0 on 55 minutes after his side were awarded a penalty when Fabregas was hauled to the ground inside the area by Domingo Cisma. Messi sent Fernandez the wrong way with the penalty to score his second of the game, and 50th goal in all competitions this season.
Just minutes after Messi's penalty Isaac Cuenca bamboozled his way through the Racing defence, striking his effort against the post as Barcelona went in search of more goals.
Racing thought they had reduced the deficit with their first effort on goal on 69 minutes when the substitute Adrian Gonzalez controlled the ball before firing into the net following a corner, only for the linesman to correctly rule his effort out for offside.
A late chance for Racing fell to Marcos Gullon, but the midfielder's shot was easily turned away by Victor Valdes, as Barcelona comfortably held out for the win.
The win takes Barcelona three points closer to Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, but the Catalan side are still 10 adrift of their rivals with just 12 games left to play. Racing meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone following this home defeat, with six points separating them and bottom-placed Zaragoza. |

MADRID: Lionel Messi menyumbatkan hatrik untuk muncul penjaring terbanyak sepanjang zaman dengan 234 gol ketika membantu Barcelona menundukkan Granada 5-3 dan memberikan juara itu lima mata mengatasi Real Madrid di takhta La Liga.
