Valencia hung on for a point in a goalless draw against Getafe despite having David Villa sent off for a late lunge on Ruben De La Red midway through the second half.
It was a game to forget at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, and a far cry from the days when the two managers - Ronald Koeman and Michael Laudrup - appeared in the same Barcelona side.
Chances were few and far between, although substitute Juan Albin came close to nicking all three points in stoppage time, only to be foiled by Valencia goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand. |

Spain midfielder David Albelda'sproposed transfer to Villarreal is on hold after Valencia refused toagree an out-of-court settlement for his sacking from the club.
Los Submarinos Amarillos president Fernando Roig insisted that the deal was off - for now.
"Atthis moment in time there is no chance of Albelda being a Villarrealplayer," Roig declared. "There are many reasons for this but, aboveall, he is still a Valencia player and, logically, if he is at anotherteam, and he has a current contract with that club, there are nooptions. This is something we have already repeated.
"We, as a club, are very respectful of all players who have current contracts and with the clubs who hold their registrations."
Thecomments imply that Villarreal are taking the player's view on thematter, the view that - until a formal settlement is reached - Albeldais a Valencia player, as Los Che believe him to be a free agent.
The 30-year-old was - along with veteran goalkeeper Santiago Canizares and winger Miguel Angel Angulo - blamed by new coach Ronald Koemanfor the club's problems, with all three internationals unceremoniouslydumped from the squad and told that they would never play for themagain.
The then-Valencia captain, who spent his entire careerat the club apart from a loan spell with nearby Villarreal, was free tofind a new club but as a matter of principle demanded an explanationfor the sacking and settlement of his contract, accusing the club oftrying to exploit the upcoming European Championships, predicting hewould immediately join a new team to ensure selection for Spain.
Valenciawere fourth-placed at the time of the panic-sacking of Quique SanchezFlores following three defeats in four October matches, but sinceKoeman took over have slipped to mid-table with only three wins in 14Liga matches.
Albelda has also been linked with a move toPremier League club and Carling Cup champions Tottenham, where he wouldlink up with manager and compatriot Juande Ramos.

Valencia coach Ronald Koeman has shrugged off reports that he will be sacked if president Juan Soler decides to leave the club.
The Dutchman said: "I have come to lead a team with the chance of being in the final (of the Copa del Rey). I cannot nor do I want to think about this subject. As much as the players, I have been preparing for this game (against Barcelona).
"And if there is something more, someone will tell me. If they want me, I am here, and if not, I leave. There is no problem. It is not possible to do anything else than listen." |

The visitors looked to have completed a classic smash-and-grab raid at the Nou Camp when David Villa finished off a counter-attack in 70th minute after the home side had dominated the game.
Valencia goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand was in inspired form as Barca put on a late surge, but in time added on midfielder Xavi finally found the back of the net to leave the tie evenly-balanced for the return leg on March 20.
Last year's finalists Getafe host Racing Santander in the second semi-final on Thursday.
A breathless opening saw 24-times winners Barca have three shots blocked in succession while Valencia had a goal disallowed inside the first 10 minutes.
But it quickly settled into a game of cat and mouse as the visitors defended deep in their own half and the home side controlled possession.
Barca had few sights of goal until after the break when Hildebrand took centre-stage, twice denying Argentina forward Lionel Messi before Valencia struck.
Ronald Koeman's side broke forward with pace and Angel Arizmendi crossed low to the near post for Spain striker Villa to finish past Victor Valdes.
That sparked an all-out assault on Valencia's area but, as the minutes ticked by, Hildebrand and his defenders looked to have weathered the storm.
In the fourth minute of time added on, Samuel Eto'o surged into the area, controlling the ball with his hand at one point, and fired goalwards.
Again Hildebrand saved, but Xavi caught the rebound and blasted through a crowded area into the far bottom corner to extend Barca's unbeaten run in all competitions to 15 games. |
